What they do not want
Too senior
This is a major red flag.
They do not want:

  • 15–20 year veteran
  • people who have “done everything already”
  • people who feel too established / too corporate
  • someone who may be less hungry for a builder seat
G specifically said profiles like “I built xxx rm” are probably not the right fit.

I accidentally received this email along with my rejection today. The notes from the hiring manager.

I think you dodged a bullet. I think that they want someone that is new and inexperienced and cheap and does what they are told and doesn't have their own opinions on any of it

Presumably that was exactly what was on the accidental email - 'G' and their advice would be obvious to the HR panel because this, in writing, was supposed not to have gone outside the company.

So, if you are actively looking for less professional and less corporate/ careful people, this is the kind of thing that will happen. Hopefully the seniors are quite forgiving of mistakes of this sort in their interview processes, or aren't especially wound up by them.

'dont think you meant to send this to me! Looks like this time the role isn't aligned with my experience. If you do find you need someone with xxx and yy in the future, I'd be happy to step in and drive this forward as this is what I do, I'm good at it and I enjoy it'.

I don’t think so necessarily. My employer hires on a graduate scheme, and also on a retraining scheme. Both require you to have no experience in our industry, but have attracted candidates who are in their 30/40/50s because they’ve retrained and done a degree later in life, or have worked in [retail/public sector/other irrelevant field] and want to retrain into our profession.

The experience is not an age barrier, it truly is an experience barrier. We have other roles that may or may not be open at any given time for people who have relevant experience.

That's different, the scheme you discuss will clearly state that at the outset.

This job was advertised to all, but the secret selection criteria was 'we don't want someone old'.

It's pretty obvious. The notes are how to exclude older candidates without explicitly saying 'we want someone younger'.

Because it's a fairly serious breach, and could easily have contained actionable material that the OP, had she been so minded, could have acted on. By making it clear that she's seen it and noted it, she's making herself look professional.

Yes, it's age discrimination. You could probably take them to tribunal if you have the chops for it. The sad fact is that if you did that you would probably never get a job in that industry again. But you do have a case

I think it’s less about experience, but more about attitude. In a builder environment, the ‘know it all attitude’ kills collaboration. I think the interviewer was pretty astute.
