AIBU to see this accidental rejection email as a red flag?

ElizabethReed · 01/04/2026 11:32

What they do not want
Too senior
This is a major red flag.
They do not want:

  • 15–20 year veteran
  • people who have “done everything already”
  • people who feel too established / too corporate
  • someone who may be less hungry for a builder seat
G specifically said profiles like “I built xxx rm” are probably not the right fit.

I accidentally received this email along with my rejection today. The notes from the hiring manager.

I don't understand how people are making the assumption that the thread title was AI generated - what's the giveaway?

Also, sorry OP but I don't understand your post.

OP saying it was.

Enrichetta · 01/04/2026 19:27

I’m late to the thread and only read the first page, but I struggle to understand why so many posters have difficulty comprehending the OP.

@ElizabethReed - I think age discrimination is rampant these days. Older, experienced employees are more expensive, and many managers don’t want to manage people who they suspect know more than them.

Good luck with your job search!

Telling her she shouldn't be hired because she's not coherent enough on MN. So what? She's just been rejected for a job and writing might not be her forte. And before you say anything, the job could be something unrelated to writing!

lol. Read the thread. Almost all comments are pretty much in agreement with what I’ve said. Maybe we are all nasty? 😂 🙄
The job market is very competitive at the moment. Employers can take their pick.

Yep, you are all nasty. Some are nastier than others. If the conversation was face to face, in what circumstances would it be acceptable to say to a person whom you didn't know that it was no wonder that they didn't get a job? Some have been positively gleeful about it. It's disgusting. Did you understand this post or is it also too difficult for you?

They still have to obey the law though however picky they think they can be at the moment.
And actually, no most people don’t agree with you.
You were rude. Which makes me doubt that you’ve ever been in any position of authority in any “career” you’ll no doubt claim to be employed within.

No, I’ve been performing my actual job that I’m employed within. Not all of us are unemployed that are applying for roles

Huh? I asked if you’d been job hunting because presumably you are looking for another job.

and you’ve been mumsnetting mainly rather than “performing” in your job

Heavens above this company dodged a bullet

Plmnki · 01/04/2026 20:50

Your OP made no sense. You then said you let AI write your summary. You’re arsy towards anyone who asks for further info. No idea how much the interviewing company messed up, but it looks like they made the right call.

odd you see op’s Response to even my question if she’d been job hunting?! Jumped down my throat! Scary stuff

Wow, you know what they say about presuming and assumptions?
I’ve made a handful of posts my breaks
Why don’t you try being so presumptuous and rude to somebody’s face tomorrow and see how well that serves you?

The point which you are spectacularly missing is this affects older people more than younger and is therefore the very definition of indirect discrimination.

but you’re allowed to hire juniors. You’re allowed to specify 5-10 years experience or several years (meaning 2-3). That isn’t by itself age discrimination.

Honestly, what are you looking for! PP is correct, the OP was not coherent and quite honestly rude on here! That attitude won’t get her a job whatever her age!

What on earth are you on about?

I asked whether you’d been job hunting.

ChoosingMyOwnRandomUsername · 01/04/2026 20:56

Your initial post is nonsense op.

There are numerous ways you could have separated the content of an email from your own comments. Bold. Italics. Decent spacing. You used none of those and it's unclear what the actual email content was vs what you've written.

Fable2024 · 01/04/2026 20:57

Either way… the op didn’t get the job and the company won’t give her another thought. The end!

There’s no need for you to reply. It won’t be read.

You are allowed to hire juniors, but you are not allowed to specify 5-10 years experience. The courts have ruled that specifying 5-10 years experience is unlawful indirect age discrimination as it excludes younger candidates who could not have that level of experience. A recruiter should focus on the specific skills and competencies they expect the candidate to have, not how long they have been doing the job.

Fable2024 · 01/04/2026 21:01

Fact is.. op failed to get the job. That’s the long and short of it. Good luck with your job hunt @ElizabethReed

Blimey! The feedback for the rejection could’ve been much worse, I reckon!

prh47bridge · 01/04/2026 21:04

And I'm amazed by the number of people who are confused by OP's first post. It isn't difficult. The post was NOT generated by AI - she simply accepted Mumsnet's suggestion for the thread title. The post starts with the email she received. Everything up to "I accidentally received this email" is the contents of that email. The final paragraph tells us that she received this email and that it is the notes from the hiring manager.

prh47bridge · 01/04/2026 21:05

Fable2024 · 01/04/2026 20:57

OP didn't get the job but, if she takes them to tribunal, the company will have to give her another thought and will probably have to pay her a significant amount of money for indirect age discrimination.

Fixed it for you.
