If you, as a manager, heard this at work...?

Would you tell the other manager.

The team who sit next to me in the office (small wall partition), their manager is off this week and one of their team came in this morning and joked with 2 of the other members about their manager being off.

She said "we can relax now ahhhh "name" is off all week"

This person has said something before which I did tell the manager about. I feel irritated that she openly complains about her manager.

WIBU to tell the manager when they return next Monday?

I wouldn’t do anything.
I manage a large team, and my own manager is off. I said when I came in “let’s log off, head out for cocktails is it” and then we had a laugh and then got on with our work. Only now am I having a breather! It doesn’t mean anything

Snitchy McSnitchface. What a non-issue. Jeeze.

bumblingbovine49 · 10/02/2025 14:36

If you reported to me that a member of my team said this about me while I was on leave, I'd be polite and thank you for letting me know, but I'd internally roll my eyes.

I would, as usual follow up with the team on the progress they had made on work projects while I was on leave, in the same way I always would and would judge for myself productivity while I was away.

People are allowed to joke!!

BobbyBiscuits · 10/02/2025 14:40

No way should you complain. Is she saying what everyone else is thinking? When the boss is off many people sigh with relief. They can get their work done without the anxiety of a higher manager scrutinising you face to face.
For me that's not anything other than being normal to feel like that.
You sound like you dislike this person and wish to get them in trouble.
As what could be the punishment for saying that? A normal manager wouldn't even address it. It's not like they're just going to the pub and slacking off their work.

republicofjam · 10/02/2025 14:42

Massively unreasonable. Concentrate on your own work and how you are coming across to your colleagues. I suspect it is not well.

CrunchySnow · 10/02/2025 14:45

Oh jeez, don't be 'that' person. My boss works a 4 day week, we all bloody love the day she is off...not because we don't like her as a person, its just less chaotic when she is off. We say things like that all the time.

whatawonderfultime · 10/02/2025 14:47

No because I'm not that petty. If I heard my own staff say that about me I wouldn't be bothered.

TorroFerney · 10/02/2025 14:47

JudgeBread · 10/02/2025 13:56

Lmao no. I've been a manager and if that's the worst thing my staff were saying behind my back I'd be happy. And if you came running to me to tell on them when I got back from my hols I'd think you were a bit of a nob.

People need to vent, if you're in management that venting will often be about you (even if you're a good manager, sometimes you just become the face of all the things wrong with whatever company you're with). It's just part of it, as long as they weren't saying something really egregious I'd just leave them to it.

Edited

Agree. It would also op get back to the team that you’d said it which wouldn’t be helpful.

as always op I’d be doing some self reflection, why is this provoking you? Are you a very hard working rule follower that feels undervalued?

you do know that with the cost of living must people who are sacked loose their homes as well?

are you dating the other manager ? What do you owe them ?
would it get you a promotion to grass?

VelvetDuvet · 10/02/2025 14:49

For some reason this has reminded of when DS1 was 6yo and informed the teacher that DS2 had ventured into the wrong area of the playground and needed to go back to the zone for reception children! 😀 Dobbing in his brother on his first day at school.

SecondMrsTanqueray · 10/02/2025 14:50

No, of course I wouldn’t. Snitchy and childish of you to consider it.

Good grief, were you always this chippy, or has adulting just sucked the joy clean out of you?!

Sebsaloysius · 10/02/2025 14:52

>>>>> Seb goes off to hide and avoid the bricks heading her way for quoting the OP in her post. Sorrrrrry!

Tricho · 10/02/2025 14:52

omg no, some of my fellow managers are absolute terrors to their team so odds on id probably silently sympathise, but even if not its none of my business!

Butchyrestingface · 10/02/2025 14:53

To paraphrase Sister Michael in Derry Girls, "you may go far in life, @Chaicoff , but you will not be well-liked." 🙄

Minuethippo · 10/02/2025 14:53

Are you on the spectrum OP? Maybe you take everything literally?

Gcsunnyside23 · 10/02/2025 14:54

Jeez op, relax

CremeEggThief · 10/02/2025 14:54

Good grief! I hope I don't know or work with you in RL, OP.
I don't like grasses! 😬

Oioisavaloy27 · 10/02/2025 14:55

It's a normal jokey comment while the cats away the mice will play and all that! Why are you so keen to stick the boot in?

HotCrossBunplease · 10/02/2025 14:55

Have you never heard the phrase “While the cat’s away, the mice will play”?

Unless you work in a safety critical industry where you fear that these people will cause harm to others by not following management guidelines, I’d suggest that you chill out.

Pancakeflipper · 10/02/2025 14:56

I wouldn't be saying anything.

In my previous role I used to actively look at when my direct boss was on leave on their calendar, or away on meetings.

As much as I loved working for them and my job, they were intense, worked at rapid rate, and could be intimidating unless you knew how to deal.with them.

Being out of the office was a break for me too - I'd get tasks completed that were never possible when they were there.

LookItsMeAgain · 10/02/2025 14:56

YWBU to tell the other manager this.

This is purely office banter. It wasn't an open complaint.

What would be a complaint is you overhearing conversation that was being said in one team reporting said throwaway comments to management (even to their manager) as it wasn't for your ears.

They could be under a lot of pressure while this person is around, micro-managing them perhaps, and having that pressure removed makes things easier to get done.

The employees will be getting through whatever their workload is and won't be on the mitch from work.

Also, it's not your team so leave them alone!

Sherararara · 10/02/2025 14:58

That it? Total none story.

Flipslop · 10/02/2025 14:58

HelloMyNameIsElderSmurf · 10/02/2025 13:49

If you reported that back to me as a manager I'd ignore you and mentally characterise you as a clipe who needs to keep her eyes on her own work.

Total nonsense, a jokey comment and none of your business.

Totally agree, this wouldn’t look good on you OP
