If you, as a manager, heard this at work...?

Would you tell the other manager.

The team who sit next to me in the office (small wall partition), their manager is off this week and one of their team came in this morning and joked with 2 of the other members about their manager being off.

She said "we can relax now ahhhh "name" is off all week"

This person has said something before which I did tell the manager about. I feel irritated that she openly complains about her manager.

WIBU to tell the manager when they return next Monday?

If she’d come in saying “oh thank F that (insert insult) isn’t here” you’d have to say something. But we all make jokes about leaving early or whatever when the boss isn’t there. I don’t think she’s said anything offensive. I don’t think it’s any worse than “Thank god it’s Friday”. We all know that means “thank goodness this week is finally over and I can get out of this place!” But that’s perfectly acceptable to say.

Edited

Do you know something? Even if they did say "Thank fuck that X isn't in the office today" - it's still office banter and none of the OP's business.

SaltyPig · 10/02/2025 14:59

I bet you're popular...

Glittertwins · 10/02/2025 14:59

Wow, my manager hasn't been even in the same country as me for years, we always say this sort of thing / they couldn't care less!

ColinOfficeTrolley · 10/02/2025 15:00

Fucking hell. You little grass lol.

fruitbrewhaha · 10/02/2025 15:02

Eh? I can’t reason why you feel this needs addressing. Have the team worked as usual or are they playing tennis with folders and scrunched up paper? Surely they are just cracking on as usual with that feeling of being monitored.

BashfulClam · 10/02/2025 15:03

Why would you bother? It’s normal workplace banter. Aldo the conversation wasn’t for you! Maybe Leto your focus on your own work rather than listening to others and getting all excited as you scuttle off to grass people up for having a bit of lighthearted humour!

I bet you aren’t well liked and maybe this kind of stuff is why.

IlooklikeNigella · 10/02/2025 15:05

I'd say you're great fun at parties OP.

Pipsquiggle · 10/02/2025 13:51

No. Do not report it.

FYI - if you did report this, it would make you look worse not the person who said it

This.

Applesonthelawn · 10/02/2025 15:07

That's nothing more than a bonding technique between colleagues. You shouldn't even be considering saying anything. Don't they always work the same irrespective of whether they are being watched?

Hwi · 10/02/2025 15:09

If we lived in a normal, hierarchical, respectful country of some 40 or 50 years ago, I would say - definitely complain to the manager. But unfortunately we live where we live - no hierarchy, no respect, no dignity, so I would say - let it go, don't report, you will be thought the odd one out, unfortunately, times have changed and work ethic have changed beyond repair.

HobnobsChoice · 10/02/2025 15:10

I'm a manager at work and I'm certain my team have said similar about me. When my manager, the department head, is on leave I often joke about all there being no grown ups around (I'm mid 40s). If someone told me such a petty thing I couldn't even bring myself to care

Karmakamelion · 10/02/2025 15:10

@Chaicoff are you sure you are a manager? Because I highly doubt you have any kind of skills that are needed to be. I've never heard of such a petty reaction from a supposed grown up! Did you used to tell tales to teachers too??

GutsyShark · 10/02/2025 15:11

If you want to be known as the office busybody go for it, but I think it’s a normal jokey comment and no need personally.

Lavenderblossoms · 10/02/2025 15:12

Oh come on, most people make comments when manager not in. Like cats away, mice can play.

Seriously get a life. People need somewhere to let off about their job. You aren't even their manager!

Huckyfell · 10/02/2025 15:13

Why would you tell the manager? Yes I am a manager and if someone told me that "Betty was talking to Jean about you and saying ahhh Karen is off this week" My opinion of you would not be positive.

I2amonlyhereforTheBeer · 10/02/2025 15:13

No I wouldn't tell. If it was a situation where your laid-back colleague had put her feet up while the boss was away, but it meant I was having to take on her workload as well as my own, I would say something.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 10/02/2025 15:14

Bloody hell, it's so standard a joke to make I can guarantee this person wasn't the only one that said it this morning.

You'd make a complete fool of yourself if you tried to use it to get them in trouble.

Iloveeverycat · 10/02/2025 15:15

Non issue. We say that but still work the same.

Are you always so serious?

You’d be reporting what sounds like a joke.
My line Manager jokes that “we can chill out and skive” when the Managing Director isn’t it.
The Managing Director is her husband… they both own the business.
It’s just a lighthearted joke I imagine.

And inferior women would be in the kitchen where they belong.

You hoping trump and musk come along and save us from these ridiculous notions of equality?

GiddyRobin · 10/02/2025 15:19

I'm a manager. If you reported this to me, I'd think you were a massive jobsworth and immediately put you in my mental "not a team player" box.

DisforDarkChocolate · 10/02/2025 15:22

Have you forgotten what's it's like not to be the boss?

Perfectly normal thing to say. Their boss would think you were nuts passing that comment on.

LazyArsedMagician · 10/02/2025 15:25

Wowee. If you're not generally disliked before you will be after telling tales.

What a spiteful, nasty thing to think of doing. Normal, jokey comment that most people wouldn't even think twice about.

NiftyKoala · 10/02/2025 15:26

I think the only thing I can say is mind your business. It was a joke. The only one who will come off badly if you tell is you.
