If you, as a manager, heard this at work...?

Would you tell the other manager.

The team who sit next to me in the office (small wall partition), their manager is off this week and one of their team came in this morning and joked with 2 of the other members about their manager being off.

She said "we can relax now ahhhh "name" is off all week"

This person has said something before which I did tell the manager about. I feel irritated that she openly complains about her manager.

WIBU to tell the manager when they return next Monday?

I was in a bad mood yesterday.., a very bad mood. I'm due on and I'm having a hard time with ex DH at the mo.

Hear me out... this member of staff is 23, she has a habit of moaning about everything.
When I told her manager before it was because she was saying her manager was a bitch and needs to retire. She got in trouble for that and apologised. Her manager is my age and good at her job, she knows a lot and she's worked hard to get where she is. I feel this member of staff has no respect for her, or me for that matter.

Yesterday when she was saying they could all relax, it pissed me off!!

This makes it sound like more of a you problem than your original post BUT why don’t you talk to her? BUT BUT BUT before you do, get advice - don’t know how big your company is but if you’re speaking her to her as a manager you might want some input beforehand.

or just forget about it. It really isn’t a big deal OP. Find some ways to destress this isn’t worth it.

Sortalike · 11/02/2025 19:35

Oops... I had better email my manager and apologise for saying "Thank God! I might actually get a bit of peace and quiet then" when he told me he was taking next week off.

Although I don't like the phrase "workplace banter" it sounds like that and nothing out of the ordinary xxx

Eyerollexpert · 11/02/2025 19:41

I have actually said to manager when her and the supervisor both going to be off, "while the cats are away the mice will play." In a jokey way. Really too much of a jobsworth, also I have been a manager and would laugh you out of the building.

sandrapinchedmysandwich · 11/02/2025 19:48

Seriously? Unclench a bit love because this is ridiculous

Nanny0gg · 11/02/2025 20:14

Have you always been a tell-tale?

What on earth are you thinking?

Sorry what? You told on her before?

You seriously need to mind your own business!! I bet you're popular at work! Have you always been such a tell tale?!

We have a saying when our manager is on annual leave 'When the cat's away, the mice will play!' - it's a joke!! A light hearted bit of fun!

You look much worse for telling tales.

Sort your bloody PMT out and stop inflicting it on the rest of the workforce. Stop bringing your problems into work.

You are the problem here.

Imagine having you as a colleague. Nightmare!

restingbitchface30 · 11/02/2025 20:43

It’s a joke. I used to manage a small team of people and if this got back to me I’d laugh. You seem a bit odd to want to run to the manager over this

menopausalfart · 11/02/2025 21:25

You may not like her but it's none of your business what you've overheard.

They were joking! You even said they were joking. What is your problem? Stop trying to cause trouble and worry about your own work! . I bet you are great to be around! 🙄

TwinklySquid · 11/02/2025 21:30

What do you hope to gain by saying something? Brownie points? A promotion?

It doesn’t directly affect you so don’t say anything.

DarkForces · 11/02/2025 21:34

Your pmt is not her fault
Your ex issue is not her fault
The fact you see her as above her station because she's young is not her fault
Be careful of telling tales. Bullying a colleague is far more serious than joking about chilling while the manager is off. Just stop or suddenly you'll be in the shit and it won't be her fault either. It'll be yours.

So you want to say something to get them in trouble because you feel shitty? Oh well in that case….🙄🙄
seriously though you need to sort yourself out. Just because you are pissed off doesn’t make it ok to try and get someone else into trouble. You are not someone I would want to work with and I bet you are very unpopular!

sofaprincess · 11/02/2025 21:45

OP if you were that bothered by the comment, then as a manager you should have pulled them up on it there and then. Which is exactly what your colleague should say to you if you report it to them. That said, I agree that it was likely said in jest and it personally wouldn’t bother me!

Findmethesmallestviolin · 11/02/2025 22:34

I’m assuming that you are either very new to management or a team leader in reality. You need a much thicker skin.

As for being “due on” - ffs grow up and learn to handle your own emotions without impacting work.

TheseCalmSeas · 11/02/2025 23:18

Let them moan.

I’m a manger and wouldn’t care less if this was happening

What’s wrong with you ? Are you sure that what the women said, is really what irritates you or is it that you don’t like the women ? I ask because this is the second time you have felt the need to tell on her.

Minuethippo · 12/02/2025 06:25

OP you need to speak to your GP and inform them your period is making you irrational. They’ll recommend medication. It’ll make you more normal

Wimpod · 12/02/2025 11:47

HelloMyNameIsElderSmurf · 10/02/2025 13:49

If you reported that back to me as a manager I'd ignore you and mentally characterise you as a clipe who needs to keep her eyes on her own work.

Total nonsense, a jokey comment and none of your business.

Clipe is just the best descriptive word for people who like to go to the boss with total nonsense to try and make everyone look good.
(I'm not talking about whistle blowing dangerous or unethical stuff, just whining about non-issues or small things that you should address with the person directly, before even thinking about going to a manager.)

We say this all the time at my work. All it means is that our manager won't be in every half an hour with her stupid questions and we can get the feck on with our jobs that day/week. 🥳 We probably get more done tbh...

We used to breathe a sigh of relief when a crappy manager wasn't coming in.
We were actually more productive.
And that's in a few jobs I've had over the years. I honestly wouldn't get involved, or you will become like her and make your team miserable.

None of that is relevant.

You are not this particular employee's manager or team leader. You're just not.
This particular employee has issues with their manager and finds that they are treating them unfairly (at least in their eyes) so they were letting off some steam to another colleague (probably a team mate) saying that their manager was a bitch and should retire. Both are subjective comments.
You believe that the manager is good at her job, yet this employee clearly has issues with this manager.
You believe that this employee has no respect for her or you - well, I have to say that respect is earned not allocated by levels of years of service.

They could probably all relax because their manager wasn't in, was probably accurate and again it was ZERO to do with you or your management style or who you have reporting to you. You even say that it 'pissed you off' and you posted here asking if you should report this employee - would you not think that the employee here deserves the same level of caution here when her manager was out - she was letting off steam. You were letting off steam. The only difference is that she did it to her colleagues (apparently with other people overhearing her) and you did it to the internet.

Goodtogossip · 12/02/2025 15:57

Wow! How old are you? wanting to go tell tales to the Manager on a young girl that's jokingly passed a daft comment to her Colleagues. The fact you've already told tales before & got her in to trouble seems like you have it in for this girl. Be very careful as if she's knows it's you snitching on her you could be accused of bullying. It's really non of your business so if I were you I'd stay out of it.

Deeperthantheocean · 12/02/2025 18:01

It's completely natural and human to make these jokes, absolutely don't report it. That would make you look very petty and mean.
