Come and hang out with us here in that horrible space between endless applications, waiting and interviews.

Why do some employers make applications so convoluted? A CV and covering letter should be fine. Doing one where you have to upload your jobs and roles in separate blocks, and outline with examples how you meet each of the 20 points of the person specification, as well as supporting statement.
All this time wasting for a job I am spectacularly unlikely to get, on a bog standard wage.

DrRichardWebber · 29/10/2024 20:32

It’s a crazy job market at the moment. Lots of candidates for not many roles. Hopefully it should improve post budget/new year.

Gcn · 29/10/2024 20:41

I've got an interview tomorrow. Internal promotion, which I'm much more desperate to get than I've let on. Only a few folk know I've gone for it, but I've no idea how I'll handle it if someone else gets it..... When it was first advertised I had lots of folk saying that they assumed it was going to be my job, but I've lost confidence over the past 6 months. Shitting myself to be honest.

LeafyGreenSalad · 29/10/2024 20:46

You know the company and the job. They know you. You're 9/10 of the way there. All they want to know is how you'd go about the job and what can you bring to it that benefits them.

CliveNextDoor · 30/10/2024 11:51

Ooh the job I really liked the look of that was on Indeed, but I never heard anything from, has just emailed me with an interview for Monday! I'd forgotten about it since I didn't hear anything but I'm glad now. It's part time which I'd like but they haven't said what hours, so we'll see.

fingers crossed for me and everyone else interviewing!

Good luck today @Gcn I've been in this position and it's really nerve wracking! Let us know how you get on.

Good luck to those with interviews 🙂

I still haven't seen any jobs to apply for 🤦‍♀️ Will have to keep looking I guess 🙃

ETgo · 30/10/2024 12:28

Joining this - I'm just looking for a job I can leave at work at the end of the day now rather than worrying about meeting targets and using scripted phrases etc.

Couple of interviews this week I'm hoping to hear from by the end of the week - temp Xmas jobs in retail (M&S) that have the potential to lead to permanent positions in the new year.

Good luck to everyone, especially those who currently aren't employed after redundancy - I'm very grateful I have a job at the moment even if I don't enjoy it.

CliveNextDoor · 30/10/2024 13:03

I've just done a webinar for a job for the civil service and I'm really interested in it. However, the timeline doesn't work with the job I have the interview for on Monday, which starts asap, but I wouldn't get the results of the civil service one til 9th Dec, and it wouldn't start til Jan.

I want the civil service one more. BUT, the Monday one is much more of a social one and far less stress, a leave it at work job, and therefore considerably less money. I'm lucky that money isn't my main goal at the moment, a better work life balance and mental health is, but argh. I am definitely going to put the cs job application in today anyway and see if I get an interview, but they're not til the end of Nov.

JOB HUNTING IS SO STRESSFUL.

OP posts:
Soccermumamir · 30/10/2024 14:46

Same here. I want a job I can go to, come home and forget about it. I've climbed the ladder to as far as I want to go. I have no desire to move up, but to move out. I'm hoping more jobs become available over the next few weeks 🤞

Gcn · 30/10/2024 15:01

Interview done. Now for the horrible waiting bit.....

LeafyGreenSalad · 30/10/2024 16:03

Well done Gcn how do you feel it went?

Interview done. Now for the horrible waiting bit.....

Good luck. How did it go?

Soccermumamir · 30/10/2024 16:21

Finally a job has popped up that I can apply for. So will do that tonight 🙂 Feel a bit more hopeful now lol 😆

Gcn · 30/10/2024 16:31

Honestly? No idea. Doing the usual of thinking of all the things I should have said. What will be will be

CliveNextDoor · 30/10/2024 16:54

@Gcn I'm rooting for you.

@Soccermumamir good, get that application in!

OP posts:
fiddleleaffig · 30/10/2024 20:01

Ooo well done @Gcn, I hope the interview was a success

@CliveNextDoor sorry to hear the other job didn't work out but that's great you've got another interview. Hopefully this one is a better fit.

I'm in the same boat as others - I just want a zero stress. Low responsibility job where I can go in, do the work, socialise with my colleagues, and then go home and not have to worry about a thing. And have time for hobbies! I don't have that at the moment and I am really missing the gym. I have zero desire for a big fancy career, just wanna earn enough to travel and enjoy life.
I'm in the awkward stage of waiting for interview dates. I hate this limbo phase of just waiting to hear

cushionfiend · 31/10/2024 08:04

Hello - I've been lurking on this thread as I'm not actively job hunting yet but it's looking quite likely that I may get made redundant next year, so I've been looking at lots of jobs and wondering how job hunting is going generally. Really interesting to hear people's experiences on here. Can I share the thing that I'm noticing when looking at job ads and responsibilities? You find a job that seems compatible from the ad. My current salary is £34k so I'm not looking at big senior roles or anything. Then you look at the detailed job description - and the list of responsibilities goes on. And on. And on. Is it me or is it just unrealistic, particularly on a mid-level salary? Are employers consolidating multiple roles into one job now, and expecting people to fit it into a normal working day? It's quite dispiriting.

CliveNextDoor · 31/10/2024 09:51

No, not just you @cushionfiend. I read a job advert yesterday where the role was so detailed... and it was minimum wage AND required 2 years experience!

OP posts:
Richardchamberlainrocks · 31/10/2024 10:06

I am so down and I feel trapped. I work in two minimum wage jobs and both jobs are hard physical work and I am exhausted. I have tried applying for anything within my capabilities and absolutely ZERO response from anyone. The jobs I’m going for are not even offering better pay. I just want out of my current jobs. God I feel so fed up. Well done to those who are getting interviews. All the best. X

LeafyGreenSalad · 31/10/2024 10:26

Big hugs @Richardchamberlainrocks that really sucks. That's the problem with the jobs market being over saturated with applicants. People get defined by their CV and their last few jobs. You might have the soul of a poet or the sharpness to analyse any problem and devise brilliant strategies, but if your last job is working in a shop, your next job is likely to be working in a shop.
It's horribly unfair, and HR departments seem remarkably short-sighted in only giving interviews to people who have done the exact job elsewhere, regardless of aptitude.
I hope you find a way out. Can you volunteer just for a few hours or do a free online course? I appreciate that's difficult when you've no time and are knackered.

Celticrosewave · 31/10/2024 10:27

Please may I join? Redundancies at work and a general nasty vibe means I’m job hunting. I’m in Cornwall and the job market is flat. It’s really worrying!

Spoke to someone at the job centre who said “oh I can see there’s a few thousand jobs available online at the moment”…. Yes but most of those are doctors and teaching posts.

I have applied for about 12 roles that I genuinely believe I’d be good at via Indeed and haven’t heard back from anyone!

One job application was “viewed” 7 times by the job poster on Indeed, heard nothing, job ad was deleted and today received the “You were not successful” notification.

LinkedIn jobs all have hundreds of applicants so that’s not ideal either.

I'm feeling very deflated!

BrendaAndBill · 31/10/2024 10:31

I’d like to join too please. Been looking for 12 months. I’m in a senior role in a toxic workplace. I’ve had a couple of interviews, got down to the last two on one. Just heard that I haven’t made the shortlist for the job I really wanted (was long listed). In the last 12 from 140.

LeafyGreenSalad · 31/10/2024 11:56

Has anybody else got 'the panic'? I'm looking at all kinds of weird and wonderful jobs. Most of them not me at all but I could do at a push, maybe I could do them if I take x training course, go look into random free courses, oh they're not really free. Look at places if I need to relocate.

Gcn · 31/10/2024 12:04

Didn't get it. But big girl pants on and refocus on making my current job more what I want it to be. Shit happens.
