Come and hang out with us here in that horrible space between endless applications, waiting and interviews.

I’ve just written out my resignation letter to send tomorrow. I don’t have another job lined up yet but have an interview on Thursday and have applied for 6 more.

Could do with a few weeks to decompress but funds will start been tight quickly with Christmas round the corner.

Timetolookforanewjob · 21/10/2024 23:00

Good luck @GingerFoxInAT0phat 🍀

fiddleleaffig · 22/10/2024 09:11

Good luck with the interview @GingerFoxInAT0phat

I've applied for 3 jobs this weekend. Two I've passed all the online tests (still waiting to hear about the third) and am through to the next round - ones an interview, and the other is an assessment centre day (mass hiring campaign), just waiting to hear back with dates.

Wanting to completely change careers means it's actually quite exciting seeing all the possibilities available to me. I had a brief spell a few years back where I couldn't work whilst waiting for a dbs to be processed and survived the period by delivering for Amazon. Not glamourous by any means but it was money coming in and my account is still active so worst case I have that as a back up, along with agency/supply work.

CliveNextDoor · 22/10/2024 10:21

Good luck @fiddleleaffig all the rounds sounds very stressful.

Blimey- just had a call from one of the jobs I applied for on Sunday- she's asked me to come in for an interview tomorrow at 9:30! The job doesn't close for another few weeks so I wasn't expecting it at all, she said on the phone if all goes well she'll just withdraw the advert.

ARGHHHHH I haven't had an in-person interview for 7 or 8 years.

At least I don't have to feel sick with nerves for too long since it's in less than 24 hours!

That sounds promising, good luck! What’s the role?

Im currently on shift (48 hours 😭) And debating when to send my resignation email off.

ScottBakula · 22/10/2024 11:42

@CliveNextDoor ooh that's quick !
You have just about got time to run a iron over your shirt and polish you shoes .
Good luck .

Not sure now about employer views on Indeed.

Applied to a nice 4 day week office job in a small company today at lunch-time and literally I swear in a minute of applying it turned to application viewed (green status bar as opposed to remaining blue) and I got what seemed a generic message of tell us about any transferable skills/or if you would like to share further history from the employer. Not had this happen before! Just can’t imagine an employer sitting on Indeed like that. Got to be pre-opted surely.

Oh, that's not good.

fiddleleaffig · 18/10/2024 17:17

Sliding in....
Handed in my resignation today so guess I better find something else. I don't even know what I want do anymore (teacher but no longer want to teach)

Aww well done. Must have been a relief. I'm not a teacher but work in education, and I've just had enough.

You know what's exasperating?

You send in the application, being shortlisted, went for the interview etc only to be told that you're missing the key experience of what they're looking for.

Why do they shortlist you in the first place!

Soccermumamir · 22/10/2024 18:09

I haven't applied for any other jobs yet, as haven't seen any I liked the sound of. The one I applied for is still sat that, apparently 'unviewed'. So think I'll give up hope with that one.

Been so stressed at work this week and it's only day 2. Ended up battling migraines. Feel so stressed out.

Well better get back to looking at other jobs 🤷‍♀️

Auburngal · 22/10/2024 19:33

Job website search engines should be better designed. I put down 15 miles of my town where I live. Get email alerts for jobs which are 40 miles away! This was the issue which pissed me off 17 years ago when I last was looking for work.

CliveNextDoor · 22/10/2024 20:13

This is me! Can't do another day in a school, I'm looking at totally different things now.

Thanks everyone for the good luck, I'll let you know how I get on! 🙌

OP posts:
ScottBakula · 22/10/2024 20:14

@Auburngal , I agree some seem to just completely ignore the filters they put in place.
I don't drive but the amount of jobs that I got sent either specifically said I needed to drive or the jobs were 20 + miles away . Or that I'd need to be experienced in xyz , when I have no idea what xyz is .

Gcn · 22/10/2024 20:19

Joining - good luck tomorrow @CliveNextDoor

I've got an interview next week for a promoted post. 3 internal applicants. Uhmmed and ahhed about applying, and am now desperate to get it. Current team are toxic.

CliveNextDoor · 23/10/2024 14:07

Interview went well, the hiring manager was lovely. I'd like it more than I expect, so hopefully I'll hear soon. Fingers crossed.

Good luck @Gcn it's horrible when you hate your team. Hope this is the change you need!

Hello everyone, I'm trying to write an ad along the lines of 'I work from home for a <business type> and am looking for more hours' to place in local sm groups. Any advice welcome. Everything I search for is for employers not wannabe employees. Thank you.

ScottBakula · 23/10/2024 21:22

I don't think you are likely to get a lot of interest on sm , I think there would be a lot of people sceptical about your experience/ qualifications/ work ethics .
By no means am I saying they should be , but at the moment it's a employers market so they can pick who they want for what ever reason.

I think you would be better off approaching specific companies that are in your field that you'd like to work for.
Find out as much as you can about them and approach the head of the most suitable department.
Don't wait for a job to be advertised, tell them you can do the job they didn't even know needed doing , sell yourself , your knowledge ect.

Apillthatmakesyousayalltherightstuff · 23/10/2024 21:46

Thanks ScottB (love your work btw ;)), that does sound like a better approach. I will work on that tomorrow; if a covering letter and CV can get me in the door I may do better than a couple of paragraphs on sm. Worth a try, anyway.

Thanks for taking the time to explain.

ScottBakula · 23/10/2024 22:49

You're welcome, (Takes a small bow)

If you can give some examples of your work I think that may help too , obviously go carefully not to share your other customers info or anything you have created that they could swipe.
If you are going to use sm to gain notice ( absolutely nothing wrong with this ) you need to go careful , particularly with things like FB , prospective employers can poke about and read all your stories inc that drunk snog you had / shouting match with ex / your political views/ etc .

Think
"would i write all this down and hand it to a prospective employer or client along with my cv and cover letter"

I have done lots of interviews in the past and without a doubt i have dismissed some people applications because of the stuff they post on fb.
Getting drunk every now and then , no problem, legless every weekend nope , obviously racist, sexist, homophobic a def no .
I am definitely not accusing you of any of them but you may want to look over your post with a critical eye
.
If you haven't got one already a LinkedIn account might be a good idea as it's just professional stuff on their .

Good luck !🙂

Auburngal · 24/10/2024 09:00

One problem that potential employers will see is that I have not worked in a remote or hybrid role before. If they actually look at my CV - I started my last job in 2007 though in retail environment.

My previous customer service and admin roles happened when this type of work you couldn't do at home!

CliveNextDoor · 24/10/2024 17:58

I got the job 😃

Now in negotiations about hours/days as it's part time. If things aren't what I'd like though I'd leave it. But yay!

Thanks for all the well wishing and good vibes
