Come and hang out with us here in that horrible space between endless applications, waiting and interviews.

The job I like the look of for the civil service ends in a few days, and I really need to motivate myself to do the application, but it's the personal statement putting me off. I need a job but I'm dying a slow death from all of the applications!

Hi everyone! Can I rant about my bf's job search? Cause I'm getting frustrated to the situation.

My bf is specialised in short term contracts to help out departments that are busy and short staffed. For years he's gotten jobs no problem. Like always several new offers when contracts end. But now? It is a wild wild west this time. He has gotten offers but none that he could take. Offers are good.

First offer was bad vibes. The recruiter called daily to give updates but wouldn't really find out any info about the job. The hiring manager couldn't give a job descption, just that there will be varying tasks. Then the offer letter had a different title and lower salary than discussed. The recrutier called several times a day and pushed bf to accept and when he asked about the title and salary and job description aparently they'd figure it out when he starts.

Second offer was a place in London. Interesting job but unfortunately their version of hybrid was 3-4 days a week in the office and then full week once a month and we couldn't really afford the daily commute/Hotel in London with the salary offered. The train prices are insane.

Third offer was fairly local all good. The recruiter was annoying but oh well. Offer accepted, all information sent and then crickets. A week later the recruiter calls that they've decided not to hire anyone.

If your flexible hybrid work means 4 days in the office, please tell that in the listing. Don't advertise flexiblity and remote if it isn't. Can you please make trains make the f-ing trains cheaper.

Auburngal · 08/11/2024 07:44

I had a posting for a remote job and in the small print said 'at least once a month you need to visit head office in...' Head office is 200 miles from here. Willing to do that if its 50 miles.

If I applied and was successful for that job I would be fretting over the 400 mile trip a fortnight before.

ToddlerMumma · 08/11/2024 08:31

I applied for an internal, sideways move job yesterday. It's a slightly different profession but I defo have the transferable skills. Fingers crossed!

Celticrosewave · 08/11/2024 10:22

Another “thanks but no thanks” email. I think something must be wrong with my CV! As the role I applied for (weeks and weeks ago) is very unique and I matched the job spec perfectly 😭 (it’s the same as my current role but for another business)

Gutted. And pondering what on earth went wrong?

Maybe they had someone in mind already.

I think many employers think because I have been working in retail for 17 years I don’t have computer experience. Of course I do! I used handsets which are mini computers, had to do training online. Then use computers outside work.

Obviously those people do see my CV and put on the rejection pile have not worked in retail recently. Or have friends and family who have. My job had a lot changed in the 17 years I was there.

LeafyGreenSalad · 08/11/2024 13:08

So many rejections. I thought I was quite resilient but it is quite difficult to take after a while. I have good qualifications and experience, but even applying for jobs I could do standing on my head or a fraction of the salary I should be on are not happening. Hard not to let that desperation come across to employers. Doing everything I can looking inside my industry and further afield. Really need life to throw me a bone

Rewis · 08/11/2024 13:09

Since when is HR manager a Chief Colleague Officer?

CliveNextDoor · 08/11/2024 15:02

The rejections are really hard to take, especially when you know you'd be a good fit for the job.

OP posts:
ProfessorInkling · 08/11/2024 16:04

Ah, sorry to those dealing with rejections this week.

My frustration this week is completing an application and then seeing the closing date extended... by three weeks! Come on guys I need a new job this year please 😯

@CliveNextDoor sending strength to start your Civil Service app! I didn't make shortlisting for a civil service role recently, I was gutted but I know I could've done better on my personal statement.

Celticrosewave · 08/11/2024 16:13

I know of 90 redundancies that have been announced across 3 businesses in the last 3 days.

so the pool of applicants just became a lake of applicants. Highly skilled technical people who are willing to work for NMW to pay their mortgages.

What a crappy time!

Ratisshortforratthew · 08/11/2024 16:31

I’m self employed but applied for a part time role as it would’ve been nice to have the regular income and still time for other freelance work. It was a bit too junior for me and badly paid but really relevant to the kind of work I want to do more of. I was invited to an interview but asked to complete a task before I’d even had the interview, and the task amounted to about 2 days worth of strategic and creative work! Absolute pisstake. I declined.

LeafyGreenSalad · 08/11/2024 19:22

The ones with tasks to complete are so annoying. It's manageable when your working and just casually looking, but when you're unemployed, application time is really precious and days can't be wasted on projects for jobs you probably won't get.

Soccermumamir · 09/11/2024 09:39

Need to catch up with this thread. A job has come up, yey. They have a full time and part time position, so I've applied for both lol 😆

I really need to leave my current job. It's too stressful and I'm working 3 peoples jobs. I'm currently laid up with chronic stress migraine again. Yet another day I've lost thanks to my job. Not sure how much longer I can do this for. Feel like contacting my GP and getting a fitnote for the first time in my life 😔

ProfessorInkling · 09/11/2024 10:46

@Soccermumamir do it - why shouldn't you? Please put your health before work!

I'm a loyal and hard-working employee but work cannot be more important than being well.

Thank you for replying. I don't like the thought of letting the team down or the students 😔 I'm gonna ring the doctors on Monday and speak to them and see if they can up my dosage of Amitriptyline. I'm term time, so when I was off over the summer and October half term I didn't have 1 migraine. An odd headache, which I can deal with. But lately my migraines are getting worse. To the point I'm being physically sick with them too.

MyCatIsBeautiful · 09/11/2024 11:23

Can I join? I’m in a dilemma.

Job 1 - more money, step up in job title, same field.

Job 2 - slightly less pay increase, side step.

Ive got an interview for job 1, not sure when yet. Not heard about interview for job 2 yet but think I’ll get one.

I actually want job 2 even though it’s less of a pay increase. But am stressing over the timings of interviews.

Eye roll.

I have to apply for the civil service job today, it closes at midnight and I've put it off til now. It's going to be a long evening and annoyingly I'm out all day. I'd prefer to be in my pjs, doing a craft and watching Strictly than doing a job application! But it's a great job, so, worth it.

OP posts:
Auburngal · 10/11/2024 12:07

@ForMintFinch Those jobs really piss me off. People realise how shit they are and leave, like myself after 2.5 hours (I did that 21 years ago) and keep recruiting because of people realise how shit these jobs are.

Stay away from jobs with OTE on job descriptions

Aww good luck. I've never applied for a civil service job before, but hear the application process is long. Once it's done, it's done and off your to-do list 🙂👍

I agree. I've just seen another job but it just says part time. No salary or hours, so will give it a wide birth I think. I prefer jobs to state the hours needed a week, otherwise it's a no-go for me lol

Celticrosewave · 10/11/2024 12:43

Feel utterly sick at the thought of work tomorrow.

I refuse to apply for jobs advertised using emojis in the job description.

ProfessorInkling · 10/11/2024 15:16

C'mon @CliveNextDoor we're waving pom poms over here for you Flowers you can do it!

Me too @Celticrosewave , me too. For me it's another day of being given nothing meaningful to do, but also being expected to keep busy despite me asking for more tasks since I started at the beginning of this year. I have never been so under-utilised in my life and it is not a fun place to be.

Who's waiting to hear from interviews this week, and who's waiting for closing dates and shortlisting?

I am waiting on one interview, one has just closed, and one has a week left for applications. Everything else has been a no, so I need to get some more applications out.
