Civil Service Pre-Employment checks- how long?!

Hi,

I’ve currently been waiting 8 weeks to receive a formal offer for the Home Office. I have completed the Security Vetting questionnaire which now shows as completed on their site.

Any idea how much longer I should expect to wait? I applied for this job a year ago! It seems like it’s no secret but their recruitment process seems so clumsy!

Anyone? Thanks!

The difficulty with CS is that there are several steps in the recruitment process involving multiple handoffs to different departments, so of which are government, some outsourced partners.

MOD is currently trying to mitigate this by ensuring better communication with candidates so weeks or months don't go by with no updates on progress being made. That's normally the reason why candidates are lost, because they lose faith in their application being processed.

Never hand your notice in until they advise you it's safe to do so! They make that point very clear throughout but people seem intent on cutting ties with their current employer despite being told they must achieve Security vetting.

It does take a while but now you have CTC it should be relatively swift. Depends on how many they are trying to get in, as they might want to train you all together? That's what happened when I joined Immigration

MrsHobbs · 06/07/2018 11:09

So an update on my situation- I eventually got a start date come through on 19/05- I start this coming Monday! So 7 months from provisional offer to actually starting. I still don’t know where I’m going to be based though- when I applied for the job in March 17 it was based in the city centre, but they’ve now expanded it to two other locations now and will only tell you where your first day will be based- then they tell you once you’re there where you’re going to be posted!

So it’s still a very disorganised process and doesn’t really seem fair about the locations but anyone whose still waiting for a start date- hang in there! It is coming!

I’ve had my provisional offer for Border Force Officer on 25th June and submitted all of the forms within 48hrs. Now I’m waiting on the Security Check form arriving. I’ve been in touch with my HO already to confirm my identity documents but the wait is killing me. Looking forward to getting the SC forms away and making some progress, apparently they’re short staffed where I’ll be going and I’m ready for a new start.

FatCow2018 · 16/07/2018 12:39

When I first joined the prison service I waited I months for CTC and SC clearance to go through, so it can take a while. In my case it was due to a massive backlog due to mass-recruitment.

thinkaboutit999 · 16/07/2018 14:05

Thanks FC2018, I’m having a torrid time in my current job so I’m just willing things to go as quickly as possible. How long did you wait for the SC form to arrive after the first set of forms?

FatCow2018 · 16/07/2018 16:59

I was appointed in post with CTC and then the SC forms went off and came back about 3 weeks later. Hopefully you can do the same but if not, if CTC is clear SC doesn't take long following it.

thinkaboutit999 · 16/07/2018 17:14

Hopefully it’ll show up this week then, because we’re at the three week mark pretty much, I’m an external applicant so I’d imagine the onboarding process might take a little longer than I’d like. Especially as I need to give 2 months notice to my current employer.

MonsterRehab23 · 01/08/2018 21:42

Joining this thread very late! I’ve had a provisional offer from HO end of June for EO caseworker and still waiting for formal offer. Is anyone in the same boat or has everyone started their new roles?

daisychain01 · 02/08/2018 05:04

Ironically External candidates can be quicker to onboard than internal moves, which seems crazy. Internal moves require lots of back and forth between departments, HR processes, things falling through the cracks in the paving stones lol.

If the external candidate has a relatively simplistic past history and if the recruiting manager states it as a priority niche role it sometimes quickens the cycle, eg worked in UK for whole career, British Subject, no past financial challenges, uncomplex references from previous employers etc.

Bulk recruitment campaigns are the world's worst for poor candidate experience, but you just have to hang on in there and it all comes good in the end!

thinkaboutit999 · 02/08/2018 10:08

I finally received my security check forms (which took a few hours to complete) last week and submitted them on Sunday. The accompanying email told me that it will likely take 40 days to complete so I’ve set a countdown on my phone screen. Can’t wait to get started now.

MonsterRehab23 · 02/08/2018 14:41

I had to fill out 5 forms when I received my provisional offer. Is there anymore you have to fill in? Recruitment service was in contact a few weeks ago over a name change- all sorted quickly. None of my referees have been contacted yet afaik. Also arranged for kids to start full-time childcare in early September but may need to push date back. Hope everyone gets start dates soon

tashajob · 10/08/2018 19:29

Hi guys, I got my EO Caseworker offer for Immigration Enforcement on June 29th, but haven't had any updates yet. Anyone else get an offer around the same time & still waiting? I haven't even been told what the prospective time-frame is...

ChristineG75 · 30/08/2018 20:51

I was told on 8th that i had the job of AO caseworker but as yet im still waiting for start date..very frustrating

smudgedlipstick · 30/08/2018 20:53

My formal offer took 5 months and I was already civil service just transferring between departments!

smudgedlipstick · 30/08/2018 20:57

I know there is a big recruitment freeze on in border force at the moment so you may be waiting a while longer yet!

ChristineG75 · 30/08/2018 21:16

To add to my previous post..i meant to say i got the job offer on 8th june and still no start date

thinkaboutit999 · 31/08/2018 10:22

I’ve had my SC back (in record time it seems of less than three weeks) so am just waiting now. I’ve spoken to the port who’ve told me to bear with them as there’s a lot of activity in recruitment at the moment.

MonumentVal · 31/08/2018 10:36

They're trying to speed up the process for priority roles given the huge amount of recruitment atm. I got SC done in under a week (internal) but CTC and SC for externals seems to be taking about 6 weeks plus central recruitment faff time. I'm waiting for some recruits!

MonsterRehab23 · 07/09/2018 16:06

Does anyone know how long it takes after CTC has came back? I received my CTC clearance on Wed but still don’t know if I have a formal offer. Is anyone in this boat?

thinkaboutit999 · 07/09/2018 17:12

Monster, took two/three weeks after a few emails back and forth.

MonsterRehab23 · 07/09/2018 21:01

Thanks. Hopefully won’t be too long now.

geowest · 08/09/2018 03:04

I am awaiting CTC clearance.

I submitted my forms on the 27th July and still waiting. Does anyone know how long it will take?

daisychain01 · 08/09/2018 07:00

geowest Id take time to read the upthread comments as people have answered based on their own experience but nobody can predict for anyone else's personal circumstances. So it could be 6 weeks or more / less. It entirely depends on your own personal life history and how much digging around they have to do,

Based on experiences it seems like you're coming up to the 6 week mark, so likely you will hear soon.

ChristineG75 · 08/09/2018 07:40

I had a courtesy call on Monday asking if I'd received my security check? Because i hadn't..she said she will get it sent asap..still waiting..i received my formal offer of a job on 8th June. How long once i get the security link?
