Happy May! one of the loveliest of months and this morning looks like a good start to it.

I was momentarily thrown by HAGADAPA until a few more brain cells woke up, and can’t remember what the last A is for
Have as good a day as possible … all, is it?

DeanElderberry · 01/05/2026 07:47

yes, that's it.

AuntieMsDamsonCrumble · 01/05/2026 08:01

Happy May Day Bluestockingers!

The gerbils have washed their faces in the morning dew (thanks Deano)and are just starting their maypole dance on the village green. There was almost an ’incident’ after Gretchen misunderstood the news that they were going to do a pole dance, but a quiet word of explanation by Grindelwald got things back on track.

May Day has its origins in the Roman festival of Floralia, Flora being the Roman goddess of growing things and fertility. It is also celebrated in Celtic lore as Beltane, or Calan Haf in Wales, from where the tradition of maypole dancing originated.

It was almost exactly just like that when I washed my face, no gerbils but long grass with real bluebells (that scent) and buttercups. I picked a few and have a little vase with them, a fringe cup, a pink scented geranium and a little cow parsley. I'll be setting up my May altar later.

Rosy is alleging that she is starving so I'd better get up produce food and empty the dishbasher.

Here's Canon Sydney McKewan doing his traditional thing.

we’re in the high 900s, I’ll make a new thread. Hang on a mo…

I love that Marie de Gournay has been upgraded to Writer, Philosopher and Badass😂
or as it appears in contemporary writing: Badaff

[sorry - I've been reading my reprint of an 18c century Gaelic dictionary, and can't help laughing at words like 'flut']

I was ancestor-hunting once and came across information on 'the baftard child of...'
Life was brutal back then.

We used to celebrate dancing around the may pole in the village i lived, in the sixties last century

Mayday/Bealtaine greetings to all!
Thank you for 'Bring Flowers of the Rarest', sung by Canon Sydney McEwen, Deano, May wouldn't be the same without itSmile
I can guarantee it will be played on Irish radio today - no matter how modern or 'progressive' or secular or anything else Irish society is [I know, I know 'discuss in 2,500 words..'] somebody will request 'Bring Flowers..' and some presenter will respond 'Ah sure it's the 1st of May, we have to play it..'
It's just part of the aural fabric of Mayday here for as long as I can remember.

Thank you for the new thread, Errol.

The really important significance of 1st May here in the Bluestocking is that it is, if I remember rightly, the 'birth'day of ...... ✨BATSHIT
Our delightful energetic characterful loyal entertaining adventurous doggie!
Colin is all dressed up for the party.🎈🎂🎉
Happy birthday Batshit!

And a big hello to Brains who will act as if she isn't the slightest bit jealous😏

Colin would also like to extend an invitation to any dogs who have long leads to join him in the traditional doggy maypole dance - they practice year round.

Boiledbeetle · 01/05/2026 09:59

I woke up on the new thread. Which gerbil is responsible???

I've had to return as whilst I got moved my super secret Tunnock's stash didn't. Gloria tried to claim it was because the secret loft I hid them in no longer exists.

I'll be in the East wing taking swings at the ceiling with a lump hammer.

ErrolTheDragon · 01/05/2026 10:00

I’m off out so please can someone repost the forward link and shut up shop here.

Boiledbeetle · 01/05/2026 10:07

Grrrrrrrrrrrr.

Where are they?

When you said ' I'll be in the East wing taking swings at the ceiling with a lump hammer.' I thought this was the start of work to build a new ballroom in the East Wing, a bigly, beautiful ballroom..Grin

😂

Still no Tunnock's to be found. I reckon a certain regular with a spiky coat and a penchant for snowballs has beat me to them.

Boiledbeetle · 01/05/2026 10:18

Maud is currently thinking of setting up a new business thanks to @AlexandraLeaving "Maud-o-graph" comment over on the Woolly Hugs thread.

She's currently working on her flyer design, and may soon be touting for customers.

You have been warned!

FOUND THEM!

Right, I'll get these moved over to the new thread.

I'll leave the locking up to a responsible person.

Well, I AM surprised. When I spoke to Carmela last night, she said that Glenda had said that Maud had said that Colin had said that Gloria had said that there were NO Tunnocks up there when last they had checked.

Hmmmm...

AngleofRepose · 01/05/2026 10:36

I'm new here (sort of) so I don't know how to lock up, sorry! And I have to go out now, should have left 5 mins ago!!
Bye! See you at the new place!

Boiledbeetle · 01/05/2026 10:41

Having returned once more to check there definitely isn't any more Tunnock's lying around it appears I am the responsible person who has been tasked with locking up.

Last call.

Anyone still lurking or snoozing?

Boiledbeetle · 01/05/2026 10:45

Germonleen, don't forget to take the first aid kit with you.

Gaynor, there's a pile of clean tea towels on the side, can you shove them under your arm.
