I have one for the living room in the winter, have it on almost constantly. Maybe that's why my electricity bill was so high this past winter!

Oh, that would definitely contribute. :(

WearyAuldWumman · 28/04/2026 18:30

It's either that or just leave the windows open all winter, which I do when I can, but it rains so much!!
My house is old, zero insulation I imagine, full of cracks and crevices, and loads of character! (but character doesn't keep the house warm and dry)

AuntieMsDamsonCrumble · 28/04/2026 18:35

I don't do the late nights either Fuzzy, so I often open the thread in the morning to find it has moved on 2-3 pages. I don't always have anything to say about the topics under discussion, so I just react to some of the posts to show I'm around and listening.

ooh, recipe please!

The important thing is the butter. Really, really excellent quality butter is the difference between amazing shortbread and naff shortbread at 58p a packet.

225g best quality salted butter
110g caster sugar
275g plain flour

Beat the butter and sugar for at least 4 minutes until fluffy and light. Mix in the flour. Add whatever flavours you like. Roll into a sausage and chill for a bit, then slice into discs and bake at about Fan 170 for 12-15 minutes depending on the vagaries of your oven.

Leave to cool for 10 minutes before moving from the baking sheet.

Longley Farm butter is particularly good. Some Waitrose and Morrison's branches stock it if you aren't near enough to get it direct. Good French butter is also worth it. Lurpack, not so much.

Flavours we like include lemon zest, with or without poppy seeds; dark chocolate chips and cranberries; crystalised ginger; white chocolate chips and sour cherries; finely chopped hazelnuts or pistachio or pecans; mixed spice and mixed peel (quite Christmassy) etc etc

Magpiecomplex · 28/04/2026 18:45

Is Shirgar butter still available? I'm sure it used to be Sîrgar. Flat round slabs of properly salted Welsh butter, and my guilty treat when on holiday in that wonderful country.

They might have that at my local farm shop. I'm sure I've seen rounds of butter in there (from afar, I don't buy butter except at Christmas).

I haven’t got a dehumidifier.

Can I have one of your imaginary ones, @Boiledbeetle?

I would totally wear that T-shirt although I think it would be even better if the picture of the gerbil on it would be the picture of Maud wearing the T-shirt, like those pictures in a picture in a picture. I have no idea what those are called.
Also, could I have a large vat of Aperol or Sarti Spritz, please. I need to distract myself from that thread.

I've had to switch to Grok who prefers the generic woman to be younger than Co Pilot (Co Pilot prefers middle aged women)

Just spent three hours going through three will’s, to try and figure out legal succession of said wills, and what my deceased friends estate is likely to get. For the nominated beneficiaries of her will, may inherit.

Did not help that the executor had no clue whatsoever of her own duties, and that she must instruct a solicitor as there are two complex trusts, to boot my friend predeceased her mother, who was unduly influenced by a fraudster who became a beneficiary of the mothers estate.

They just need to instruct a solicitor pronto, but it took a while of scare tactics to ram that home.

Chuck in the fact that the executor has ADHD and is autistic, so kept wandering off on tangents.

I have a headache.

Double gin ice and a slice please.

On another note am going back to the mad thread, if still going, to chuck in that funny notion of the law, ergo the SC ruling which nobody appears to have mentioned.

Boiledbeetle · 28/04/2026 18:55

EdithStourton · 28/04/2026 14:56

Also, I have a different dehumidifier.
This means that I am not a figment of Boily's imagination.

I wouldn't bet on it!

Waitwhat23 · 28/04/2026 18:56

The best butter I have ever eaten is a French one called Échiré.

God, it's good.

Magpiecomplex · 28/04/2026 18:56

I feel deprived. Apparently we're all members of a cult, but I didn't get a membership card or anything. No robes, no book of secret rituals, not a sausage. Very sub-standard culting all round, really.
Unless the dehumidifiers are a recognition signal, in which case can I have one too please Boily?

Boiledbeetle · 28/04/2026 18:56

ifIwerenotanandroid · 28/04/2026 15:20

Ditto.

ETA: but since hers is different too, does that mean one of us (or both) might actually BE Boily?

Edited

That is a possibility.

AuntieMsDamsonCrumble · 28/04/2026 18:59

Thanks for the recipe Pasta I may need to make shortbread tomorrow and I have all the ingredients.

I like President unsalted French butter for baking.

EmpressaurusKitty · 28/04/2026 16:54

Gosie is very wise.

Gin for me too please, bar gerbil.

My microwave broke so I took it to the local electrical recycling point this morning in an ikea bag, which involved a bus journey & walking about a mile with it over my shoulder. That’s definitely enough exercise for one day & requires extra chocolate.

I just stuck mine in a binbag and the binmen took it.

I don't recycle.

We don’t even all vote the same, if at all … tsk

lcakethereforeIam · 28/04/2026 19:24

It has to be the dehumidifiers 👍 That might explain the camels anyway.

Think of the Bluestocking as a pub, which of course it is! Supposing one had a local, you wouldn’t hear all the conversations all the time. You can come and go as and when you want.
Of course it’s then possible that a person may bounce in full of the joys of spring after some particularly difficult news has been shared - well, as with a real pub I’m sure that’ll be understood and someone can have a quiet word to the wise.

I’m going to admit to my time-saving heresy…if I’m catching up I tend to skim read many of the doings of the gerbils, charming as they are.ShockBlush

I sort of stepped on the leg of my fancy schmancy Sweaty Betty yoga leggings as I hauled them off this afternoon, staggered and slightly ripped the top stitching.

On the plus side, they still seem to be in once piece, I've worn them a lot and they were half price. I'll just keep wearing them until it gets critical.

Depending on where your leggings are ripped, could they become gender critical if gets worse?😁

Disclaimer: gender is an unproven, ill-defined concept.
But never et an unproven, ill-defined concept get in the way of a joke,eh?😉
