Do you feel that gender identity exists and is innate?

In progressive circles, there's the concept of 'gender identity' where everyone has a gender (not necessarily corresponding to their sex) that is unchangeable and inherent to them as a person. Do you agree with this? Why or why not?

No. I think that is just personality. I also think personality is changeable.

TheywontletmehavethenameIwant · 07/04/2026 20:23

No, it's a load of bollocks that has been entirely invented by academia.

ChamonixMountainBum · 07/04/2026 20:24

You are fishing with dynamite

Bunnyofhope · 07/04/2026 20:24

Not really. I don't think anyone has a sense of gender identity. They have their sex and their personality. That's all. Some people seem to call part of their personality their 'gender identity ' But God knows what they mean by that.

GallantKumquat · 07/04/2026 20:25

Do you feel that gender identity exists (no) and is innate? (and therefore) no.

No

It's Progressive Sexism for people who don't like to think of themselves as sexist.

Hoardasurass · 07/04/2026 20:27

No i don't believe anyone has a soul gendered or otherwise.
Also the term gender identity was created by a disgraced former Dr (John mooney sp) to excuse his sexual abuse of twin boys.

hahabahbag · 07/04/2026 20:27

Yes it’s usually innate and usually matches your sex but for a tiny percentage it is the opposite to their sex and for others it’s not absolute, for others gender is tied up with other psychological issues

MotherofPufflings · 07/04/2026 20:28

No, I think that people generally recognise that they are a particular sex as young children. I think it's possible that a very small number feel that they "should" have been born a different sex, but this is due to either mental health problems or some sort of (currently unknown) pathological process of brain development. But this doesn't mean that they actually are a different sex.

MagpiePi · 07/04/2026 20:28

No, I don’t believe in gender identity

Why do you think people who believe this are progressive?

StormyPotatoes · 07/04/2026 20:29

Do you, OP? What does a gender identity feel like? How would you know you have one?

Is this like having a belief in an omnipotent being? You can’t see, hear or feel it, but some people have convinced you it’s definitely a real thing so you start to manifest a gender identity too?

Usernamenotfound1 · 07/04/2026 20:29

No.

being female does not make me want to wear skirts and make up and be a domestic slave.

gender is a social construct.

Mengo · 07/04/2026 20:29

No. We have personalities, which sometimes mean that some women (like me) feel more comfortable having short hair, no makeup, and don’t fit typical female stereotypes.
Sadly we live in a world where stereotypes have become ridiculously adhered to to the point where girls who would be seen as tomboys are being told they are actually boys. I know, bonkers!

Babyboomtastic · 07/04/2026 20:29

I think you've mixed up progressive with regressive 🤔

TakeTheCuntingQuichePatricia · 07/04/2026 20:30

Does gender identity exist? I dont know. I don't have any innate, inner feelings about being female. I just am. But other people do (apparently) have this feeling and I cant tell them they are wrong. In the same way I've got an inner belief in God but others don't.

Regardless of this innate gender or not, men dont belong in women's single sex spaces.

ShesRunningOutTheDoor · 07/04/2026 20:30

No I think it’s linked to your genetic code and therefore sex and hormones. Eg becoming pregnant your focus / priorities change due to hormones. All passed down by survival of the fittest and in our very DNA

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 07/04/2026 20:31

No. Sex is innate. 'Gender identity' is a load of blue -haired bollocks.

TwistedWonder · 07/04/2026 20:31

No. I believe in biological sex. So called gender is based on outdated stereotypes of what a man and a woman ‘should’ be and it’s meaningless.

The concept of gendered souls is bollocks imo

theilltemperedamateur · 07/04/2026 20:32

It's a useful therapeutic concept, but only for people with genetic mutations that cause defective or absent testosterone processing/androgen signalling. They may need to make choices about treatment and/or about whether to get their birth registration corrected. Their preference can be conceptualised as an identity.

In anyone else, it's an unfalsifiable proposition, so I'm agnostic, with a soupçon of 🙄

FourSevenThree · 07/04/2026 20:32

No.

There is biological sex. Than there is societal gender - roles, pressures, stereotypes. And the third part is what every individual makes of it for themselves. The third part partially overlaps with gender identity concept, but it's not innate and unchangeable - given it is a perosnal reaction to societal gender, it doesn't exist without that.

In my case it means, that I saw myself for a long time as agender, to distance myself from (my interpretation of) social gender, but later decided that (as an adult human female) whatever I do is a woman's way, so I can as well be a woman.

mattala · 07/04/2026 20:33

Nobody exists in a vacuum. Uk is a gendered country. You live in the uk you have a gender identity whether you like it or not. How you present impacts how you are treated.
you can’t just opt out of sexism unfortunately, I tried it didn’t work

StormyPotatoes · 07/04/2026 20:33

I can’t quite tell what’s progressive about people who believe in gender identity. Gender can only refer to gender stereotypes and suggesting you match the ones forced on your sex (which of course varies culture to culture) seems very reductive. Unless you have a different meaning of gender?

Absolutely this. Couldn't have put it better.

What is a gendered country?
Also how can I have a gender identity when I don't believe in it?
