Robin Ince quits working for the BBC over his support for men in dresses and terrorists

Shame really he’s a nice guy, a huge bibliophile, met him a few times at book signings, the last live show of his I saw he did shoehorn in “and of course trans women are real women” or some such nonsense.

guessing the infinite monkey cage is cancelled now, that was in my top five podcasts.

can’t do a popular science show and think women can have a penis though. Wonder what Brian thinks?

the video of his love resignation , presumably at the end of a monkey cage recording, is here
https://www.reddit.com/r/transgenderUK/comments/1plg02g/bbc_presenter_robert_ince_claims_he_has_been/

notably he doesn’t say how men in dresses are being treated badly. Everyone has a blind spot.

I was surprised when I heard a clip of him commentating on cricket how good he was, I find him too try hard on News Quiz.

Cricket is very much his thing.

Andy Zaltzman would be a great replacement

Could not be a bigger twat about gender and woke left crap.I used to be a paid supporter of his personal podcast the bugle, went to live shows etc and one episode they laid into JKR for all the wrong reasons - I emailed them, told them why, stopped everything. Bellend. All those “protect young trans people” jokes in the news quiz are his.

Read his blue sky statement my summary is below:

Blah blah blah I've been told I need to obey the same rules as everyone else but I'm special so I shouldn't have to. I've worked more than my contracted hours for my big pay check but now I'm flouncing. Blah blah. I intend to be an ally until I say something the blue hairs don't like and the cancel me. Blah blah allow me to compare myself to people who have standards. Right I'm off to obscurity

Haha spot on 😂

nauticant · 13/12/2025 12:48

I hope this thread hasn't felt like a kicking for you OP. It's fine to have a "love the work despite this artist" approach, it's just that for me personally someone adhering to genderism is a turn-off that I can't get around.

I don't know much about Ince, but I do know that when I see someone refer to "transphobes" I see it as a reflection of their own potential bigotry.

To reduce such a complex issue and plethora of concerns, such a disparate group of people, to this?

I was thinking, after reading his posts - I don't think I could even use the word "racists" or "homophobes". There's a visceral aversion to the dehumanised nominalised adjective - it just feels so unpleasant and reductive. I'd always go for something like, "people with racist views", and probably more likely, "people with unambiguously racist views", to acknowledge another somewhat complex context in which there are valid concerns about immigration that are too easily dismissed as racism.

"Transphobe" is, to me, usually a tell for a disturbingly simplistic view of the world, or activist tendencies. For a lack of maturity and empathy, certainly.

Fully agree.

See the things is - I LOVE all those points quoted - except the trans madness, thats why I like him (liked) amiable, science promoter, skeptic and atheist. How the hell he fell into this hole its a shame, IMO. But still, clearly disliked :)

Oh, I agree, that's why people like him and, say, Alice Roberts are so desperately disappointing. The great revealer indeed.

Not at all!!

If I say separate the art from the artist to everyone all the time it needs to go both ways for me, but sometimes it doesn’t. I said he was a nice bloke because I met him briefly a few times, he really was interested in books a lot and we chatted about that, enjoyed it. I suspected there was a bit more to it - as everyone is revealing!! But didn’t know it was this bad at all

Basically he loves second hand book shops as much as I do and we bonded for a few minutes other that :D

He does a "...but...er..." pause when he thinks he has said something REALLY clever, so there is enough of a break for the audience to laugh, that puts me off listening to IMC.

Yeah it's the difference between someone enjoying themselves being funny, and someone displaying themselves being funny.

Meanwhile Robin Ince genuinely has been cancelled for daring to voice his opinions and for defending trans people. Where's the outrage from the "cancel culture" lot?

Wasn't John Oliver involved in the Bugle?

I think it’s usual in statements like this to include something on the lines of “I’d like to thank the wonderful production team of The Infinite monkey cage and my talented co-presenter Brian Cox, with whom I enjoyed a very happy collaboration for x years.”

Instead he’s written a very petulant statement that makes him look like an angry toddler whose mum has told him he can’t have a second chocolate biscuit.

"Some BBC insiders, though, are somewhat more sceptical about Ince’s leaving. Several noted that relations between Ince and his co-host Cox had been chillier in recent years, making the show’s production somewhat fraught. At least one suggested Ince was not always the most enjoyable talent to work with, though this is not a unique complaint at the Corporation."

Hannah fry

Unfortunately not. She made a comment on one of her shows that left me thinking 'oh no, not you as well'. I've looked but can't remember which episode but it came up on another thread and someone else recalled hearing it as well.

‘so much of the media has chosen to believe the kind and empathetic people are a fiction - they are real and so often unrepresented.’

He’a talking about trans people here, yes? How weird to assume all trans people are kind and empathetic.

In the last few weeks I have seen/heard this sort of thing countless times. ‘Trans people are the most beautiful/kindest/purest people’. What, all of them? Is there any possibility some of them could be arseholes? I find it alarming that people can think and say that trans people are all nice. No one would speak like this about any other group. I honestly think that some TRAs genuinely believe there is something other-worldly about trans people.

I guess it’s happening because the house of cards is falling down. They can no longer pretend that science or the law is on their side, so they have resorted to ‘But trans people are beautiful angels!’

WarriorN · 13/12/2025 13:26

I've just looked at his blooski and he appears to have wandered around Manchester on his own into the small hours after the recording finished. There's also a photo of him having a picnic on a gravestone. I don't think he's a well man.
