Robin Ince quits working for the BBC over his support for men in dresses and terrorists

Shame really he’s a nice guy, a huge bibliophile, met him a few times at book signings, the last live show of his I saw he did shoehorn in “and of course trans women are real women” or some such nonsense.

guessing the infinite monkey cage is cancelled now, that was in my top five podcasts.

can’t do a popular science show and think women can have a penis though. Wonder what Brian thinks?

the video of his love resignation , presumably at the end of a monkey cage recording, is here
https://www.reddit.com/r/transgenderUK/comments/1plg02g/bbc_presenter_robert_ince_claims_he_has_been/

notably he doesn’t say how men in dresses are being treated badly. Everyone has a blind spot.

His 90s shtick of talking shite very quickly ran out of road a long time ago. If they bring in a funny comedian to TIMC I might start listening again. Maybe.

PachacutisBadAuntie · 13/12/2025 11:54

Actually TIMC itself might might have run out of road. The BBC seem to be buying in a lot of podcasts and other shows now, something that I noticed really took off during covid.

Gareth Roberts in his series about insufferable middle class people wrote this back in August:

https://theageofstupid.substack.com/p/middle-class-holes-28-robin-ince

So many good points including:

"Because Robin Ince - that sceptical scourge of homeopaths, quacks, psychical charlatans and magical mountebanks, the organiser of atheist Christmas junkets and vocal supporter of the Rationalist Association and New Humanist magazine - is also a ‘trans ally’, ie a staunch advocate for men who claim to be women, and their ‘rights’. Yes, it’s our old friend genderism, The Great Revealer."

Love the way he sets himself alongside Sinead O Connor James Baldwin and Audre Lorde.

Truly one of the greats is walking among us, soooo unappreciated 😂😂😂

Flouncing out of a gig because he's had to cope with women expressing an opinion isnt him being cancelled. Hes performatively removed himself from a podcast.

Also, you know that the FSU would supportive him if he was sacked for expressing sn opinion.

Yes I noticed that as well. What an absolute bellend 🤣 I don't listen to the IMC but I saw him on House of Games a while ago and he was a smug, self satisfied, tedious plum

Good. He’s neither clever nor funny. He’s a coattails person.

I don't know much about Ince, but I do know that when I see someone refer to "transphobes" I see it as a reflection of their own potential bigotry.

To reduce such a complex issue and plethora of concerns, such a disparate group of people, to this?

I was thinking, after reading his posts - I don't think I could even use the word "racists" or "homophobes". There's a visceral aversion to the dehumanised nominalised adjective - it just feels so unpleasant and reductive. I'd always go for something like, "people with racist views", and probably more likely, "people with unambiguously racist views", to acknowledge another somewhat complex context in which there are valid concerns about immigration that are too easily dismissed as racism.

"Transphobe" is, to me, usually a tell for a disturbingly simplistic view of the world, or activist tendencies. For a lack of maturity and empathy, certainly.

Livpool · 13/12/2025 12:18

Swamphag · 13/12/2025 10:18

It's the whole "omg people are losing their jobs for standing up for transpeople"
Nobody gives a shit that many women have been put through the wringer and under threat of losing their jobs for standing up for women.
Robin Ince is a dick - supposed man of science backing something with no basis is reality. At least he has the good grace to admit he's privileged (but seems completely unable to tie that to anything other than "I'm not a poor put upon transperson" and let's face it he means trans identified males here) Wanker.

💯

Boo fucking hoo

Andy Zaltzman would be a great replacement

I agree it will be impartiality rules and him being fully on board with the omnicause.

He did say he wouldn't appear on panel shows without women represented, so he is principled.

The problem with him is that hes convinced himself that TW are women and any question around that is just wrong.

He'll talk about marginalised groups and fairness, but what he sees as fighting for the oppressed is just him refusing to listen others and not having the skills to really empathise with others and consider other opinions. He doesn't see that he, as a white rich man, is impossing his views on everyone. Which should be the last thing he would do?

I suppose to have the self confidence to get up on stage, does attract the people with egos.

Edited

I'm interested if it is impartiality rules. Does anyone really care about Robin Ince tweeting rubbish in his own time? It undermines the credibility of the Infinite Monkey Cage and makes him look like a dick, but I don't think any one is under the impression that he is representing the views of the BBC. (Unlike Lineker, I would guess that the vast majority of people in the UK have no idea who he is).

Have his tweets/bluesky made offensive comments about individuals?

He's a fan of genderism and probably wouldn't want to fall out with his sister who's a massive fan.

deadpan · 13/12/2025 12:31

FFS, who, literally who is saying trans people don't exist. If we thought they didn't why would we even be bothered. He's a fucking idiot, a science broadcaster who only believes in certain science. It's isn't a multi choice, science is science. Shut the door on your way out Robin.
Anyone who isn't a conspiracy theorist or old like me ever heard of David Bellamy? He was the Chris Packham of the 70's and 80's but decided he didn't believe in the science of global warming. Thankfully he was dropped like a hot potato by TV companies. I can't wait for that to happen to idiots like Robin Ince.
And to be honest, Cox could do with spending more time lecturing at Manchester Uni so they might axe IM altogether.

theDudesmummy · 13/12/2025 12:32

I had no idea what a smug prick he is. I have listened to IMC (although not much recently as I am now obsessed by TRIH) and I enjoyed it, although I did always have a feeling I liked Brian more than him. Reading this self-satisfied virtue signalling guff, I dont think I will bother catching up on the episodes I haven't heard.

On rereading his posts, and checking with BBC impartiality rules, think that it is the case that he was presented with an ultimatum to either stop posting pro GI posts, or relinquish his spot on the show. (and that my own earlier post on this thread was wrong. 😳) It appears that this is a case similar to Gary Lineker which also ended with a host separating because they didn't wish to curb their social media posts.

Giggorata · 13/12/2025 12:36

I hope the IMC continues with someone who doesn't have to be a scientist, but isn't a science denier.

He does a "...but...er..." pause when he thinks he has said something REALLY clever, so there is enough of a break for the audience to laugh, that puts me off listening to IMC.

junipery · 13/12/2025 12:38

I agree with other posters I’d be interested to know what’s actually happened. He has less than 50k followers on BlueSky, his posts aren’t exactly going to be a headache for Tim Davie or his replacement.

Chrysanthemum5 · 13/12/2025 12:38

Read his blue sky statement my summary is below:

Blah blah blah I've been told I need to obey the same rules as everyone else but I'm special so I shouldn't have to. I've worked more than my contracted hours for my big pay check but now I'm flouncing. Blah blah. I intend to be an ally until I say something the blue hairs don't like and the cancel me. Blah blah allow me to compare myself to people who have standards. Right I'm off to obscurity

See the things is - I LOVE all those points quoted - except the trans madness, thats why I like him (liked) amiable, science promoter, skeptic and atheist. How the hell he fell into this hole its a shame, IMO. But still, clearly disliked :)

I was surprised when I heard a clip of him commentating on cricket how good he was, I find him too try hard on News Quiz.
