Here we go again.

From Good Law Project:

We said we’d sue over Ofcom’s decision to dismiss 22,000 complaints about transphobia on TalkTV – now the regulator has caved.

But we had monitored its output for July 2025, a month in which it carried 11 discussions on trans people. And in every discussion, its hosts and guests consistently spouted transphobic views. TalkTV’s stance mirrors the broader editorial position of its sister newspaper The Times, whose toxic and intellectually dishonest campaign against trans people we believe to be a contributor to the rise in hate crime against them.

Among my misdeeds, apparently, is that I said this on air: "By definition, if you’ve had to get a piece of paper to say that you are a woman, you must accept then that you are man."

I'm happy to be found guilty of defending women's rights and safety, knowing the actual law, understanding basic biology and knowing what a woman is. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Do they have a dictionary definition of its meaning yet? Stating a transwoman is a biological man is not transphobic but a fact.

Would love to see a breakdown of those 22,000 complaints as I suspect 21,999 are saying he instead of she for a dragqueen.

SionnachRuadh · 04/12/2025 22:15

There are some very bad things happening at Ofcom - not least because the Online Harms Act encourages it to believe it has jurisdiction over the global internet.

These problems will not be solved overnight, but someone clearly needs to take Melanie Dawes aside and explain to her just how credible Jolyon is.

Justme56 · 04/12/2025 22:18

I think GLP asked people to complain. Apparently they have an example of someone referring to TW using the women’s toilets as Hulking Great Perverts. I don’t think that a presenter would have said this, more likely a caller (at a guess). No idea what the others are as they’ve just put the Hulking Great Perverts as the only example.

They haven't had 22,000 complaints. Somebody whipped up a petition that got 22,000 signatures.

I hope TalkTV has the nous to present the photographic evidence helpfully provided by said men in women’s toilets sporting erections in response to that claim.

They do have a responsibility to present the facts after all. Maybe Melanie should familiarise herself with them.

BundleBoogie · 05/12/2025 08:32

i have to say that Julia Hartley-Brewer is a bit of a star.

WorriedMutha · 05/12/2025 08:56

I think JHB will be saying bring it on. This is a battle Talk would welcome. The Martine Croxhall moment made the BBC look ridiculous. I think this is another let them speak opportunity.

JamieCannister · 05/12/2025 09:00

Surely if calling a trans'woman' a man is transphobic which is why Talk TV need to be investigated, then Ofcom need to investigate every single other channel for misogyny for not calling a trans'woman' a man?

As an aside, has there, in fact, been a rise in hate crime against trans people? Actual crime?

According to official statistics, trans hate crime fell by 11% in the year ending March 2025.

Jolyon needs a few lessons in misrepresentation and the importance of accuracy.

He has a degree in law, so this is a very bad look.

No there hadn’t been a rise.

In previous years they were so desperate to inflate the fugues that teams orgs were reporting ribbons tied to a fence, women’s rights stickers in public and in people’s front doors and ‘misgendering’ as hate crimes.

At least one police force were so desperate to bump up the figures they launched an ad campaign urging men upset because people had correctly clocked them as men to report them as hate crimes. The figures are still pretty low and dropping.

I apologise. It wasn't a petition but it also wasn't 22K individual complaints. It was a co-ordinated email campaign drummed up by GLP who submitted this complaint to OFCOM in July citing 11 examples of bias.
This complaint was followed up with orchestrated emails forwarded on from GLP allegedly from individuals confirming that they supported the complaint.

Some of the examples of TalkTV "flagrantly breaching OFCOM impartiality rules" are either utterly batshit or completely uncontroversial e.g.

0. Ian Collins, 23 June 2025, 15:34 In a conversation about pronoun use in courts, Ian Collins and a guest agreed that it is a “pretence that men can get pregnant too; it’s actually women who identify as men who are getting pregnant obviously” and that ”it’s just erasure of the actual fact that there are two sexes”.

0. Alex Phillips, 27 June 2025, 12:47 Alex Phillips said that there is an “overlap” between transpeople and men who ”dress up as women” and who would get a ”sexual kick... watching a young female police officer really squirm” having to conduct a police search of them.

0. Ian Collins, 30 June 2025, 14:21 In a discussion about an alleged problem that men could abuse data laws to pretend to be women, Ian Collins and his guest agreed that “it’s not true” that trans women are women.

Thanks for that. I have been only giving this a very brief thought, but this seems like an over reach. And I look forward to the final judgement on this as it might prevent these accusations in the future, or at least, reduce them.

OFCOM dismissed the GLP complaint but because of their whining has agreed to revisit the decision because they claim stuff like this "flagrantly breaches OFCOM impartiality rules"

0. Julia Hartley-Brewer, 9 July 2025, 12:52 A trans woman called Steph was repeatedly misgendered. Hartley-Brewer said she that she “won’t play along” with calling trans people by their chosen pronouns and claimed that “by definition, if you’ve had to get a piece of paper to say that you are a woman, you must accept then that you are a man” and that people are “not actually born in the wrong body”.

""By definition, if you’ve had to get a piece of paper to say that you are a woman, you must accept then that you are man."

This is indeed an exceptionally transphobic statement, in that it clearly expresses scorn for and summarily dismisses the lived realities of trans people.

SerendipityJane · 05/12/2025 11:23

With all the racism and borderline treason flooding our airwaves, OFCOM choose this ?

It's almost as if they aren't fit for purpose. Like every single "OF" outfit in the stable.

It's an entirely true statement.

SionnachRuadh · 05/12/2025 11:24

Anyway, Ofcom should consider the possibility that in a couple of years they might be working for a Reform government with Alex Phillips as culture minister.

Morning puppy.

The very fact that someone is calling themselves “trans” , either as a TIM or a TIW means that they have decided that they are not the sex that they were born into. It does not detract from how they wish to present themselves, or live, but to not recognise that their choice of life style means they have made decisions about their gender identification is both naive and ingenuous. A piece of paper does not and can not change biology. As everyone on the planet knows.

puppymaddness · 05/12/2025 11:32

You may believe it's true. Others do not.

Regardless - what makes this statement transphobic is that it evinces scorn and summarily dismisses the realities of trans experience.

Hey puppy you are very late clocking on to scold us this morning. Some of us have been up for hours waiting for your hilarious posts*.

*This is scornful. Describing facts isn't scornful nor is it transphobic (which etymologically means an irrational fear of "trans").

And this is why almost everybody will be thinking bring it on.

Batshit statements like 'Dismisses the realities' of pretending to be the sex you're not, is exactly the sort of thing that should be splashed across every paper in the land.

let's have it.

Let's have an entire list of things that TRAs claim are transphobic, and other people think are completely normal.
