What is Riley Gaines hiding? We investigated…

This podcast appeared in my feed today via an affiliated show… I know it is naive but it’s still hard to believe how blinkered - and unbearably smug the US liberal wing is on this. This is rubbish ( from the ‘Center for Investigative Reporting’, which I now wouldn’t trust to tell me if it was raining), but still enlightening… wondered if anyone else had heard it.

A six month dig to discredit Gaines - we’re not supposed to notice that everyone they’re trying to gotcha in this won’t dignify any of it - that finds her hiding (spoiler alert) nothing?

Interesting. Lot's of red flags about Gaines.

Gaines complained initially about competing with trans women but as she was deployed as a right wing political operative during Trump's campaign her story 'evolved' into one about sexual assault for being in the presence of an exposed trans women in the swim change rooms. All while ignoring the environment of sexual assault & abuse of her team mates at the time by her coach who she lauded as her close friend & mentor.

Gaines only claimed much later Thomas was exposing herself in the change rooms but her teams mates claim she was wrapped in a towel changing away from the others.

Whatever you think about women in sport, this appears to be another example of trans women being weaponised as a political cudgel rather than any real concern about protecting women given sexual abuse of women in sport is a common problem.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 27/11/2025 04:43

And to think this situation could have been avoided if the man involved had respected women and not used the female changing room, whether he flashed anyone or not.

The comic relief has arrived 😂 I'm sorry but you do make me laugh. You'll weaponise any comment to crowbar your way onto a thread. Even an obvious joke.

That is an absolute lie. Paula and several other women on the team have come forward and said he didn't even cover himself with a towel.

False. Only Gaines claimed Thomas exposed herself. The other complaints were about Thomas' presence in the change room with individuals in the podcast claiming she was covered in a towel & kept to herself.

And you have claimed this before sighting evidence that said no such thing.

Changing in the same room isn't the same as exposing nudity. You have no evidence any one other than Gaines said Lia Thomas exposed herself to the other swimmers.

She has said he changed in front of them. In...front.....of.....them.

What do you suppose that means, if not the obvious.

No claim of sighting nudity was made by her.

Aaaaaaand... Proving you're a man once again. It is extremely difficult for women to talk about being exposed to sexual assault. Despite being the innocent victims they feel soiled and humiliated.

Add to this the fact that Gaines knew she would be harassed for speaking up, as indeed she was (Laurie Penny vibe of "if a TW walks around showing you "her" penis in a changing room, it's your fault, you shouldn't stare")

Absolute proof you’ve never tried to put on a competitive swimming swimsuit. Why are you so invested in campaigning for males to be allowed into female spaces? You do seem to be overly determined to scold and browbeat women into compliance. Why is that? Don’t you think women deserve single sex spaces? If not, why not? If William was so upset about changing in front of his fellow men, he could have used a cubicle in the men’s. I understand they’re great for preserving dignity and privacy

The context on this thread is whether Riley Gaines is a genuine supporter of women's rights not the ethics of single sex spaces. There are plenty of threads for that.

Scanlan described Thomas’s presence as “so incredibly uncomfortable” — and not just for her. Her fellow biologically female swimmers resorted to changing in bathroom stalls and family bathrooms for the sake of their privacy, she said.

He was changing out in the open, the girls had to hide in separate bathroom stalls to change. He had the actual change room to himself after the girls fled.

In retrospect, Scanlan said the decision to allow Thomas to change in the main locker room rather than an individual family bathroom was made without any meaningful solicitation of input from her teammates, most of whom she believes shared her reservations.

hey Pablo, I was sexually assaulted as a teenager and THEN I was forced to undress with Lia Thomas in a locker room 18 times per WEEK I was on the team. He is a man. It was disgusting, violating and traumatizing. Is that enough for you to understand?*

What a desperate reach.

Geez, I dunno maybe a 6 foot four male bodied person might have a bulge showing in a swimsuit?

Maybe someone told her she didn't have surgery?

The facts are she has made no such claim of nudity.

ah the classic - If you don’t like undressing with Lia Thomas… YOU need therapy. Why is he not the problem when we all raise concerns about undressing next to him? Why does he not need help to make HIM comfortable in the men’s room? Why does he not care about OUR feelings?

Also, the “this isn’t really happening” and “it’s only a few athletes” doesn’t work anymore. If you wanna talk numbers, Lia Thomas (one singular male athlete) affected HUNDREDS of girls. To all the Ivy League swimmers, to everyone at NCAAs, and every girl at every facility we traveled to. There were even girls age group swimmers as young as 4-5 that changed with us on our training trip. One male athlete is one too many.

Women's rights include the right to single-sex sporting competitions and the right to single-sex changing rooms. Gaines is genuine about that, and so is the Republican Party.

There is more to women's rights than abortion access.

What's truly appalling is that there isn't a political party in the US that supports the entire gamut of women's rights.

Single sex spaces are CENTRAL to womens rights. It's actually literally the lynchpin. If women don't have spaces where they are safe and comfortable when attending to their intimate (and vulnerable) needs in public, that means they withdraw from participation from society. Many women already by their own admission are self-excluding from teams, from places.

'Womens rights' means absolutely nothing if women self-exclude from society.
