Has banned women and girls over the age of 12 from participating. Thoughts?

You'll need to give us more information, like a link.

toadinthebucket · 12/10/2025 08:15

Fucking disgraceful. Their website makes it look all inclusive. "Open to runners of all ages and abilities". As long as you're not a woman or girl.
over 16 apparently.

Straight from the horses mouth. Click on and scroll down. Or just search Muslim Charity Run.

It actually says 12 as OP said.

I can understand if it’s a ‘men’s run for mental health’ or some such, or pink ladies for breast cancer, but to ban them on a religious pretext is totally different and not something I ever thought Britain in 2025 would be tolerating

RedToothBrush · 12/10/2025 08:17

How does this not fall foul of the Equality Act?

Tontostitis · 12/10/2025 08:18

So 12 year olds are women in their eyes. That's grimm

ViaRia01 · 12/10/2025 08:18

It’s a men’s race. I don’t find that disgraceful.

is there some controversy or issue that I have missed?

ACynicalDad · 12/10/2025 08:19

Thought about complaining to the park owners, it’s Tower Hamlets Council so no point. So wrong.

ThatSpryShaker · 12/10/2025 08:21

Are Muslim women allowed to take part in running competitions generally?

Bigpinksweater · 12/10/2025 08:21

RedToothBrush · 12/10/2025 08:17

I think it does as there’s no reason women shouldn’t be able to take part. The ‘reason’ seems to be a religious apartheid which they are declining to specifically confirm because they know how it will sound. Like I said if it had been a run for (eg) prostrate cancer, or men’s mental health, I wouldn’t see the issue.

It's not a men's race though.

You have teenage girls being treated unfavorably compared to teenage boys.

That's sexism. They have been deliberately excluded.

highame · 12/10/2025 08:21

It seems true, so it's another major step back. However, judging our staying power on trans rights vs women's rights, I think we'll do pretty well on this one.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 12/10/2025 08:22

There's some definite fudging going on

at the start of the blurb it says bringing together people of all ages but later it says

"This is open to men, boys of all ages and girls under 12, but everyone is welcome at the park to cheer on the runners. Compete with your friends, and see who can achieve the quickest time. Get active, keep fit, fundraise for a charity of your choice, and enjoy the day with family and friends"

i think it would be an interesting one for the EHRC!

No, it’s not.
Supposedly,
It’s East London’s unique celebration of health, unity, and compassion.

Family friendly too apparently …. pfffftt

Under 12, so not even sure if 12 year olds can run

'everyone' meaning women over 12 is welcome to cheer on the runners.

Did you really just ask that question?

Bigpinksweater · 12/10/2025 08:22

Dare I ask, why 12 specifically?

Well it’s not is it, because an 11yo girl can enter.

They’re not holding another one for women on a different weekend….

ThatSpryShaker · 12/10/2025 08:23

RedToothBrush · 12/10/2025 08:22

Did you really just ask that question?

Yes. Because I see no issue with women not being in one race if they can do parkrun every weekend.

Bigpinksweater · 12/10/2025 08:22

Puberty?

Supporterofwomensrights · 12/10/2025 08:25

I think this must be illegal.
