But the reason why women and girls over 12 are excluded from the Fun Run is because of Islam.
So of course we will discuss attitudes to women and girls within Islam.
Being a 'feminist Muslim' is an oxymoron.
Islamic law states that the weight of a woman's testimony is half that of a man. And a daughter inherits only half of what a son is entitled to. Men can have four wives. A woman can have only one husband.
A man can marry a Jewish/Christian woman, because as the Head of the Household all children will be raised Muslim. A woman can only marry a Muslim man. So a Jewish/Christian man would have to convert to Islam to marry a Muslim woman to ensure the children are raised as Muslim. As the man makes all important decisions.
It is possible to be a liberal Muslim. Where she chooses to obey the laws and customs in the UK, such as having a civil as well as a religious marriage, freely choosing her (wholly unrelated) husband, and making close friends of people outside of her immediate family and the local Muslim community. She may even refuse to cover her head outside of a Mosque!
But being a 'feminist' Muslim is like being a vegan who regularly buys food at McDonalds. She may only eat the fries and veggie burger, but if she looks around, what does she see and hear?
How would she square her beliefs on women's equality with men, with only women having to cover their faces and the exclusion of all women and girls from the main beautiful prayer hall of a mosque. Typically females and young children are relegated to small shabby back rooms.
The cognitive dissonance must be very unpleasant.
