The Bluestocking: where conversation should supersede cards

The Blue Stockings Society was founded by women emphasising education and mutual cooperation. Men could attend as invited guests, but in this Women's Pub, they are only welcome to peer enviously through the windows.

All women welcome!

All tastes catered for.

All food containing calories will not increase waistlines.

All drink containing alcohol will not intoxicate beyond the mildy merry and slightly inhibited stage. Guaranteed no hangovers.

Don't mind the gerbils, hamster, capybaras, quokkas and other assorted rodents. They're all female, all staff and very accommodating...

Cheese GIF

Oh no! You need proper cheese.

OP posts:
DeanElderberry · 11/02/2025 12:09

yup

I do have some - indeed, intend a western omelette for lunch that will include some, but what to with that other terrible stuff? Maybe it would be okay in a pasta & peas type thing? Or the underlayer of courgette gratin, if I put something more properly cheesy on top.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/02/2025 12:09

We do get reduced fat cheddar slices (waitrose, mind) so we've got something to quickly bung in a sandwich when we go out for a walk - I've got rather high cholesterol so I find it a reasonable compromise. Obviously cheese to be eaten with biscuits or as part of a meal at home needs to be proper cheese.

I can't think of anything else we can keep for quick sandwiches that's got some protein but not high fat... trying to avoid ham (nitrites), don't like tuna... there must be something?

ErrolTheDragon · 11/02/2025 12:13

Sorry you're still laid up, Myrtle, glad you have a good walrus.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 11/02/2025 12:13

What a lovely, helpful Walrus he is, @MyrtleLion - but I'm sorry to hear you are still not feeling well. I hope you feel better soon.

I have not tried reduced fat cheese - and I won't now @DeanElderberry has warned against it. I do love cheese!

Chersfrozenface · 11/02/2025 12:16

@MyrtleLion get well soon but don't overdo things, not while you have a kind and helpful walrus to hand.

MyrtleLion · 11/02/2025 12:17

We use lacto-free cheese in a mix with cauliflower to simulate mash on a cottage pie. I'm dairy intolerant. Lacto-free is like processed cheese, quite rubbery and smooth but works in this setting.

Or you could just make cauliflower cheese with it.

I'm trying to keep up with the Sandie Peggie threads but it's impossible. Five hour time difference means I don't wake up until lunchtime your time.

Egg? With a smidge of salad cream if a proper serving of mayonnaise would have too much fat in it for you.

Boiledbeetle · 11/02/2025 16:01

Oh AI you arse. I give up.

HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT

How hard is it really!

So apparently according to the man who spent many hours operating on my insides in August he really doesn't want to operate again (may have to) because of the hostile environment with regards to my insides.

I now have visions of snarling teeth trying to bite surgeons hand off!

Hm, I suppose I could do a quick scramble (cant be doing with waiting to hard boil one egg and shell it when we're wanting to go out). I tend not to think of eggs as much as I should because DH is hypersensitive to their freshness ... I should remind him to buy them for me. I like one poached in beans or a tomatoey soup.

How many fingers am I holding up?

lcakethereforeIam · 11/02/2025 16:46

Love fat cheese is awful stuff to come across unexpectedly. Particularly if you tried to grill it before you realise.

Hope all the poorly people are or will soon be feeling well.

The Telegraph have got an article on how to stop procrastinating. I hope I get round to reading it.

DeanElderberry · 11/02/2025 16:52

I'd put it on top of home-made burgers I was cooking in the air-fryer. Just not right. Still quite tasty but needed real cheese for proper flexible but crisp gooeyness. Oh well, next time. Today will be flat mushrooms full of scrambled egg.

lcakethereforeIam · 11/02/2025 17:11

'Love fat cheese'!? Wtf is that?

Vis à vis the snarling teeth, I'm put in mind of the myth of vagina dentata!

ErrolTheDragon · 11/02/2025 17:43

Mine too, but I couldn't think of the term and didn't want to describe it.

Boiledbeetle · 11/02/2025 17:56

Thank you!!!

Although I do feel like I'm channelling Elon Musk in that picture

Magpiecomplex · 11/02/2025 17:57

It's not the most flattering picture of you, I must admit!

Aww Boily, you look sad, hope a troupe of dancing gerbils comes along soon to put on a show to take your mind of things...
