The Bluestocking: where conversation should supersede cards

The Blue Stockings Society was founded by women emphasising education and mutual cooperation. Men could attend as invited guests, but in this Women's Pub, they are only welcome to peer enviously through the windows.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Stockings_Society

All women welcome!

All tastes catered for.

All food containing calories will not increase waistlines.

All drink containing alcohol will not intoxicate beyond the mildy merry and slightly inhibited stage. Guaranteed no hangovers.

Don't mind the gerbils, hamster, capybaras, quokkas and other assorted rodents. They're all female, all staff and very accommodating...

I'm sure your Walrus would never do anything like that, Myrtle, because I assume you have him well trained - like thisGrin

Where did you get that???

That's a private tape made for my own use! and my side-hustle training walruses which is very lucrative thanks for asking.

I can also see a pen on top of it! I really hope no one has been annotating the poems, especially not in biro!

Why not? I'm sure any marginala would be positive!

Magpiecomplex · 10/02/2025 17:43

I've never been able to bring myself to write in books, it's just all kinds of wrong!

I do, in pencil, I make a short note of the topic that's covered on that page, if it's something I want to be able to find again.

I used to be against writing in books, but for some reason I started thinking of them as tools not shrines... gosh that sounds pompous!

I want to be able to find quotes quickly. 98% of what I read is non-fiction, so I often want to go back to check something.

Only pencil, though.

At some point after the first book came out I had reason to meet up with a very funny Scottish Terf.

Oh my god! The state of her copy of UTDOD. I was having palpitations! So many post it notes with scrawled notes on, I couldn't bring myself to look if she'd actually written in it. That would have finished me off!

Someone said JKR was transphobic on the 50 books challenge thread. I asked them to show me exactly how and then I came under attack!!!
Apparently it's not the place to have that discussion. Well I didn't start it!

I found you over there Myrtle.

You were attacked! I think the person who called JKR transphobic is much loved on there, I've seen some of the other names on the FWR board before so I don't think that everyone on there agrees.

Thank you so much xx

I hadn't realised they were popular. I just thought it was unnecessary to say that about JKR . I thought it was deliberately provocative.

It definitely was provocative.

If I'd known the user was popular, I'd have posted something like, "now, now, let's keep to why we like books and keep controversy out of the thread". I feel like I walked into a trap.

Don't sweat it. If I'd have seen it first so would I.

The way they all jumped on you and not her was intriguing though, felt a bit cliquey tbh.

I have these issues with some groups of women in personal contact so I am upset to meet it here because MN had been so welcoming, particularly here at the Bluestocking.

Ah hugs to you Myrtle, it's school playground behaviour. Not worth worrying over (although I know it's easy to say).

MyrtleLion · 10/02/2025 21:14

I've been struck in bed all day with a virus and I'm too dizzy to get up. DH has fed me but he's been working all day so I've just had MN and an audio book for company.

Aw bless you Myrtle. I do hope you feel better very soon and although I didn't see the thread to which you refer, take as little notice as you can.
Safety, chocolate and a cuddly quokka all reside in the Bluestocking for you.

Please don't eat the quokka.

Quokkas aren't natural lion food, so it's safe with me.

I hope you feel better soon @MyrtleLion .

I seem to have been hunched over a hot computer all day - I've developed a sideline in editing dissertations for students of psychotherapy (my daughter is a psychotherapist and sometimes refers her supervisees to me for editorial rather than content help with their dissertations). Fascinating work but you don't move around much!

I'm also trying to get our tax info together because DH is fairly hopeless over such matters and somebody has to feed the accountant with accurate information.

FuzzyPuffling · 11/02/2025 07:12

Today I am off to get my new glasses with a hugely reduced prescription. My lovely surgeon has managed to make a BIG reduction in my astigmatism, even though that wasn't necessarily part of the deal!

The end is in sight. Literally.
Woo hoo!!

MyrtleLion · 11/02/2025 11:42

I am still in bed. DH is demonstrating once again that walruses make the perfect husbands.

Such a kind walrus. I hope you feel better soon.

A warning.

My car is poorly and yesterday I did a hasty top-up shop in case I was left without transport (may yet happen). And I made a terrible mistake,

Never, ever, ever buy 'reduced fat cheese'.

hollow mockery. sham.
