The Bluestocking: where conversation should supersede cards

The Blue Stockings Society was founded by women emphasising education and mutual cooperation. Men could attend as invited guests, but in this Women's Pub, they are only welcome to peer enviously through the windows.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Stockings_Society

All women welcome!

All tastes catered for.

All food containing calories will not increase waistlines.

All drink containing alcohol will not intoxicate beyond the mildy merry and slightly inhibited stage. Guaranteed no hangovers.

Don't mind the gerbils, hamster, capybaras, quokkas and other assorted rodents. They're all female, all staff and very accommodating...

That was quick! Or are these temporary gerbils while our have sometime off?

That's Gobnait, Gormlaith and Grizel, they nipped on ahead of the rest of us.

Which caused massive confusion because they didn't leave a note.

DeanElderberry · 29/01/2025 21:11

massive confusion to me, evidently Beetle knew and didn't tell me.

Don't wish to offend... Have you left your bath cap on?

It's a mob cap. Perhaps it helps her deal with mobs?Confused

It is indeed a mob cap. Worn informally by women indoors. By quoting the 18th century Society I seem to have adopted their style of dress. Thought I'd better tone down the majesty of the previous place.

If I hadn't been knocking about these threads from the off, I would think the world had gone totally bonkers. In a nice way.
Who doesn't love a warm, welcoming pub with small furry animals?

FuzzyPuffling · 29/01/2025 21:13

A mob cap would be fab on a bad hair day. Bring them back, I say.

I once had my head very badly burned by a hairdresser and wore a silk cap for weeks.

Is the pantechnicon with all the craft stuff on the way?

Not that I have the patience at the moment, frankly. But just in case I fancied a little light 'n' easy knitting at some point.

DeanElderberry · 29/01/2025 21:17

Medium sized furry animals with algae growing on the dung that is trapped in the grooves on its hairs. And moths.

Are sure that wasn't really a blue stocking emerging into AI-powered sentience, easily suppressed by a competent scientist? Or unravelled by a knitter, competent or otherwise.

DeanElderberry · 29/01/2025 21:19

If I unravel the blue sock (NOT a sloth) I can then give Cher a nice ball of wool for her knitting.

lifeturnsonadime · 29/01/2025 21:19

Right for a change I've seen this before there are 70 million posts. Mines a Merlot please, large.

I don't have any rodents but I can bring a large retriever and a small terrier who we nickname 'fatty ratty', will that do?

Magpiecomplex · 29/01/2025 21:23

DeanElderberry · 29/01/2025 21:06

oh

https://animalhype.com/mammals/does-algae-grow-on-sloths/

maybe Sweet Slothy shouldn't sit on the table. It's not the algae as much the moths and the - - - dung.

Sloth moths? Gosh! Every day is a school day!
I'm never entirely sure whether sloth is pronounced to rhyme with moth, or to rhyme with both. I feel like the former works better when talking about the lepidopterans which live with them.

Sorry, but blame the pigs! The bloody micro pigs would not stop running around like giggly toddlers high on Skittles! I got all discombobulated. I've even had to go back and make sure I'd locked up. Good job I did. I'd forgotten to put the sign on the door! Plus I found a missing gerbil trying to push a trolley full of bottles having missed the bus!

a large retriever and a fatty ratty sounds like just what we need.

See, I thought the same thing, but I was assured that it's a sloth.

Chersfrozenface · 29/01/2025 21:25

Ta very much. Hobbycraft do a pattern. I already have some grey and cream coloured yarn for the features. I'm fairly sure said yarn is in a bag behind the sofa.

I think (HOPE) they may have been making understandable but incorrect assumptions.

Magpiecomplex · 29/01/2025 21:28

Well, I'm a competent scientist, and a very incompetent knitter (although competent at crochet) so sentient blue stockings hold no fear for me.

Oooh Cher do it in blue please? I'm sure our sloth is very clean and tidy. And possibly crocheted.
Nothing like that weird green one.

Would you like this glass? Or a fresh one?

Go for a fresh one (I suspect Gladys has helped herself to a few mouthfuls the move always stresses her!)

I've rustled something up, but the terrier only appears if you're serving the drinks yourself. I'm sorry, it's just while we settle in, but the new waistcoats are adorable!

Can someone pop down to the funfair and check on the gerbils? I'd hate to think they'd fallen into the candyfloss machine.

Oh my god that IS my retriever!

The fat rat is fatter and darker! but good job!

The Merlot is perfection!

Yes fresh one please. I wouldn't want to put Gladys out. Not when she's wearing her best hat.
