Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

The “women’s march” that’s all about the men.

BackToLurk · 11/12/2024 13:24

I couldn’t see a thread about this, but I’m just here to share how annoying it is to see a so-called women’s march so concerned with placating men. This is the march in January.

As well as the highly predictable “this is for all women” (meaning including the ones who are men) and the ‘we don’t tolerate transphobia’ (meaning any concept of sex-based oppression), the Facebook group is full of posts reassuring men that of course they’re welcome and it’s not all men and obviously “not my Nigel”. It’s infuriating. Why do people do this?

Yes, Glom. Monroe Bergdorf whanging on about how pussy hats were excluding him because some women have cocks is what brought me here.

Yes, women shouldn't "centre their reproductive systems at the heart of these demonstrations"

Spoof title

Not a spoof title, amazingly

Holy fuck, Eresh. I hadnt seen the Grazia article. Astonishing.

INeedAPensieve · 06/01/2025 20:21

Why exactly did my message to @TigerLily40 on page 23 get deleted Mumsnet? All I said was for her to ignore having to justify herself, we've all seen the screenshots at the beginning of this thread that talk about 'belting terfs'. Hostility towards women at its best. Was it because I mentioned that bloke who shouted abuse at FGM survivors and sexual assault survivors in Glasgow last year (who has been invited to this march)? Or was it because a particular poster was upset that I sent a message of solidarity to tigerlily?

I did not call anyone names, in fact I didn't name or "at" anyone to pull them into my comment. I don't think I broke any guidelines. I'm actually quite annoyed my comment got deleted. The only conclusion I can draw that it was reported for petty reasons by someone on this thread. 🙄

I know, quite something isn't it! I remember it came out the same day as a WPUK meeting and there were a lot of Mumsnetters who had met up before the event almost speechless at Bergdorf's nerve.

"A woman is more than a vagina, than her ability to bear children, the gender she was assigned at birth, a socio-economic class, marital status or sexual history – yet every one of these points has been used to define and control a woman’s place in society. This is why feminism must serve as an inclusive tool of liberation for all female identities and experiences, not just some. This is where so many women are still getting it wrong."

Monroe, you are so right, I have been getting it wrong all these years. Thanks for enlightening me.

"These women do not see me as a ‘real woman’"

Wonder why that could be.

"In the same vein, we need to see more women who identify as straight standing up for lesbians."

It's news to me that women can "identify" as straight. I thought they just were, or weren't.

AstonScrapingsNameChange · 07/01/2025 12:28

I might be missing something bleeding obvious, but how, precisely, are the organisers going to ensure a safe female woman only space for traumatised female women?

Because they themselves think that TWAW.

Unless it's going to be 'men and trans man free', but contain trans women? 🤦‍♀️

Make it make sense!

ArabellaScott · 07/01/2025 12:49

No, they are VERY enthusiastic about male supporters or 'allies', who are lauded and essential.

Women who dare to ask for a section of march that is male-free, for say, rape survivors with PTSD, get the boot. Terfs get 'belted'.

Oh I see. I thought I read on the screenshot upthread that they'd made a concession to traumatised women by having a man free section?

(Which of course isn't going to be a magnet for arseholes is it? )

ArabellaScott · 07/01/2025 12:59

Maybe. Last time I looked they were smartly banning any woman that asked about it.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 07/01/2025 13:06

Unless it's going to be 'men and trans man free', but contain trans women?

That's what I assumed. And probably male non binaries too.

ArabellaScott · 07/01/2025 13:33

A 'section' that is male free really is going to be curious. How big are these marches going to be? How are they going to manage different sections? What if wrongthinking horrible women turn up and think bad thoughts during them?

ArabellaScott · 07/01/2025 13:36

The Manchester page is boasting that the group has 18,000 members. Their crowdfunder has been up for three days with a £2,5k target.

It's raised £29. From three supporters.

The London march, meanwhile, is doing better. £537 raised from 24 supporters.

ArabellaScott · 07/01/2025 13:41

Nottingham is on £35.

I actually think the biggest problem with these marches might be the social media aspect of it.

They've got a hugely over inflated idea of how many women will attend, they've been too trigger happy banning and insulting women on social media, and they've created their own wee echo chamber so they have little idea of how well it's going, or not.

PonyPatter44 · 07/01/2025 14:15

I completely agree, @ArabellaScott. They are so terrified at the thought of having to justify themselves to TERF-y women that they've stopped publicising it at all.

Snowypeaks · 07/01/2025 14:24

They've got themselves into a philosophical tangle here.

The way I see it, they have two legitimate choices : They could put on a Women's March, at which all women are welcome, including women who claim a trans identity, but no male people, whether they claim to be women or not.. That would be trans inclusive and male-exclusive.
Or they could put on a march in support of women, which anyone could march at. But whichever they chose they should centre women, not exclude them.

Snowypeaks · 07/01/2025 14:26

And as for claiming that women's oppression is not biology-based...words fail me.

Even in the case of the right to choose an abortion, which is the only women's right some of these campaigners seem to care about.
How can they bear to look and sound so stupid?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 07/01/2025 14:38

I think maybe if they put one on in London, they'll declare it a massive success, especially if they get publicity on social media and in the media.

They're unlikely to get coverage for London given that it's the same day and time as a massive national 'pro-Palestinian ' march

Thanks @BackToLurk - good to know.

ArabellaScott · 07/01/2025 17:31

Maybe they can join forces with the piss protest people, and the trans activists can bring along a few 'decapitate terf' signs and some 'kill JK' ones, seeing as theyv'e got them all made and ready to go already. The antifa lot are usually up for a bit of flags and shouting, if it means they get to scare women.

ArabellaScott · 07/01/2025 17:32

The 'trans kids' can bring some live crickets and a few wee paper coffins. And I'm sure they can find some nonbinary to glue theyselves to something.

ArabellaScott · 07/01/2025 17:33

The BBC will supply some drag queens and that odd Cabaret chap can do a My Little Brony striptease. Sorted!
