The original premises are getting crowded, we need to expand.

Welcome all women, and well behaved animals.

I've given up on the less/fewer thing, except in my own speech of course.
There isn't a significant/signifying difference between the two words I mean 'less milk, fewer lumps of sugar' just means less milk and less sugar.
It has become so rare in so many levels of speech that the absence of 'fewer' makes me wince less wincingly these days.

It's not like 'disinterested' and 'uninterested' which I'll never give up on as they mean two distinct things. Duh.😠

I realise I may find myself barred* from Pedantry Corner for this, but I'm not afraid to stand up for my principles and as I'm thrown out the door you will hear the immortal rallying cry of 'Remember the Bluestocking Hortserasishi!' from my pale lips. You'll also hear lots of clunking as my suit of armour hits the pavement.

*William Shakespeare walks into the Bluestocking, the barwoman says: 'You're Bard!' [old joke]
Shakespeare opens case of cheap cosmetics and says
'Yes but I'm the Bard of Avon' [brand new, just thought of itGrin]

All done - the nurse was very quick, and I have had my breakfast now. I don't usually eat breakfast - I used to be on Citalopram, which I took in the mornings, and which made me queasy, so I got out of the habit of breakfast, and just have coffee now - but I felt I deserved it this morning. I would have tried to talk dh into a McDonalds pancake and sausage breakfast, but he had to get back home and start work.

JulySheWillFlyAndGiveNoWarningToHerFlight · 18/09/2024 10:36

Well done, @SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius on getting through the blood test without incident.

Did you have virtuous Shreddies for your breakfast after all? Whether or not, please enjoy one of the delicious chocolate items the Bluestocking has to offer. I understand they have no short or long term effect on people’s blood sugar levels.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 18/09/2024 10:58

I had equally virtuous Shredded Wheat, but the offer of Bluestocking chocolate items that don't spike blood sugar is very welcome indeed. Yum yum.

I assume that the Bluestocking has also taken the calories out of all Tunnocks products, without changing the taste. Could the same happen with Maltesers, please and thank you!

No calories, not a single one, in anything consumed within this pub

And the range of sweets is impressive so I'm sure there will be Maltesers in a box somewhere

Got any old English spangles?

AlisonDonut · 18/09/2024 11:45

Gosh, I've not been here much, had the stepdaughter visiting for 3 weeks ish.

Now, anyway, so, right.

Fuck it. I need a quiet nap in the corner. I've got friends round later to discuss doing Raku in my garden and I've only got crisps in!

Someone kick me at 3:45 will you? Well, 2:45 UK time.

<makes pillow with someones coat from the lost property box>

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 18/09/2024 12:00

You are going to do Raku, @AlisonDonut? I am filled with awe and a bit of jealousy.

I have a Raku glazed otter that I bought as a Christmas present for my mum, a few years ago - she used to do pottery, and we used to enjoy discussing the Pottery Throwdown, especially the Raku episode each season, so I knew she'd like it. When she died, it was one of the things I wanted to have, to remember her by, and it's on my front room window ledge where I can see it every day.

I've also got an embroidery I did for her - Dutch tiles in blackwork embroidery with irises in the middle - she was a mad keen iris grower, and even won medals for the irises she bred. That was another Christmas present - she liked it, but said I had used the wrong yellow for the little bits on the petals, with the pollen on - so did I mind if she unpicked it and did it in the right colour!!

This was before her cataract surgery, and I went cold at the thought of her and a pair of very sharp scissors, holding the embroidery right up to her nose in an effort to see what she was cutting. Luckily my sister talked her out of it, and whisked the piece off to the framers.

Pub names don't necessarily accurately describe the people who frequent them, of course. Grin

That's true. I've just googled pub names that feature "woman" or "women". I came across several articles about pubs called The Quiet Woman where the pub sign features a decapitated woman. One in Dorset pictures the head under the arm, another in Derbyshire is simply headless. I was hoping to find a pub called the Big Women. I imagine it filled with very small women, and perhaps one larger woman sitting elegantly at the end of the bar with a huge piece of chocolate cake next to her pint of Guinness.

AlisonDonut · 18/09/2024 13:02

Yes we decided to go for it as we all want to have a go!

We will do it near the well pump just in case.

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius i've been reading the cataract posts with great interest, as I had cataract surgery quite recently. After having the surgery I noticed that I couldn't see colours properly with my un-operated eye. Colours seen through the lens + cataract, have a greenish or greyish cast. The yellow in your embroidery was probably the perfect colour but your mother couldn't perceive it through her cataracts. Thank goodness for your sister getting it framed!

Boily, does upur pick n mix include those square caramel sweeks with pink or white icing round them? Made by Clarnico, I believe. Bloody love them.

They may not be quite the same but I'm sure they will taste EXACTLY the same as the ones from Clarnico.

Had to Google Raku. V pretty!

And not at all linked to Ryu, which is what I thought you were talking about.... 🫣

Chersfrozenface · 18/09/2024 16:55

Feeling a bit grim. The year is really not getting any better. Had some more horribly bad news about a friend and her family.

So may I have something very alcoholic indeed, please and thank you.

lcakethereforeIam · 18/09/2024 16:57

I thought it was some sort of woo. I think I got it mixed up with reiki.

Beetle have you got any peanut butter sweeties?

Edited to add

I'm so sorry Gin. Bad events/news does seem to cluster. Sometimes makes me think perhaps there is a God and he's a bit of a sadist.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 18/09/2024 16:59

@Chersfrozenface - I’m sorry to hear that - here is an exceedingly large drink and plenty of chocolate to go with it.

EdithStourton · 18/09/2024 17:11

@Chersfrozenface some years are just like that. We had one a few years ago, funerals, illness, etc. I'm sorry you're having one now.

Aside from whatever alcohol you're necking, I can recommend the Bluestocking's cheese straws.

FuzzyPuffling · 18/09/2024 17:13

@Chersfrozenface I'm so.sorry you're going through such tough times.

Have one ( or several) of Boily's fabulous caramels.

And feel the Bluestocking love.

Certainly.

Apologies if you get the one that appears to have part of one of my legs incorporated into it.

We did too. Ours was 2015. So sorry to hear this is yours, @Chersfrozenface. All I can say is, it stops eventually & things return to normal. That, & Cheers!
