Stewart Lee (a comedian apparently) calling MN a "hate site"

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 28/04/2024 12:27

Is there a backstory here or is he spouting random nonsense? Would MNHQ be interested in his defaming their site, also some ageism and condescension.

Relevant passage towards the end (after a hot take on Gideon Falter 🙄) :

"It was with some relief I finally had my now retired Basic Lee show filmed in Salford last week by Sky. The definitive record of this much-discussed, but comparatively rarely seen, show should diffuse the ongoing online storm in a teacup reflecting its imagined content, which has already resulted in the location of my family home being posted on the guest book of the schools advice, recipes and hate site Mumsnet by a furious old lady."

Context is vital. That’s why I’m filming everything I say and do from now on | Stewart Lee

As Gideon Falter’s standoff with the police demonstrates, it’s important to be able to see the bigger picture

Both. He's a spoken word Billy Bragg.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 28/04/2024 12:35

I used to to find him funny. But these days he just sounds like a bitter, ranty man who likes the sound of his own voice far too much.

Wherewerewerewear · 28/04/2024 12:37

Surely this guy is totally irrelevant to anyone but his own family. I’d forgotten he existed.

theDudesmummy · 28/04/2024 12:40

Never heard of him (thankfully, it seems, for both him and me, given that I am perfectly happy to identify as a furious old lady). This is a load of old smug wank, but also defamatory. Will MN do something about that?

Waitwhat23 · 28/04/2024 12:41

I've no idea what he's on about re: the address but find the language he uses instructive as to how he views women and how he views a site like Mumsnet.

He appears to think so much of his own opinions that he produced a shit list of the people he doesn't like a couple of years ago and made it public. As he is 'an ally', you can probably imagine.

Bit of a try hard really.

Prawncow · 28/04/2024 12:42

Someone posted his home address? That’s awful and shouldn’t happen to anyone, regardless of their politics.

nauticant · 28/04/2024 12:43

But did it happen?

YoghurtPotWashingMachine · 28/04/2024 12:44

Was going through say the same. Is it true someone posted his address? Not on.

AirGappedServerScrapings · 28/04/2024 12:44

I'm really surprised any one cares that much about Stewart Lee either to bother to find out where he lives, or to then post the address. Also because who would care?

MILTOBE · 28/04/2024 12:44

I don't believe his address was posted on here; if it was it wouldn't have been by any regular user. He's irrelevant to 99.99% of women here and unheard of by the rest.

nauticant · 28/04/2024 12:46

What I'd imagine did happen is that for some reason someone mentioned that he has a big nice house in a nice area facing a particular park.

Cattenberg · 28/04/2024 12:47

“…which has already resulted in the location of my family home being posted on the guest book of the schools advice, recipes and hate site Mumsnet by a furious old lady."

So much misogyny in this little mention. How would he know how old a particular poster was? He’s using “old lady” as a pejorative. It’s also really common for people who dislike Mumsnet to dismiss it as a place where woman only talk about mundane things, except when they’ve inexplicably got their knickers in a twist over something.

If you are only going to choose “three things” to try to sum up Mumsnet, you could just as easily choose feminism, current affairs and moral dilemmas. Or relationships, travel and fashion. Or films, education and health.

But it would be more accurate to say that Mumsnet is a site where as many as eight million women talk to each other about pretty much everything. And some men really hate that.

LunaNorth · 28/04/2024 12:48

Stewart Lee? His wife left him, didn’t she?

I liked her series. About an angry middle aged woman getting sick of her husband’s shit and roaring off on a motorbike to live in the New Forest.

Wonder where she got the idea for that?

Karensalright · 28/04/2024 12:48

Used to like him back in the day went to see him live a couple of years ago, had a jibe about JKR, not well received by the audience. His material barely raised a titter.

Tosspot as far as i am concerned.

A few folk got up and left before he finished his set, including my group.

WickedSerious · 28/04/2024 12:50

Fuck he's boring.

Waitwhat23 · 28/04/2024 12:52

And before we get any fly by posters, I will state unequivocally that I condemn utterly anyone who maliciously posts people's private addresses online, including on this site.

I wonder whether he made a similar statement when JKR's address was made public by 'allies' and they took a photo outside her house.

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he did so.

WagnersFourthSymphony · 28/04/2024 12:53

He's in The Observer, isn't he. I read The Observer but I never read his column.

And no, no one should have published his address. Would be amazed if it happened here.

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 28/04/2024 12:53

@Cattenberg yes he packs a lot of well, hate into that sentence.

He really was defamatory towards MN. Also, surely if his address was posted it would have been deleted by the mods, agree with PPs it was probably "a leafy bit of London" or whatever.

I love Stewart Lee. Even if I didn't, it's fucking awful when (not if) this site is used for shit like doxxing and harassment. The lawyer for the firm opposing Maya Forstater's case got significant harassment which she certainly thought was orchestrated via Mumsnet. It's a big site and there are people visiting it I would no doubt not want to be in a dark alley with. Righteousness is a dubious drug.

nauticant · 28/04/2024 12:56

Do you really think we should be taking Stewart Lee's word for a doxxing having happened when he's made clear he hates this website?

AlisonDonut · 28/04/2024 13:09

I haven't seen him getting doxxed, I guess if he was and it was deleted then he can say whatever he wants and if he was and it wasn't deleted, it is him bringing it to other people's attention.

Which is weird.

How would he know it was an old lady? How would he know she was furious? Is there a user called 'furious old lady'? So many questions.

RoyalCorgi · 28/04/2024 13:10

What does he mean by "guest book"? Is there a Mumsnet guest book that I've missed?

"Hate site" is defamatory, and I'm surprised the Observer legal team let it through.

HelenaWaiting · 28/04/2024 13:13

nauticant · 28/04/2024 12:56

Edited

I think he has been very careful not to say that his address was posted. He said "the location of my family home". That could mean posting "he lives in South-East England. It's a location; it's hardly doxxing.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 28/04/2024 13:20

I've never heard of him but he sounds like a knob.
I don't give a shit where he lives and I doubt any one else does either.
