Sara Morrison vs Belfast Film Festival

Employers seem to be slow learners when it comes to women's rights! There’s another employment tribunal case being brought by a woman who attended and took the microphone at a Let Women Speak event in Belfast last year and has been treated very badly by her employer Belfast Film Festival as a result.

Looks like we’re going to have to keep gardening until they get the message.

disclaimer. I don’t know Sara and have no connection to BFF I’m just a woman who likes donating to causes that make a difference

Okay I've had a chat with a couple of legal people and had a look at the rules and it looks like there is no rule that recusal hearings must be held in private. It also . looks like there would be no strong objection to the application hearing being made in public.

R's team heading towards the hearing room.

I'm afraid to ask what frogging is, as it may be like dogging but with French people.😁
Isn't frogging what they call the elaborate braiding on the front of a fancy military uniform?

Frogging is basically ripping out stitches that you have knit, to get back to the point where you made a mistake, so you can fix it. It comes from the sound a frog makes: “ribbit” being similar to the phrase “rip it”.

There were two refusals for the same reason in that case, and ISTR in the end the judge went ahead without a panel member.

Excuse my pedantry, but it's recusal (unless that was an autocorrect).

The judge and panel members are expected to remove themselves from cases where they have a conflict of interest - like knowing a witness or claimant, or being employed by one of the parties.

All Employment Tribunals are heard by a Judge (legally qualified) and two panel members. One is usually a trade union official (employed by a union) or lay representative (elected by fellow employees and very experienced in employment issues) and a representative from industry, frequently a senior HR manager or director. This means employees have someone who understands their position and employers also have someone who understands their position.

Hope this helps.

I’m now completely and simultaneously gripped by the case, knitting techniques, and matters etymological.

MyrtleLion · 14/11/2025 13:10

I'll pick it up Marie

That's such a lovely explanation for calling it frogging😄

All back in, about to kick off. Poss literally.

looks like there would be no strong objection to the application hearing being made in public.

The judge, does, however, have a right (apparently) to privately carpet the parties, which she is doing right now. But I've been told by a clerk the application hearing will not go ahead before I've had the opportunity to be heard. There is another journalist here who will join

... me in my representation, if necessary.

Tempted to start a new thread.

Let's start a new thread.

THIS IS VERY HIGH DRAMA!!!!

(Sorry, needed a shout!)

Such high drama we need a BIG EXPENSIVE SCREEN to showcase it fully

pronounsbundlebundle · 14/11/2025 13:15

I don't understand why the Judge is so angry. If it's a recusal, surely they're doing the right thing. It's not as if no-one was there for the Claimant.

Whatever it is it's clearly explosive.

Actually I've remembered my DM is calling me at 1.30pm to discuss the urgent family situation from a couple of days ago.

We arranged to speak during the lunch break but of course that went to pot.

I'll post when she calls. She has a meeting at 2pm, so I'll be back by then. I'd be grateful if someone could pick it up when she calls.

Hello and welcome to Day 5 of Morrison v BFF at Belfast Employment Tribunal. High drama - we're about to get a recusal application. Thread of live tweets follows.

This was what happened earlier today. V serious stuff.

(Posts link to previous tweets)

MyrtleLion · 14/11/2025 13:18

From NW

A recusal application means asking the judge, a panel member or the entire bench to stand down from the trial. The tribunal grinds to a halt and must be rescheduled with a new panel. No one knows the alleged grounds for recusal outside the legal teams. We're about to find out.
