Worrying Increase in Transphobia

https://www.thepinknews.com/2023/09/09/transphobia-uk-press-media-negative-coverage/

An increase in transphobic sentiment among the British public has been fuelled by hostile coverage of trans people from the right-wing press, argues data journalist Ell Folan....

Unfortunately, newspapers still have a great deal of influence on the public and political agenda in Britain, and nowhere is this more obvious than in how perceptions of trans rights have changed.

As recently as Feburary 2021, an absolute majority of British voters (51 per cent) agreed with the statement “a transgender woman is a woman”, including 6 in 10 women. Just 34 per cent disagreed. But after years of negative coverage from the press, those numbers have changed.

In April this year, only 33 per cent of voters agreed that trans women are women, with 47 per cent disagreeing....

It is clear that the media plays an important role in shaping public perceptions, and unless their negative coverage is corrected and refuted, public opinion will continue to worsen.

Transphobia is on the rise – and the press is to blame

An increase in public anti-trans sentiment has been fuelled by hostile coverage of trans issues by right-wing newspapers, argues Ell Folan.

If you have a penis created, would you still call that person a woman? Or would you at least describe them as a transman? A lot of discussions on here talk about the dangers of having a penis, so surely you wouldn’t still call this person a woman?

You are talking about the sex of a person.

Humans are categorised by their reproductive potential. It really is simple.

A female human is one that has a body formed around the production of large gametes, regardless of whether that body produces those large gametes at any stage of their life.

No human on earth has ever produced both sperm and ova. A human with a difference in sex development does not disprove the binary nature of the human sex categorisation.

Neither surgical or hormonal changes to a body mean that any human on this planet has 'changed sex'. They merely become a person who has made extreme modifications to their bodies while remaining the sex they were at conception.

Is the way round doing that (ie avoiding @), to quote the post instead?

That’s mainly what I’ve been doing but with no clue as to whether that breaches etiquette.

I guess so!

I didn't mean to create a big Etiquette Situation - I'm sure it's fine to occasionally @ a person, it's just when someone is repeatedly @ ing people while also insulting them and haranging them for responding to conversations/questions, it comes across as quite rude.

I’m quite surprised considering all the talk of not wanting a penis in a woman’s bathroom, but fair enough.

But it isn't a penis. It's only ever a facsimile

Likeafurchin · 12/09/2023 16:42

It will lead to self exclusion in sporting facilities and healthcare settings particularly. That has major ramifications

It already is. A tw has demanded access to women's changing rooms in an athletics club near me and lots of the women are just not using them anymore. This person really has no reason to fear the men's changing rooms- and was using them with no problem a short while ago.

@Helleofabore I also personally find it a bit offensive. You know full well that people who believe they are in the wrong bodies are suicidal. At least explain them as trans people, not as those who have basically destroyed their bodies. Very different to discussing certain rights and privileges.

Please stop spreading misinformation on this board.

No person on this planet has been 'born in the wrong body'.

lifeturnsonadime · 12/09/2023 16:45

I'm not frightened of a woman who's had her body modified to give her something that resembles a penis.

I feel really sorry for her. That's she's been let down in her mental health so badly to believe that extreme body modification is the answer to her mental health issues.

If she felt so suicidal that this has led to such extreme modifications then why hasn't her mental health been addressed with therapy? After all no-one will really see her as a man. Even the law will make sure that any male sibling born after her will still be the one to inherit.

All of this is just bloody awful and using women who have gone to extreme lengths due to poor mental health as a gotcha is pretty vile.

Fuck, that is not the gotcha that you really want to be throwing around there. It shows just how fucked up your thinking really is.

The many female trans people we have had post on this board have actually assured us that they know that their modified appearance due to testosterone can cause distress to other women and girls. So they find other solutions.

That YOU don't know this shows that you are not listening to these transitioned female people and you completely lack any empathy for women and girls. But carry on, you do you and show the world that you don't speak to female transitioners.

A roll of skin from a forearm stitched onto a pubic mound is not a penis.

I'm happy to call a woman who calls herself a transman a transman, of course. She is still female, of course, and will still need female healthcare, etc.

'The dangers of having a penis' - the risk is to do with the person's sex, socialisation, etc, not their body parts or lack thereof.

Although a penis does present the extra added risk of unwanted pregnancy, of course. A transman does not present this risk, whatever surgery said transman has had done.

I’m quite surprised considering all the talk of not wanting a penis in a woman’s bathroom, but fair enough.

The appendage which some post-surgery transmen have is not a penis. It is a piece of flesh usually constructed from arm or thigh skin which has been fashioned to look a bit like a penis. Lots of things look vaguely like a penis (sausages for example) but aren’t actually a penis.

But even if a surgeon is very skilled and creates something that looks a lot like a penis, it still isn’t a penis, any more than a realistic-looking dildo or strap-on is a penis.

Sorry for having to use the word penis so much in this post.

Froodwithatowel · 12/09/2023 16:50

Ididivfama · 12/09/2023 16:23

Well what do you call it when they have sex change surgery?

An inaccurate and misleading term.

ArabeIIaScott · 12/09/2023 16:51

The thread does seem to be getting rather sausage-heavy.

Sooner or later we always see women weaponised in this way.

"If you have a problem with TW in your bathroom we'll send in TM and then you'll be sorry"

Please don't use women to try and batter other women into compliance, TM are usually a whole lot more sensitive towards other women and do not exist as levers to wangle male people's agendas.

lechiffre55 · 12/09/2023 16:54

A crude fascimile of a penis that isnt a penis isn't a penis.

Don't drag Variations of Sexual Development into the trans argument!

Also, how fucking offensive are you leveraging suicide to convince people that males should have access to female single sex spaces.

Do you try this with any other group you are trying to convince, or is it shame, into complying with male people's demands?

Do you use emotional manipulation every time to try to shame people into agreeing with you when they don't agree with you?

We ARE discussing 'certain rights and privileges'. YOU are the person trying to convince people on this thread or reading this thread that people can 'change sex'.

Umm... no they fucking cannot change sex.

Your use of 'hermaphrodites' is outdated and now considered offensive. People with differences of sex development have asked to not be weaponised to prove a person's political point scoring exercise.

Please respect this and stop posting misinformation.

inamarina · 12/09/2023 15:47

what do we do with the women who can no longer use the women's space if either of these male people insist on being in there in pursuit of their own agenda and happiness?

I‘ve never seen a response to this question - on this thread or anywhere else.

I was told on here that I should "get over it"
It being years of sexual abuse and grooming as a teen by a male relative, leading to cPTSD. I really wish I'd managed to screenshot it before someone else reported it and it was deleted.

Someone I know IRL told me Muslims should stop being bigoted and that their religion didn't trump TWs right to exist
