£1 million prize offered for anyone who can provide a clear example of a transphobic J.K. Rowling quote

As the title says, a million pounds is being offered by Distance Magazine https://www.thedistancemag.com/p/we-will-award-steve-wardlaw-1-million?r=uglk&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

"To win the Steve Wardlaw Prize™, an entrant must demonstrate that the cited statement by J.K. Rowling does not involve a rights conflict. That is, the cited statement must materially detract from the human rights of ‘transgender people’ without simultaneously arguing for the rights of another group, such as women, children, or people with faith traditions."

They've named the prize after Steve Wardlaw who I've never heard of but his pinned tweet is an apology to Alison Bailey

We Will Award Steve Wardlaw £1 Million For The Elusive 'Anti-Trans' J.K. Rowling Quote

He has assured us that it exists

In the book, the serial killer didn’t cross dress. A police officer is trying to recall the events of decades ago and believed the suspect disguised himself in women’s clothing and a wig to avoid arousing suspicion. This line forms the entirety of this particular accusation:

Well I've read the book and couldn't remember a single reference to a cross dresser. Just re-skimmed it quickly (it is a brick!) and as far as I can see there is a reference to a detective looking at recalled witness evidence of two figures struggling in the rain outside a phone box. The witness said it was two women. But because the detective had a male suspect in mind, he assumed one of the taller women was actually a man. As it turns out the assumption was incorrect........ That is ALL I can find. Also watched the tv adaptation and zero mention of cross dresser as I recall. It just isn't there in any obvious way in Troubled Blood. Perhaps the poster above or anyone else can put me right though? Prepared to be proven wrong, but please point to a page reference. Not holding my breath!

JoodyBlue · 17/08/2023 12:43

@NotBadConsidering thank you :) Is that it?

JoodyBlue · 17/08/2023 13:08

Incidentally, the theme of disguise is across many of the Strike novels, the character of Robin is always dressing as different characters in the course of her work. Nothing odd about that, they are detective novels after all. But the theme of people not being as they first seem is recurrent in most/all of the 6 novels in the series so far.

JoodyBlue · 17/08/2023 12:43

@NotBadConsidering thank you :) Is that it?

Yes. That is it. In its entirety. There is nothing else. This one line was the entire cause of that outrage. Nuts, isn’t it?

JoodyBlue · 17/08/2023 13:20

It is. And as I say, disguises is a thematic of the series! Not really extraordinary in a set of detective stories.

DarkDayforMN · 17/08/2023 13:22

A police officer is trying to recall the events of decades ago and believed the suspect disguised himself in women’s clothing and a wig to avoid arousing suspicion.

But no serial killer would ever go to all the trouble of putting on a wig and a woman’s coat just to avoid getting caught by the police and sent to prison for the rest of his natural life! This is clearly transphobic af. 😡

I've been brainwashed into knowing there are just the two sexes.

Come on, unbrainwash me. Explain what trans is. And give me some examples of JKRs transphobia.

Should be simple, right? It's been nearly 4 years.

In science lessons originally you had the chromosome xx, xy
How has the current trans situation changed that ?
Is it now yes i was born xx but I now identity as xy as an example ?

I always go a bit quiet round cross dressing, what with wearing blokes' pyjamas (nice and roomy, pure cotton, dirt cheap), blokes' socks (less than I used to now that the women's sizes sometimes go above 41), my dad's old gardening fleece (quite comforting, reminds me of him) and any nice cotton charity-shop shirt in a colour I like - even -gasp Hawaiian shirts.

Lord knows what the true believers would think that makes me.

Short hair too, and unadorned fingernails.

I like wearing boxers rather than knickers - though can't do that when I have my period because of the need for a sanitary towel. Does that make me gender fluid?

I wear my OH's jumpers in preference to mine cos they're massive. I don't wear make up and sometimes don't style my hair.

IW would not think I was an actual woman I guess even if he was envious of the actual female body functions.

ApocalipstickNow · 18/08/2023 08:50

But if you read that bit NotBadConsidering has posted you can CLEARLY see that JKR has spelled out I hate trans folk by carefully hiding the letters in other words and not putting the k (or more accurately x) to make it seem more palatable. It’s all there you just have to look. and bullshit a bit.

Britinme · 18/08/2023 13:27

This is weird - I get an email notification about the £1m prize offered for a transphobic comment by JKR thread, and it brings me here!

Beowulfa · 18/08/2023 13:32

In one of the Potter books, as the kids are growing up, the boys are (magically) no longer able to access the girls' rooms in Hogwarts. As we all know, single sex protection is transphobic as fuck.

I'm going to spend my million on buying racehorses and giving them comedy names.

Britinme · 18/08/2023 13:34

Now what's really weird is that the email notification took me to a different thread, but when I posted the above comment it posted on the correct thread (this one) even though I wasn't on that page at the time. Spooky!

IcakethereforeIam · 18/08/2023 13:36

@Britinme that's JKR doing you a solid. She is a witch.

Britinme · 18/08/2023 13:47

Expecto Joannum!

GailForce10 · 19/08/2023 08:45

That sophistry doesn't even reach 6th form.

DevilinaCardigan · 25/08/2023 07:47

So…. has anyone claimed the prize yet?
Or, maybe, she didn’t say anything transphobic.

BezMills · 25/08/2023 09:19

I'm not saying she does a lot of dog whistlin, but everytime she tweets, her area of Edinburgh is filled with 1000s of stray dogs from every part of the Lothians region. Some reportedly from as far away as Hawick and Glenrothes.

Yes. She dog whistlin.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 25/08/2023 10:28

@BezMills the Green Party have produced a handy guide for you.

BezMills · 25/08/2023 10:55

Wow Green Party of England and Wales. Just Wow.

I've marked their homework. My comments in italics

1: Definitions

Transgender/Trans: To align/identifies with a gender (or non) that you were not assigned to at birth. This applies to non-binary people.
(Gender is not assigned at birth, Sex is observed at or before birth)

Cis: the opposite of trans; to identify with the gender you were assigned as.
If this is true then calling someone Cis is most of the time misgendering them since the vast majority of people do not have a Gender Identity.

Trans woman: someone assigned male at birth who identifies as a woman.
Nobody is assigned male at birth. They are observed to be Male at or before birth.

Trans man: someone assigned female at birth who identifies as a man.
Nobody is assigned female at birth. They are observed to be Female at or before birth.

Non-Binary/Enby: someone who's gender does not align with the binary conception of gender as 'man and woman'.
Man and Woman are not genders.

Transphobia: the hatred, irrational fear, aversion or dislike of, or discrimination of a transgender or non-binary person on account of their gender, of trans and non-binary people. Transphobia is both systemic and non-systemic, as are many other bigotries.
Fair comment in my opinion

Gender Critical: someone who believes that sex is the only factor to consider regarding if someone is a man or woman, not gender. (fair) Many Gender Critical people do not believe enbies are actually enby. (also fair) The term Gender Critical is often used by transphobes to disguise their bigotry as merely ‘sex essentialism’, not unlike those who use the term ‘Race Realist’ to disguise their racism.
Citation needed. Provisionally categorised as abject bullshit pending citation.

Conversion Therapy: the process of using intrusive (physically and/or mentally) procedures to 'convert' someone from being LGB to Straight, or in making someone trans into cis.
Fair

Detransition: when someone who was trans, for whatever reason(s) decides to stop their transition.
Fair

AGAB: Assigned Gender at Birth. This can be male (AMAB) or female (AFAB).
Too much bullshit in one sentence. See me after class.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 25/08/2023 11:06

You'll be met with a "polite correction"

How to disarm: If a genuine mistake, correct them politely and explain what cis means and how it isn’t a slur. If deliberate, ask why they think that and if they could explain how sex works then, considering how it isn’t a clear binary, as well as noting that reducing womanhood to biology is in the face of lived experience and is potentially racist and ableist.

IcakethereforeIam · 25/08/2023 11:09

'Lived experience'

Tw don't have any lived experience of being a woman.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 25/08/2023 12:46

Conversion Therapy: the process of using intrusive (physically and/or mentally) procedures to 'convert' someone from being LGB to Straight, or in making someone trans into cis.

If you have a gay woman who converts to being a straight transman does that class as conversion therapy?

EdithStourton · 25/08/2023 12:51

How is acknowledging biological sex as the underpinning of womanhood potentially racist? 😵‍💫
