As the title says, a million pounds is being offered by Distance Magazine https://www.thedistancemag.com/p/we-will-award-steve-wardlaw-1-million?r=uglk&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

"To win the Steve Wardlaw Prize™, an entrant must demonstrate that the cited statement by J.K. Rowling does not involve a rights conflict. That is, the cited statement must materially detract from the human rights of ‘transgender people’ without simultaneously arguing for the rights of another group, such as women, children, or people with faith traditions."

They've named the prize after Steve Wardlaw who I've never heard of but his pinned tweet is an apology to Alison Bailey

We Will Award Steve Wardlaw £1 Million For The Elusive 'Anti-Trans' J.K. Rowling Quote

He has assured us that it exists

Haha! Fantastic!

ArabeIIaScott · 14/08/2023 10:37

The mythical 'anti trans' statement. A 'dog whistle' that only the righteous and pure people on the Right Side of History can detect and judge.

If she sinks, she's innocent.

If she floats, she's a witch.

Welcometotheocbitch · 14/08/2023 10:39

Love this!!

Brilliant! After all these years my vigil may at last come to an end!

<shakes knee blanket with excitement>

I'll be sad to see the chair go.

Heliotroper · 14/08/2023 10:49

Who judges the prize?

Can the decision be taken to an actual court?

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 14/08/2023 11:01

It's simple, her comments are transphobic because she doesn't completely capitulate to men and acknowledge that they are women too. Not accepting that twaw therefore there is no rights conflict is transphobic. Putting up a prize to say you must find a comment which isn't talking about a rights issue is transphoic as there is no conflicting rights issue.

Of course that's only true if you live in the upside down world of gender woo.

Shodan · 14/08/2023 11:07

Bloody hell.

I just trawled through the appallingly-written, hysterically-toned Vox piece that NotTerfNotCis linked to above.

I foresee many, many similarly unhinged people desperately claiming that their 'unique' interpretation of words and phrases is the correct one, to claim the prize.

It makes me very happy, to think of them all tying themselves up in knots to translate things to fit the criteria.

lechiffre55 · 14/08/2023 12:38

Are we allowed to replace JKR's words with our own incriminating strawman to win the prize? Asking for a friend.

lechiffre55 · 14/08/2023 12:40

Has anyone tried to claim the prize with "just google it"?

DialSquare · 14/08/2023 12:43

I wonder if ContraPoints is on a spending spree yet!

MorrisZapp · 14/08/2023 12:49

Oh god this is brilliant!

AutumnCrow · 14/08/2023 12:50

ApocalipstickNow · 14/08/2023 09:54

Well if anyone can decode the cryptic meaning behind her words I still reckon they should win Dusty Bin rather than the holiday.

The skies are blue and the grass is green
hang on to your hats and prepare to be seen

'Ok so "hats" - think of hats - what types of hat are there? Sun hats! And then "seen", hmmm, seen, spell it another way and you get Sean! Think of a famous Sean, that's right, Sean Connery, who starred in Dr No ... which was set in? The Caribbean!

'Now fuck off with your bin.'

GrumpyPanda · 14/08/2023 12:52

There can't be a rights conflict because doncha know, TWAW.

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 14/08/2023 13:03

Oh how delicious. I shall patiently await someone claiming their prize. I mean, surely it's easy.

MavisMcMinty · 14/08/2023 13:09

Shame this prize wasn’t offered at the time JKR’s infamous essay was published. I was so naive that I believed when people said it and she were transphobic then it and she must be. I couldn’t see it myself, and I read that essay over and over again trying to find the fear and hatred and discrimination I was assured were all in there.

No wonder people don’t get involved in the debate, it’s all so deliberately baffling.

RocketPanda · 14/08/2023 13:25

Hey JKR, I don't know if you read these here threads ( of course you do, why wouldn't you, we're a hoot in here) if you wouldn't mind can you post something that only I can see so I can claim the prize? It's been a shite summer and I just got my electricity bill and I had to let a bus load of elderly tourists use my loo yesterday and I've no toilet roll left.

JoodyBlue · 14/08/2023 13:28

The vox piece is completely untruthful in its assertion that Troubled Blood, the Strike novel, portrays a character that dresses in women's clothes with a view to attacking. I've read the novel and so have many others and can't find this at all. I think there is a single sentence where a witness reports that the character they saw may have worn a woman's coat but couldn't be sure. This is really scraping the barrel to come up with nothing. Sadly there will be idiots who believe this rubbish.

Shodan · 14/08/2023 13:38

@JoodyBlue I think I can clear that up for you.

The sentence might have read as 'they may have worn a women's coat' but what it actually said , if you turned it upside down and wore the special spectacles, was 'My name is J K Rowling and I'm a massive transphobe'.

It's like those people who said they could hear demonic messages in records that were played backwards. Only True Believers can read the real words.

Thanks for sharing. There are some interesting articles on that website. The one about Andrea Dworkin’s account of a conversation with poet Allen Ginsberg was an eye opener.

Wow I just read the Dworkin article on Ginsburg, what a horrible horrible man...
The website is excellent.

FannyCann · 14/08/2023 13:55

Maybe Oxfam can come up with a prizewinning answer. Since many people have cancelled regular donations and no longer use the shops I'm sure they could do with a million to top up their funds.

ApocalipstickNow · 14/08/2023 14:00

You have to read it backwards, then not only is it transphobic but it also says “it’s fun to smoke marijuana” and “I buried Paul.”

(nods wisely)

FannyCann · 14/08/2023 14:07

Funnily enough I have just finished reading The Silkworm, no 2 in the Strike series. Reason being I had watched the programmes and thought it not worth reading the books since I knew the plot. But I so enjoyed Troubled Blood (Ink Black Heart less so, it was so hard keeping up with on line names and IRL names - I should have kept a spreadsheet) so I've gone back to catch up while waiting for the next instalment in the series.
Anyway I enjoyed the Silkworm very much.
And was quite surprised as there IS a trans woman in the book, who, apart from attacking Strike is portrayed very sympathetically with some background explanation along the way. The book was published in 2014 and it made me realise JKR has been researching this for a long time. Way before I knew of the GRA , proposed self ID and climbed that mountain.

Evidence of understanding and background knowledge but definitely no transphobia. And it made me smile as the TRAs made such a fuss about the character in Troubled Blood but clearly haven't read the earlier books.

I'll do my own - £3.50 of Tesco clubcard vouchers to anyone who can define 'woman', not including all of us who know it's 'adult female', of course....

Ooh, ooh, I know! A woman is a person with lady feelings. Shall I dm you where to send my vouchers?

EdithStourton · 14/08/2023 14:47

<pulls up chair>
This should be exciting!

Oh, god, I remember that!!!
