As the title says, a million pounds is being offered by Distance Magazine https://www.thedistancemag.com/p/we-will-award-steve-wardlaw-1-million?r=uglk&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

"To win the Steve Wardlaw Prize™, an entrant must demonstrate that the cited statement by J.K. Rowling does not involve a rights conflict. That is, the cited statement must materially detract from the human rights of ‘transgender people’ without simultaneously arguing for the rights of another group, such as women, children, or people with faith traditions."

They've named the prize after Steve Wardlaw who I've never heard of but his pinned tweet is an apology to Alison Bailey

We Will Award Steve Wardlaw £1 Million For The Elusive 'Anti-Trans' J.K. Rowling Quote

He has assured us that it exists

which JK Rowling has condoned many times

She hasn't "condoned" them, because they haven't done anything wrong by setting up a charity for lesbian, gay and bisexual people. Homophobia.

See image

I’m on my phone so the image is really small and I thought it said Michael Biggs not Michael Baggs and I was very confused for a moment.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 16/08/2023 13:53

Not sure why you’re putting that on MN, @donnawinters - there’s no £million prize here for mixing up transphobia with homophobia and failing to understand the meaning of either. Tell it to the prize-givers. Let us know if you win!

Grin do come back and buy us all a drink @donnawinters

We also have the matter of definitions.

Given that in the PN editor's dictionary "hate" and "abuse" often mean "people disagreeing with me" and "deluge" and "pile on" mean "lots of people disagreeing with me". The factual accuracy of the complaint is open to question in the first place.

I think the House of Commons might have to reform its procedures.

Original: The Speaker says "The Question is that...", states the question and next says "As many as there are of the opinion say Aye". Then, following shouts of "Aye", the Speaker says "Of the contrary, No" and similar shouts of "No" may follow.

New Pink News Version: "As many as there are of the opinion say Aye" ... followed by the Speaker saying "And all the Haters?" and pandemonium and arrivals by the Polis may ensue.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 16/08/2023 14:51

Pink news, I'm sure at one point they published something ridiculous like 30 articles in one week about JKR being an evil transphobe bigot right wing blah blah.

A targeted campaign of hate and bullying some might say....

lechiffre55 · 16/08/2023 16:40

To laugh at a gay man because he says something silly is not homophobic.
It is the silly that causes the laugh.
To laugh at a gay man because he's gay could be considered homophobic.

When someone behaves hypocritically, laughing at the hypocrisy is not a comment on their sexuality, but on the hypocrisy.

Being gay or any other protected characteristic does not make you immune from criticism or ridicule if you do or say silly things.

That’s what I was going to post. She’s laughing at the hypocrisy of a man who works for a publication that hounded her incessantly. It was schadenfreude, nothing to do with his sexuality. Honestly, you really have to look at things askance to get to the conclusion you drew.

The idea that women like me, who’ve been empathetic to trans people for decades, feeling kinship because they’re vulnerable in the same way as women - ie, to male violence - ‘hate’ trans people because they think sex is real and has lived consequences - is a nonsense. This is a quote from her x account where she says she hates trans people

Maaate · 16/08/2023 19:36

I hope donnawinters didn't injure themselves too much with that stretch ☹️

Jk Rowling also said on x "TERF wars" which means trans exclusionary radical feminist

Maaate · 16/08/2023 19:44

Umm, I may have misunderstood you Margaret, but are you saying that JKR has posted that she hates trans people based on the tweet you've quoted. Because if so, it's saying the opposite...

OhcantthInkofaname · 16/08/2023 19:46

NotBadConsidering · 14/08/2023 09:34

Is it a million for each comment or first in, best dressed? If two people claim the same comment at the same time do they get a million each, or split the money. I don’t think they’ve thought this through, it could end up being a very inexpensive exercise…

How about the fact that there aren't any comments? JKR mimics my thoughts exactly! A friend of mine / former colleague and I discussed whether we would pass nursing anatomy and physiology today. If despite what we were taught we now were supposed to say there were not female bodies and male bodies.

This post is confusing. All but the last sentence should presumably be in quotation marks.

Then the last sentence - is this your reading of the quotation? That JKR is saying she hates trans people?

If so, comprehension skills are lacking here.

Read the basic parts of the sentence: "The idea that women like me, who’ve been empathetic to trans people for decades ... ‘hate’ trans people ... is a nonsense."

Also note that the verb 'hate' is in quotation marks, because it's what other people have said.

She says the idea is nonsense - that is, the idea that women like her hate trans people.

lechiffre55 · 16/08/2023 19:52

I think there's some communication and comprehension challenges going on above.

Dear God 🤦‍♀️ You may be able to read, but your comprehension is nonexistent.
How very embarrassing for you.

If you mean Margaret Thatcher, the politician, we know you can't be her, what with her being dead.

If my knowledge is correct pp can’t be Walter White either…

Whatsthepoint1234 · 16/08/2023 20:19

I’m going to get my head torn off for saying this but she has made multiple transphobic comments. She wrote an entire book with a transphobic premise. However you choose to not recognise her actions as transphobic due to your personal opinions. Transphobia isn’t just calling somebody a slur, it’s much deeper than that. Just because she hasn’t said she hates trans people, doesn’t mean that she isn’t transphobic. Transphobia and antisemitism seem to be the two most socially accepted forms of discrimination. I hope in years to come, some of you will look back at your actions in distaste!

AutumnCrow · 16/08/2023 20:20

Go on then, give us some proof. What has she said that's transphobic??
