As the title says, a million pounds is being offered by Distance Magazine https://www.thedistancemag.com/p/we-will-award-steve-wardlaw-1-million?r=uglk&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

"To win the Steve Wardlaw Prize™, an entrant must demonstrate that the cited statement by J.K. Rowling does not involve a rights conflict. That is, the cited statement must materially detract from the human rights of ‘transgender people’ without simultaneously arguing for the rights of another group, such as women, children, or people with faith traditions."

They've named the prize after Steve Wardlaw who I've never heard of but his pinned tweet is an apology to Alison Bailey

We Will Award Steve Wardlaw £1 Million For The Elusive 'Anti-Trans' J.K. Rowling Quote

He has assured us that it exists

I've seen lots and lots of TRA attempts to provide examples of transphobic JKR utterances.

Without exception, these attempts always run into many, many words, almost none of which are copy-pastes or transcripts of things that JKR has actually written or said. Key examples of things that JKR has actually written or said are never singled out in text boxes, highlighted in big letters, or similar. This may or may have something to do with all of what JKR has said on this topic being so circumspect and mild.

"Woman" is absolutely a protected characteristic under the Equality Act. It means being a female human (the definition is expanded for ease of drafting to include girls). Other mammalian females are not covered by the Act.

In the Equality Act 2010, "woman" is defined as "a female of any age".

It doesn't actually specify what species. We take it for granted that it applies only to humans.

What we need is an authoritative source which confirms that all UK laws apply only to humans unless specifically noted otherwise. There is this from the Incorporated Council of Law Reporting for England and Wales (ICLR) "Laws may be defined as the rules that govern the behaviour of human beings within a civilized society".

Which gives a solid definition of "woman" as "a human female of any age" with regard to the Equality Act 2010.

HermioneWeasley · 15/08/2023 14:02

@Nellodee you are right, in fact pregnancy and maternity discrimination are only covered because they are something only women experience- the original provisions were an extension of the Sex Discrimination Act. So when we pretend that men get pregnant it has real, material implications for women’s legal rights and protections.

It's like those people who said they could hear demonic messages in records that were played backwards.

Yes, a court case proved that it was an unfounded slur against Tseirp Saduj all along.

I couldn't find the Vox article about Dworkin and Ginsberg, but I did find this quote in another article, which resonated with me: Dworkin to Ginsberg - “What you’re saying to me is that you’re an exceptional man, and you’re not,” she said, “you’re just a man, like all of the others, who has no respect for the rights of other people.”

The article about Dworkin and Ginsberg mentioned upthread wasn’t in Vox. It was on the website linked in the OP. If you scroll down to the bottom of the “million pounds” article you can see the links to previous articles including the one about the Dworkin interview.

I'll do my own - £3.50 of Tesco clubcard vouchers to anyone who can define 'woman', not including all of us who know it's 'adult female', of course....

It's anyone who says they're a woman or who is told they're a woman by a TW who needs women to stop saying 'if you're a woman, I can't be they're in order to properly do they're womanly duty to serve men. Do I win? I'm wondering what to get for my £3.50!!!

Britinme · 16/08/2023 13:29

@LoobiJee - thanks!

donnawinters · 16/08/2023 13:33

I can provide an example of a JK Rowling homophobic tweet.

A gay man said he had received homophobic online abuse and she replied something along the lines of "haha I guffawed so hard I pulled something".

That's a response to the editor of Pink News complaining about Twitter pile-ons, not guffawing at LGBT people. Try again.

A homosexual man who complained about a homophobic hate and abuse pile-on from members of the hate group LGB-Alliance(which JK Rowling has condoned many times), yes.

DeanElderberry · 16/08/2023 13:42

'hate group'

try harder

popebishop · 16/08/2023 13:43

And she's laughing because... that guy is trans? Or because it's ironic that an instigator of hate, whatever their characteristics, complains about what people say about him on Twitter?

Bear in mind this is a person whose publication promotes the notion that sex is not real and sexual attraction is based in gender instead. That's homophobic itself and JK is clearly in opposition to it.

Is that the best you've got? It's a bit rubbish.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 16/08/2023 13:45

Is that the best you've got?

It clearly is Grin

LGBA stand for same-sex attraction.
You are saying this is wrong - hateful in fact - and in the same breath accusing others of homophobia.

Do you perhaps see why someone might even find that funny? It's because it's a bit of a silly thing to say, and silly things can be funny, when they're not oppressing a large number of people.

We've seen this before, I bet anything you can't post honestly.

If that's genuinely the best you can do, then you're either (a) insulting us by assuming we're that hard of thinking or (b) somewhat hard of thinking yourself.

You are being defamatory about a charity for LGB people.

And you really don't understand 'context', or how people reply on Twitter.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 16/08/2023 13:47

She wasn't even replying to him directly, she was replying to Simon Edge, a gay man who thought the "pile on" comment was a bit rich given the well known behaviour of Pink News. As did many other people.

That's obvious, so you have to pretend REALLY HARD that you don't realise that when you're standing up for your right side of history (that says it's hateful to support same-sex attraction).

MavisMcMinty · 16/08/2023 13:50

Not sure why you’re putting that on MN, @donnawinters - there’s no £million prize here for mixing up transphobia with homophobia and failing to understand the meaning of either. Tell it to the prize-givers. Let us know if you win!
