Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Should threads be moved out of here as well as in?

Just musing really.

We have threads moved into this board if monitors / MN think they are about sex & gender.

But we have recently had the Disney thread, which wasn't really about sex and gender but a wider issue, being used to say that FWR is racist and needs an even closer eye on it. We now have the great awakening thread which is only about sex and gender tangentially and more about conspiracy theory placed on this board.

Should the FWR users be actively reporting non sex&gender threads requesting they be moved out to somewhere more appropriate?

AutumnCrow · 04/07/2023 09:53

Yes, I see your point. Some of them should probably be in main Chat, unless there's a 'Not Very Up To Date Conspiracy Discussions' board?

(I wouldn't even inflict a couple of them on Feminist Chat.)

inkjet · 04/07/2023 10:19

I think you’re probably right, though I myself have probably posted tangential threads on here. The only reason I have is because I felt the topic sort of broadly relates to what we discuss on here and if I posted it anywhere else posters are more likely to just tell you off for the source/virtue signal/refuse to debate. The S&G board feels a bit more evolved! But I can see those threads open us to more accusations. (I haven’t actually read the Disney thread to know what was said btw).

Helleofabore · 04/07/2023 12:27

Technically you are right. But often people post here for the traffic. I am against moving any threads unless the OP wishes it.

Beamur · 04/07/2023 12:28

I thought that the conspiracy thread had sufficient relevance to stay. It's up to posters if they want to engage or not.

WhiteFire · 04/07/2023 12:41

This was entirely predictable, the chat board is like tumbleweed and this board has been shoe-horned into a one topic only which quite frankly has been a disaster.

If only things had been left how they were.

MsFogi · 04/07/2023 12:43

If we're honest though the most intelligent MNers are in this area of the site so if you wanted some decent advice on anything this is probably the best place to post 😁

LoobiJee · 04/07/2023 12:51

I think preparations are under way for another attempt to get FWR closed down completely. And that some of the threads on here and elsewhere are laying the foundations for that.

The thread that was moved over here from either chat or aibu is an example of that. I was shocked when I read it as it was clearly a “not a FWR thread” right from the OP through the many of the contributions. Then about halfway through I realised it wasn’t a fwr-originated thread but had been dumped here from elsewhere on the site.

There seems to be an effort on the part of some to turn fwr into a US-style right wing versus left wing forum, like a mini Fox News or something. I can’t work out whether some paid influencing company has been given a brief of trying to influence the next election and is using fairly crude US-style tactics. Or whether it’s a give FWR a bad name to get it shut down campaign. Or both. Maybe the international commercial reproductive exploitation of women trade doesn’t like the fact that fwr is so knowledgeable on the harms of surrogacy and wants it silenced.

Either way, there’s definitely been a noticeable change in the content.

I agree with getting posts moved out.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 04/07/2023 12:58

Agree OP. There's a real determination to silence FWR, just at a time where the wheels are coming off as the general public looks in horror at the targeting of children, the open displays of male fetish, the worrying data about sex offenders and the abusive tactics and coercive control visible to all.
On the other hand, MNHQ have held the line for free speech even when it wasn't in their financial interests to do so, so I suspect that the random anti women misogynists who pop up to berate us all will have limited impact.

Helleofabore · 04/07/2023 13:02

There really has been a concerted effort to portray FWR again as a 'problem' that MNHQ has to fix. There has been the usual accusations of different types of hate.

https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/site_stuff/4838748-mn-needs-a-closer-watch-of-fwr?page=1

I had thought the 'you are all right wing' had decreased somewhat over the past weeks. I realise it was just that I was on less threads. Now it is 'you are all being influenced and you cannot see it!'

MN needs a closer watch of FWR | Mumsnet

There is a concerning growth of posts with racist undertones cropping up on these boards, all under the guise of being proudly 'anti-woke'....

I agree also.

The Disney thread was not relevant to this board.

The contributers were attracted from all the boards as it was trending. So not reflective of the usual content. I don't think it should be deleted but it's more of an AIBU thread.

I don't think it was a coincidence that the site stuff thread complaining about FWR was started around the same time. I think this board is being watched like no other.

There will be this effort and we will still be here. And there will be another angle again tried when this one fails.

I'm in France and cannot see a 'great awakening' thread or a 'conspiracy theory' thread.

Are these the titles of the threads?

This is the thread I meant https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/4841348-abolition-of-the-nuclear-family

Exhibit B: Master bedroom thread.

Purports to be about sexism, when lo and behold its really about racism.

Hands up - I started the great awakening one - under the title re nuclear family. I will confess I was late to the women’s rights and gender discussion and then you wonder “how did I miss that starting “. It’s a bit like the boiled frog analogy - it seems to have got to be (for me) a hot topic with no real warning signs

on the post I do confess that I am concerned I am being led down rabbit holes but my concern was, where did this concerted effort by academics and now institutions and now states to erase women come from. Eg it feels as if the UN - which uses gender more than sex in all its documents - is seeking to minimise women at the expense of trans women.

I put it in this section as I have seen considered debate about women’s rights and the lunacy out there on this board. I’m not new to this board and contribute to some threads.

SallyLockheart · 04/07/2023 13:19

I also was not aware that this board was being monitored so closely

NotHavingIt · 04/07/2023 13:40

Who decides what is not appropriate or reflective of this particular sub forum, though?

I also started a thread last week based upon the performance of 'Christine and The Queens' at Glastonbury - as I felt it was totally about sex and gender and had lots of food for thought and discussion.

Some people were just very dismissive, though - and have to say that did tend to be from usernames which i was not very familiar with on this sub forum.

Spot on. The content, tone and quality of posts is unrecognisable from a year, even 6 months ago. Something's going on.

Like you wouldn't believe! Some days you can't move for deleted posts! New posters and odd tangents!

It makes it more entertaining i find!

I'm not sure what that thread was aiming for but it's refusing to stay in the bedroom. It's currently going down the drain At least that's where i left it, in a manhole!

It's been right wing/far right for several years now, threads and posters have been pointing out for years now but got poo pooed with stuff like "but even Nazis think the sky is blue, so why can't I agree with them on this?!'
It's just more out in the open now and doesn't even seem to be pretending to be about feminism any more.
Hardly a conspiracy worthy "must be being paid for to make us all look bad" 🙄

Boiledbeetle · 04/07/2023 14:07

The thing is a lot of us spend the majority of our time on this board alone. And just as in life if you had some not completely related news too say as evening class you took with a group of good friends you would still talk about other subjects with them. Sometimes there may be things that you think would be of interest to your like-minded fellow posters so it makes sense to stick it on here and not in some other board that no one is going to frequent.

HirplesWithHaggis · 04/07/2023 14:08

Could it be that recent media reports about trans rapists, men in women's sports etc are shedding that light we all want? So women who have previously avoided FWR are now reading and posting here, but aren't fully conversant with the culture on this board?

SallyLockheart · 04/07/2023 14:11

@Boiledbeetle deletions seem quite mild compared to the royal family threads 😀
