Would you ever consider a transwoman a woman?

1000 replies

ZeldaFighter · 10/04/2023 18:10

If a person had transitioned from male to female early in life and had lived quietly and unobtrusively as a woman for say 20 or 30 years, would you consider offering that person the status of "womanhood"?

Would you go on a girls night in a group with them?

Would you think differently if the person had had gender reassignment surgery?

What if they did actually pass?

What if they had a husband and kids?

This isn't a gotcha and I don't know the answers. I am instinctively annoyed by the taking away of women's things but I am also dismayed by the hurt and harm potentially caused to trans people. I'm trying to decide my own position and wondering if there are compromise positions. Apologies if this has been asked before and thank you for your thoughts.

You wonder how some people manage to make it out of the house in the mornings.

"Brush my teeth? But what about my comb? That has teeth. Do I brush that? And what about saws? Saws have teeth! I'll saw my hand! You are literally telling me to saw my arm off!"

"What, the teeth in my mouth? But what if I hold a comb in my mouth? What if I had my mouth sewn up after an accident? What if I were a different person who was born without a mouth? How can you tell me to brush my teeth when you can't even define what that means??????"

Trans women need gyno services too, so I'm not sure there is a male gynecology ward.

just because a man gets his penis inverted, or a part of his intestines is fashioned into a internal tube does not in any way mean that man will ever be in need of a gynacologist. Nor will taking hormones designed for women. A reconstructive surgeon maybe or an endocrinologist but not a gynacologist

No. A girl XX born with a birth defect resulting in no vagina. One is created using the peritoneal pull thru technique, exactly the same as some trans vaganas are made. So, keep up here, an XX girl, with a neo vagina that is identical to a trans woman's neo vagina.

Are you aware of the many parts that make up the female reproductive system?

Women's reproductive bits are more than just a tube of flesh you know!

That is the fore-mentioned misogyny shining through. Reducing women to just a hole.

Checking back in and no one can disprove that JKR pretends to be a man for work.

Concealing your identity is not the same as pretending to be a man.
That's how online username and anonymity work for example.

Your username is "hotdiggetydog".
By your own logic, you're pretending to be a hotdog on mumsnet.

No Moth, you are LITERALLY a moth and I am LITERALLY a hyena and hotdog is LITERALLY a bun short of a picnic.

I am LITERALLY a cat addicted to dreamies. (Or else my cat has logged on now which i would not be surprised by).

I would make a joke about me being part of a band of literally flatulent animals. But I can't ignore the cognitive dissonance.
It's like trumpton over our way.
Maybe too much fibre.

And conveniently failing to answer the question I posed below: if this friend who is considered female for all purposes presents at A&E with acute abdominal pain, should the clinicians first carry out a pregnancy test to exclude the possibility of ectopic pregnancy (a uniquely female medical emergency), or should they avoid the delay this might involve by focussing their efforts on other possible diagnoses which might apply to a male body?

This appears to be a genuine conundrum for some. Otoh I'd wager that even those most enthusiastically TWAW medics would be clear about the appropriate diagnostic path they should be following here (and if they didn't they could expect to be having some interesting conversations with their professional indemnity organisation).

As it happens, Saturday was Dog Farting Awareness Day: https://www.checkiday.com/8a6b3e9073c00241bace9159c1a293e3/dog-farting-awareness-day

It's Dog Farting Awareness Day!

Let's talk about farts. Like humans, all dogs fart. It doesn't matter their age, size, or breed. Sometimes people blame their own farts on dogs, but sometimes dogs really are to blame. Those who are thinking about adopting a dog must be aware of this....

SirChenjins · 12/04/2023 22:05

Can a dog fart if it’s a cat?

SidewaysOtter · 12/04/2023 22:16

I’m LITERALLY a water dwelling creature stuck at a 90 degree angle. Causes havoc with the balance, I can tell you.

And no, a trans woman is never a woman. I used to see a TW at work and I’ve met a couple socially. Two of the three were lovely people (the third was an obnoxious arsehole but I think that was just their particularly unpleasant personality) but they were not women. I did not want them to use women-only spaces, no matter how nice they were.

Animalsoffartingwood · 12/04/2023 22:20

Hurrah my own day! Since international women's Day got taken over by the men's I've not had one. At least there's a silver lining if the perimenopausal parps stay.

She could equally easily conceal her identity by using a female nom de plume* but pro actively pretends she's a he.

*French for pen name.

If she proactively pretended she was a he we wouldn't know it was her. She would have kept it a secret. She makes no secret of the fact it's her. Therefore she isn't pretending to be a man. She merely used a different name. Or would you have preferred she use Roberta? How about if she had then shortened it to Robbie or Robin? Would she still be pretending to be a man in your eyes!

And the fact that Joanne Rowling openly uses a pen name is the same as men pretending to be women and imposing themselves on women's spaces without consent?

There is just not a single equivalence.

Using a pen name harms no one. Pretending to be the opposite sex and then using that to impose yourself on women oppresses women.

Harms no one other than the community of male authors trying to make a living under their own sex.

I didn't know it was the same person. It doesn't say so on the cover. It's deception.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha , yeh right.

So that's why publishers tell female authors to consider to publish under male names to be taken seriously!
