A Mumsnet thread about a book about a Mumsnet thread “Under the Duvet of Darkness” written by the women of Mumsnet

For once we can do a thread about a new book where all the writers are actually on this very board!

Some of you know what I have been up to recently, when I can tear myself away from posting twaddle, gifs and sweary words in bigly letters on here, but for the rest of you…

Over Christmas and New Year after the passing of the GRR (Scotland) Bill a thread was started by TerfranosaurusVagina on the Mumsnet FWR board with a poem about Nicola Sturgeon. Eventually on that thread (and a couple of other threads) over 80 poems were written.

Ramblingnamechanger suggested we do something with them to raise funds to help the women of Scotland and whilst Dodecaheidyin was tempted to write to Poetry Please on Radio 4, and ask them to do an extended special for Hogmanay about our poems, in the end it was decided to make the thread into a book.

After much procrastination by me “Under the Duvet of Darkness: Poems written by angry women for angry women because WOMEN WON’T WHEESHT” went live on Amazon on 31st March

https://amzn.eu/d/98aEnJy

If searching on the site you need to:

Select BOOKS as the department and UNDER THE DUVET OF DARKNESS in the search box.

Currently it doesn’t show up in the main all departments search (I don’t know why or if it will, it takes a while for everything to work properly according to Amazon).

Theres also a QR code below which should take you right there (hopefully the attached works)

MONEY FROM SALES:

In honour of Magdalen Berns, who co-founded the Scottish campaign group For Women Scotland, 100% of the profit from the sale of this book will be donated to For Women Scotland.*

*Please note that whilst the profit will be donated to For Women Scotland they are not involved, nor are they responsible in any way for the themes, contents or publication of this book.

it's a wonderful review whichever of you lot wrote it (as it's definitely got the hand of a mumsnetter in its creation)

It does make me free proud yes😁 but not half as proud as I am currently am of the one amongst our number who is having to deal with me in real time....delete that full stop! Centre that, no not that sorry that! Now can you shift that there. What happens if you do..? I know I've got you to change that bit twenty times but could you just...

Never offer me free labour, I will take advantage and test you to the limit of your be kind endurance!

I've just released Boiled from 'helping' for today

Honestly she's right. Never offer her free labour!

But as your Fairy Kindle Mother I can confirm the e-book is getting really close to being done!

I keep trying to wave my wand to make the process go faster but it doesn't seem to work on Boiled for some reason!

So I shouldn't mention Boaty McCallyMacface, then?

Boiledbeetle · 25/05/2023 07:31

its because it's been deemed an 'adult' book and is therefore not shown on a general search. So you have to make sure you select books as a department to search. Then it will appear!

Or click on the link below 😁😚

Thank you Boiled!

Keep fighting.

Keep fighting for our rights,
though they said they are others,
Keep fighting for our right,
to call ourselves mothers,
Keep fighting for our rights,
to safe and secure places,
Keep fighting for our rights,
to be able to win races,
Keep fighting, the battle never ends.

@Ritasueandbobtoo9 💜 You lot are making this difficult. Rita's poem made me go back and look at the thread since we reached the cut off point of 20 additional poems.

There has been some cracking poems since then.

So..... What do people want to do? Do those poems languish, hidden on this thread? Or do we think... (god I can't believe I'm actually entertaining this thought seriously) at some point in the future, when we have enough new ones and sales have dwindled completely on the first one, do a volume 2?

It could cover a larger time frame, and more subjects connected to this whole shit show?

At some point in the future I reckon it would be good to do the current one as an 'updated' one including the bonus material going in the e-book, whether a second one happens or not.

So, what do people want to do? (your wish is my command).

Thoughts welcome
Bb x

Just got mine this morning, so I might have been one of your additional sales :)

Been chortling out loud - and reading the parody of 'I shall wear purple' to my terfy mate.

And trying to imagine the co-authors doing a reading of this book in the Edinburgh NUS ... 😀

Waitwhat23 · 27/05/2023 12:41

What a more general 'Poems from the FWR board' future book? The first one had a very specific focus - the next could be about all sorts of women's rights issues.

Boiledbeetle · 27/05/2023 12:55

@SerafinasGoose 🌹

I shall wear purple is sublime @beastlyslumber did wonders with that poem!

Can you imagine a load of us shouting poems at spotty TRAs!!

Although as I have to remain anonymous I'd want the wonderful Elaine of melon fame to stand in for me to read my poems!

@Waitwhat23 that's what I was thinking. UTDOD is very tight both in it's time frame and focus. A more wider range of things around FWR boards would be good I think. it opens it up a lot more

These poems keep coming and the fight goes on so maybe there will be a volume 2?

Ourladycheesusedatum · 27/05/2023 22:36

VOLUME 2
VOLUME 2
VOLUME 2

and 3 and 4 and 5.

Boiledbeetle · 27/05/2023 22:54

Well no one has said no so far... Although it's very early in the voting! Come on someone must think this is an appallingly bad idea.

AHV HUD WORSE IDEAS

Boiledbeetle · 27/05/2023 23:59

@RealFeminist I'm not saying a word!

As @FairyKindleMother is otherwise engaged this bank holiday weekend there is no e-book update yet (software update screwed the hopefully final edited version yesterday so she is waiting on technical bods to resolve the issue - that or she's currently flogging the e-book somewhere under a different name😉) I thought I would let you know which poems are going in.

So the date of the latest poem to go in was

@WinnieFosterFights on 10th April 2023. All poems after that haven't. Sorry. 😶

But they do become the first lot to go into currently hypothetical volume 2 if that's the way this goes.

Narcissistic Entitlement

In a hundred years,
This will be looked upon as a period of mass delusion.
Children will ask their grandparents
'Did people really believe that humans could change sex?'
And the answer will be 'Yes. With threats'.

The era will be pored over, scrutinised, discussed.
Students will look at the
How? Why? When? Where?
The why is simple.
Hatred of women.

'You asked for equality!'

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 28/05/2023 12:28

Can people change sex?

Can people change sex?
It was thought nought.
But times have changed,
and medicine was bought.
People should be what they want to be,
man’s people should see what they want to see.

PurpleBugz · 28/05/2023 12:30

I vote a volume two.

I have a poem I would love to contribute

ComradeIcakethereforeIam · 28/05/2023 12:39

I vote volume 2, I might be persuaded to start composing. I've got a first line...

'There was a young them from Nantucket'

it's that tricky 2nd line <taps teeth with pencil>

PurpleBugz · 28/05/2023 12:40

As people are posting them here is mine. I'm not sure it's final draft yet so please start another thread if you do book 2!

Violation

I am a woman my sex bears the children
Trans women are men childbirth doesn’t include them

I am a women sometimes I will bleed.
Trans women cant have periods because he’s a he.

Men are not women. They can’t have our word
But they are taking it anyway I am unheard

I do not consent I do not consent
You say silly woman doesn’t know what she meant

Men are now women. They seek to erase us
The world let’s them do it as it is misogynus

Things meant for women go to men now
Speak up you get slurs turf bigot dinosaur cow

You bring your power against us to subjugate
Real women are suffering male sexist hate

Our children are brainwashed. transition they push it
Transing gay kids is just homophobic

Men are lesbians. Not dating them transphobic
Lesbians are suffering for saying they don’t want dick.

Im told to deny them is to activately hate them
I say men in definition of women is a utter violation

Boiledbeetle · 28/05/2023 12:47

Oh my days. Looks like boiled found a new job.
I cant write poetry to save my life. So pleased others can.
Some cracking poems upthread to get vol2 started.

Boiledbeetle · 28/05/2023 12:52

Honestly poetry can come in many forms and anyone who has read the first book will know all poems accepted, I mean seriously did you see my last contribution to the book? It was dire!

I spent two poems just shouting random words and putting FUCK OFF at the end!

Try writing a paragraph on how you feel about something. Then you work from there. Can you add in bits, if you broke the line here rather than there...

Yes there 'accepted' forms of poetry but the good thing about poetry is that it can presented in any way.

If you need someone to go through the threads and copy and paste all the poems into a word document I'm happy to volunteer. I can't edit or spell check or deal with people but boring grunt work I'm up for x
