Press conference by Seb Coe stating that male to female transgender athletes who have gone through male puberty will be excluded from female competition!
At last.

🍷I’m raising a glass tonight to common sense, fairness for women, Sharron, all those who spoke out about TW in female sport and all the fab women here!

MrsOvertonsWindow · 23/03/2023 17:55

Excellent news. And well done to all the women and men who took on and won this fight.

sashagabadon · 23/03/2023 17:55

Great news! I think the guardian journalist is actually quite pro protecting the female category, he has written about it a few times. They do have another one that wrote in an article how inspiring it would be for girls to see trans girls winning gold on the podium. I still wonder about that way of thinking now. Can only assume he does not have daughters

NecessaryScene · 23/03/2023 17:55

Hang on, did they announce anything about DSD athletes? They've always been covered by a completely separate ruleset, so this may not (directly) change anything there.

rioseco · 23/03/2023 17:56

Open and Women's categories in all sports would be perfect.
Fair and inclusive.

I'm relying on memory - but I think they have said that they will address DSDs separately.

DSD athletes to have testosterone under 2.5 - which is at least a level that some females could have. Still does nothing to mitigate height, q angle, lung capacity etc but I think they will struggle to drop their testosterone that low.
Would like to see this rule apply at all levels not just international but it's a good start.

Needapadlockonmyfridge · 23/03/2023 18:04

Hoorah for some common sense at long last.

rioseco · 23/03/2023 18:04

DSD athletes must reduce their blood testosterone levels to below 2.5nm per litre and maintain it for 2 years before competing in any track and field event.
Great news!

Wonderful news and a justification of the efforts of our women athletes

TheBiologyStupid · 23/03/2023 18:06

Just heard this in the R4 Six o'clock News headlines - fantastic, but it's taken too long for World Athletics to come to their senses.

GrimDamnFanjo · 23/03/2023 18:06

Weren't the top 3 in the women's 800m in Rio all DSD athletes?

This is a big step forward.
I've always been concerned that this issue could become the replacement of the 80s drugging scandal.

Villagetoraiseachild · 23/03/2023 18:07

I would be happy with a forever no, but if they need to sugarcoat the bitter pill, fine.
And wuhu!

lanadelgrey · 23/03/2023 18:08

Guardian journalist - Sean Ingle - has been great over this. He very heavily emphasised the fairness over inclusion point and it sounded like he was determined to stop ED muddying the waters or deviating from the story into opinion

Villagetoraiseachild · 23/03/2023 18:09

And create a separate category as needed. No one left behind and a level playing field/fair play for all.

Exactly- compassion all the way.

I was moved to tears reading about Caster Semenya and how she's been treated, way before all the gender stuff started.

I hope she can be treated with the respect she deserves.

Caster Semenya is male. Caster Semenya was born male. Unfortunately this wasn’t recognised. Semenya has a condition called 5 alpha reductase deficiency which only affects males.
This means that the external genitalia doesn’t form properly, hence the error at birth, but in every single other respect Semenya is male. Semenya has testes (internal) that produce normal male levels of testosterone. Semenya has been through normal male puberty. Semenya has male cardiac output, male lung capacity, male VO2max, male muscle mass, male bone density, male pelvic angles for running, and has no uterus. Semenya has never had to deal with a period, in training, in competition, ever.**

**Shamelessly copied from an old post from NotBadConsidering who put it better than I ever could.

Maybe you could find some compassion for all the female athletes who have lost out to Caster Semenya over the years.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 23/03/2023 18:09

They were @GrimDamnFanjo

yes Sean ingle has been unrelentingly excellent in this issue. Amazingly LOJ hasn’t organised a witch hunt against him to hound him out of his job - I wonder why….

Girlfromclapham · 23/03/2023 18:15

Brilliant news!

Queenofscones · 23/03/2023 18:15

Great news. Interesting to see what the Welsh government has to say. Still firmly TWAW and in favour of men in women's sport.

Tinysoxxx · 23/03/2023 18:16

BBC headline: ‘World Athletics bans transgender female athletes from competing in female world ranking events’

So does that mean trans men can’t compete in women’s sport??!

Wellies54 · 23/03/2023 18:19

The phrase 'fairness over inclusion' always really annoys me. Every man competing in the female category is a woman excluded. Every male winner is a female winner excluded.

However, I am very happy that now we have fairness and inclusion for women in athletics! I think 'not saying no forever' is an attempt to shut up the TRAs. They will have a lot more opposition if they try to roll back on this in future.

Aspergirl77 · 23/03/2023 18:19

Fantastic news!

Pixiedust1234 · 23/03/2023 18:20

Transmen do not exist. Transmen are invisible. Similar to middle aged women really.

People with Semenya's condition go through male puberty don't they? So they at least would be kept out by the main rule.

Exactly. I do feel sorry that Caster's sensitive medical information became public knowledge when she was so young, but that's on her coaches, for putting her forward for competitions when they must have known by that point that she was male - competitors spotted it immediately.
