Press conference by Seb Coe stating that male to female transgender athletes who have gone through male puberty will be excluded from female competition!
At last.

Well, if you start prioritising women in women's sport where will it end? Who knows what we might demand next? Hmm

Lol, did someone actually say that?!

Birdsweepsin · 23/03/2023 17:45

Am I a bad person for really enjoying Evan's "gosh, this is a surprise!" comments?

"Fairness over inclusion". Damn right.

Not sure where inclusion, or lack of it, comes into it. They can compete, they just can't compete in the female category. Job done.

Jugglingitallmum · 23/03/2023 17:45

Common sense at last

To the posters saying its a shame about the DSD athletes. Just how many are there competing at top level?

I can't provide figures but quite a few, apparently. Some athletics bodies actively look for promising athletes who were registered as female at birth and raised as girls, but who have a DSD that never got treated, or couldn't be treated, and who in a country with a more developed health system would probably have been diagnosed and registered as male as babies. Caster Semenya falls into this category, I believe. The advantage is that during puberty their bodies produce a lot of testosterone and as we know the effects of that on height, muscles etc are lifelong, even if the athlete later takes drugs to reduce testosterone levels.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 23/03/2023 17:46

Happy days - an outbreak of common sense.

Ttwinkletoes · 23/03/2023 17:47

We're not saying no forever
WTF? Why?

They are setting up a group which will keep an eye out for any emerging science. I’m really not bothered by this, because the day they prove men do not have an advantage over women in sport, will never come.
I think the group is being set up so they can’t be accused of hating trans people.

Open category... But not yet facilities for this, would be one of my guesses. Plus testing the water for legal kick backs...

Goldshelfie · 23/03/2023 17:47

I’m pissed off at the PM segment as well, that guest seemed shocked that fairness for women might actually be a priority!

I am obviously happy with this but frustrated at the fact that we have to be having this conversation at all tbh.

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 23/03/2023 17:48

Fabulous news, although why should we all be elated at an outbreak of common sense and biological awareness?

Men should never have competed in women's events.

Goldshelfie · 23/03/2023 17:48

One question that sums up everything:

What is the point of women's sport if the males in it have an unfair advantage?

Birdsweepsin · 23/03/2023 17:50

Just realised a horrifying possible problem

Coe said it applies to trans athletes who have gone through male puberty

In other words, get your (sporty talented) boy on puberty blockers quick enough and watch, er, her, shine....

Kucinghitam · 23/03/2023 17:51

DH and I heard in on R4PM and both went "No shit Sherlock!"

Artisticpaint · 23/03/2023 17:51

I excellent news well done Daley and Sharon and Seb
As for the people with DSDs they’ll have to compete with the trans category or not compete just like the overwhelming rest of the population who’s bodies don’t allow them to compete in the Olympics.

LizzieSiddal · 23/03/2023 17:52

@MissPollysFitDolly Lol, did someone actually say that?!

Yes but it was a Guardian make jouno so we shouldn’t be surprised.

That wouldn't work, though, as PBs and cross-sex hormones fuck the body. There's no way those kids would be able to compete at elite level.

Teatime55 · 23/03/2023 17:53

Good. It’s embarrassing them just breaking records and pretending they don’t have any advantage. Especially as in the men’s category they might not be winning quality.

Weak bone density due to puberty blockers equals more sporting injuries? Interesting to watch play out I suspect.

CwmYoy · 23/03/2023 17:53

Hurrah! Thanks, Sharron, and all those who want women's sport to be safe and fair.

JulesJules · 23/03/2023 17:53

R4 seem absolutely baffled by this surprising decision. The BBC headline was "transgender females to be banned from female sport" FFS.

Rainbowshit · 23/03/2023 17:54

This is amazing! Gender ideology is crumbling!!

Turnipworkharder · 23/03/2023 17:54

Sharron Davies has been so bloody amazing at fighting this stupidity, and Daily Thompson
supported her.

It'll be Open and Women's rather than Men and Women going forward - in the interests of inclusion.
