You’ve got to hand it to Gen Z!!

I know the whole transgender thing causes a lot of debate on Mumsnet. I’m not looking to stir that up here. But, regardless of where you stand, I think we all have to hand it to Gen Z for managing to freak out older generations so effectively.

Boomers spooked the Silent Generation with their love of rock n roll and the counterculture of the 60s.

Gen X framed the Boomers with acid house and rave.

Millennials were kinda lame as ‘hipster’ was little more than irony and beards.

Millennials and Gex thought they’d seen it all and were cool and tolerant.

But then came Gen Z who decided to disrupt the traditional thinking around gender. And all hell has broken loose. Gen X who thought of themselves as seriously tolerant have been massively freaked out!!!!

You have to hand it to Gen Z!!!

And Gen Alpha are looking at their blue haired, miserable older siblings and going…

’Nah mate, youse are all cringe’

EndlessTea · 10/02/2023 14:32

Lol

Nimo12 · 10/02/2023 14:35

I don't think we have to hand them anything. It's hardly comparable with acid house and rave. They've been utterly brainwashed into believing you can change your sex, if you're a tom boy you're actually a trans man and that non binary is a thing. I feel sorry for them.

GCAcademic · 10/02/2023 14:36

They haven’t “disrupted traditional thinking about gender”. They’ve entrenched it.

AncientBallerina · 10/02/2023 14:37

Yeah none of them seem to be enjoying their rebellion very much

Cailleach1 · 10/02/2023 14:40

Unfortunately, it was not limited to thoughts. There is a trail of damaged bodies and minds in the wake of all this. Medical ethics, science, rationalism, reality and safeguarding protections all eschewed and a coach and four allowed to trample over those made vulnerable by the uncritical adoption and promotion of this ideology in many countries.

Yep.

They make the OG goths look chirpy.

ItsCalledAConversation · 10/02/2023 14:42

I think they’re products of blue/pink plastic toys. If you don’t like princesses you must be a boy. If you don’t like tractors that means you must be a girl. Something had to result from all that hideous gender conformity. The result has been that they reject it all wholesale.

nauticant · 10/02/2023 14:43

How creative of Gen Z to have come up with this themselves. Except that much of it came from some seriously dodgy people who've been pushing this stuff from the shadows for decades.

How glorious for Gen Z to have turned laws upside down. Except it was done at the behest of Dentons, is the largest multinational law firm in the world.

AgathaX · 10/02/2023 14:44

What a load of bollocks.

Brefugee · 10/02/2023 14:45

bollocks they have. We fought (2nd waver here) against gender stereotypes and the rest. We cut our hair short or left it long, we went into male-dominated jobs or stayed home or did whatever we want and slowly freed ourselves of the patriarchical shackles of gender stereotypes.

And they, those absolute idiots, have sent us all back into "long hair and pink and dresses are for girls"
Sod them.

EdgeOfACoin · 10/02/2023 14:46

They're entirely regressive. Pink brains, blue brains and ultra-cool 'enby' brains.

They haven't 'disrupted' gender at all.

Onnabugeisha · 10/02/2023 14:47

Speak for yourself, I’m Gen X and not at all “freaked out” and quite tolerant of their cos-play.

Thelnebriati · 10/02/2023 14:50

I actually laughed out loud at that. There's nothing more regressive than thinking a woman who has short hair is actually a man. I used to have a pixie cut and spent a lot of my teenage years being asked if I was a 'lezza'.

Yes. It's not a laugh a minute when it's your dd wanting testosterone and a double mastectomy. My teenage rebellion was far less permanent

They seem way more naïve than previous generations for sure, maybe the 'dumbing down' effect of the internet manifesting itself?

NorthStarRising · 10/02/2023 14:51

‘They haven’t “disrupted traditional thinking about gender”. They’ve entrenched it.’

Yes, we were on track for making gender roles extinct.
Men with long hair, lipstick and nail polish, men sharing child care, women with careers and families of all shapes, sizes and varieties. Non-gendered lives, and then we started working on the internal genderism and emotional literacy stuff. Two sexes and little that was impossible for either.
And now?
Blown to shit.

Rickrolling · 10/02/2023 14:52

In the 1950s teachers and other civ8l service workers were awarded the rights to equal pay

In the 1960 abortion was legalised and the contraceptive pill was made available

The 1970s saw the first womens refuge set up as well as the Domestic Violence and Matrimonial Proceedings Act being introduced

1980 Women are allowed to apply for a loan or credit in their own names. Prior to this a women had to get their father or husband to sign for a loan even if they earned more.

1990s marital rape became a crime

2000s The Forced Marriage (Civil Protection) Act comes into force in the UK to protect vulnerable women.

And now, now you have the shitshow that is gender identity allowing biological males to compete in womens events, win prizes and scholarships for women and girls, access women's safe spaces like refuges and prisons and rape crisis help centres. Bravo. Bravo indeed.

Chocolatetoastforbreakfast · 10/02/2023 14:53

Why don’t you read this account by a whistleblower in a gender clinic, OP? Horrific tales of young bodies being mutilated and deformed in the name of your radical, edgy ideology.

www.thefp.com/p/i-thought-i-was-saving-trans-kids

Then spare a thought for the women locked up with rapists in prisons, refuges, the children assaulted in toilets, girls losing out to males in sports and being forced to change in front of intact males.

Perhaps after you’ve done that you won’t feel just quite so pleased with yourself and you might wake up to the fact that far from ‘freaking out’ the boring old squares you and your pals are endorsing a horror show that hurts and endangers women and children.

A little bit different to listening to some acid house music, I think.

Ponderingwindow · 10/02/2023 14:55

So very true.

I remember being a Gen X teen/ Young adult and thinking my actual Boomer Generation parents were a bit out of touch

my gen z teen would have disowned us by now if we hadn’t learned to speak very carefully on certain issues. Someday very soon she is going to notice her father is playing Hogwarts Legacies. I am expecting a full-blown 4 year old style tantrum.

EdgeOfACoin · 10/02/2023 14:57

Yes, the trail of scarred, infertile bodies wrecked through years of cross-sex hormones.

It's a blast. The olds are so freaked out. It's like rock music. Lolz.

HiccupHorrendousHaddock · 10/02/2023 14:58

Why engage with such a blatant shit-stirring post?

Brefugee · 10/02/2023 14:58

also it makes me laugh when i hear that Millennials and/or Gen Z have frightened or disrupted Boomers/Gen X who grew up with David bloody Bowie. T-Rex. Our parents grumbling "you can't tell the girls from the boys they all have long hair and make up"

blimey, our generation had New Romantics. Lads i knew would be hacking lumps out of each other on the rugby field, then going out with us in the evening in eyeliner, blusher and lippy. Rugby didn't make them boys and eyeliner didn't make them girls.

What we have now is horribly regressive and shows that campaigns like Pink Stinks and Let Toys Be Toys were right to fight against gendered clothes/toys.

RestingMurderousFace · 10/02/2023 14:58

I feel genuinely sad for them.

Brefugee · 10/02/2023 15:00

I mean, blow me look at OPs user name. A guy WHO WORE MAKE UP IN THE 80s and was the furthest thing from a woman or a gay man. Bloody hell, you lot, try harder.
