You’ve got to hand it to Gen Z!!

I know the whole transgender thing causes a lot of debate on Mumsnet. I’m not looking to stir that up here. But, regardless of where you stand, I think we all have to hand it to Gen Z for managing to freak out older generations so effectively.

Boomers spooked the Silent Generation with their love of rock n roll and the counterculture of the 60s.

Gen X framed the Boomers with acid house and rave.

Millennials were kinda lame as ‘hipster’ was little more than irony and beards.

Millennials and Gex thought they’d seen it all and were cool and tolerant.

But then came Gen Z who decided to disrupt the traditional thinking around gender. And all hell has broken loose. Gen X who thought of themselves as seriously tolerant have been massively freaked out!!!!

You have to hand it to Gen Z!!!

It’s quite rebellious though, no, that young queer people dint all want to present late 20th-century style butch dungaree wearing lesbians or camp gay men.

So many posters think the identities they have adopted should be the definitive and only options, when their own identities and presentation are recent phenomena themselves.

I have no idea why you're talking about butch lesbians and camp gay men.

As for the second paragraph. That's your misunderstanding of what you think people are saying. No one here is even slightly suggesting that. Why do you think they are?

Theeyeballsinthesky · 11/02/2023 13:25

what's rebellious about being told you should present as a girl because you’re a boy that likes dresses and pink - and not arguing for individuality but going along with it?

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 11/02/2023 13:30

Late 20th century stereotypes of gay men were all about showy-off muscles and lesbians were lipstick wearing glamour pusses (we're talking stereotypes, real people vary a lot). When did 'butch' start being a term applied to women, when I was a gel it was a word used for little boys?

Oh bless you. Have you actually met any lesbians or gay men?

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 11/02/2023 13:33

'the identities they have adopted'

I don't have an 'identity' any more than I have a 'gender'.

The pathetic little sheep who need those things should try breaking free.

FKATondelayo · 11/02/2023 13:34

2 points here.

Gen Z have the least sex and the most mental health issues so I'm more sad than outraged by them. (As Neil Brennan said Gen X shagged all over the place and we had AIDS to deal with.)

Just as most baby boomers weren't walking up and down the kings road in miniskirts smoking joints, most Gen Zers aren't blue-haired non-binary knee-taking students. My nephews and cousins' kids (early 20s) are all working adults with homes and careers (and the odd kid themselves) And, drugs/marriage aside, fairly socially conservative.

DarkDayforMN · 11/02/2023 13:36

Teddy Boys wore Edwardian-style coats.

There was a string art nouveau influence on hippy fashions.

You’re saying this in response to a comment about Gen Z’s adoption of stereotypes.

You don’t seem to know the difference between stereotypes and aesthetics.

No wonder you don’t understand any of the points people are making!

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 11/02/2023 13:44

I do feel sorry for them as an age cohort, having to deal with the fallout from Covid and the effects of lockdowns on their education, climate change, war, a greedy banking system, and in the UK, the resurgence of class structures and the catastrophic economic and societal effects of Brexit.

I'll sympathise wholeheartedly with any of them protesting, urge them to unionise, support them if I can. But I will not put up with silly ahistorical fantasies about 'gender'. Or any other guff about 'gender'

Backstreets · 11/02/2023 13:50

This would be a harmless youth rebellion if it was a fashion fad but as it involves mutilation surgery, is fuelled by commercial pornography and homophobia, and includes a cohort of decidedly NON gen z adult blokes demanding access to women’s single sex spaces (they may think they’re fifteen but transage hasn’t been quite accepted yet) it’s anything but. Christ, they don’t even have decent tunes.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 11/02/2023 14:01

Indeed, Gen Z freaking out older generations is an odd interpretation of naive people letting themselves be manipulated by a combination of business interests and predatory misogynists - from those same older generations.

everything you just mentioned is just traditional leftism.

you have to hand it to them because you can’t handle their ideas on gender.

they did their job and shocked the supposedly tolerant gex x ers.

It’s only mutilation in your opinion (and the small % of transitioned who regret).

There were a few acid casualties in the 60s too. Sad, but surely we are better off for having had that rebellion. Just like we are with trans.

Lol - olds said the same thing about Gen X.

Now it’s just dewy eyed nostalgia for rave, grunge and britpop.

You’re right about that. I can’t handle regressive ideas about gender. Gender is a system of oppression which previous generations of feminists (and some men) were trying to dismantle. Then, along comes this movement (as others have said, funded by rich middle-aged men) which entrenches it.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 11/02/2023 14:28

Not just homophobic, misogynist, and historically illiterate, also proudly right wing. Obviously enough, 'gender' being such a repressive doctrine.

Not shocked, just sad for them.

It’s not OK chemically castrate gay and autistic kids.

EndlessTea · 11/02/2023 12:19

There’s a difference being influenced by and controlled by though.

LSD wasn’t intended as a recreational drug and it was as cheap as chips - it’s not like it made big pharma a load of dough or turned people who took it into lifelong medical patients.

Although some men got very wealthy through exploiting women Larry Flint was a baby boomer himself.

Yay for microdots!

Genuinely much more fun than genital amputation.

I love the fact that the absent OP returns to educate us with the fact that Teddy Boys wore Edwardian-style coats.

Where would we be without this deep historical knowledge 😆

DarkDayforMN · 11/02/2023 14:44

Speaking of “acid casualties,” a friend of mine who has a professional interest in the area has been telling me how worried he is by what he’s seeing online with young people who have acquired drugs from the Internet. They don’t have experienced users around them to learn from and they end up accidentally taking insane doses, or taking combinations they shouldn’t, or they’re often using unresearched “research chemicals.” Even traditional forms of teenage rebellion have become far more damaging in a world where kids are online and socially isolated, and turning to strangers online to guide them through their crises.

The problem goes so much deeper than genderism - adults have created an online world that even adults aren’t well-equipped to deal with, and children are given unfettered access to it. Of course they are turning to snake oil salesmen who promise they have a simple answer to life’s problems and questions; they’re completely overwhelmed and trying to find their way through an infinitely complex and scary world without a roadmap.

Never did I think that my Fred Perry tennis whites would be the tools of fascists Sad But then I never thought people would claim that men are women when they put on a dress, so what do I know. 🙄

Theeyeballsinthesky · 11/02/2023 14:53

you Know what you’re right OP I can’t handle their views on gender

i can’t handle that they think girls who prefer to play football, climb trees and have shirt hair are actually boys and therefore need to cut off their tits

I can’t handle that they think giving up women’s single sex spaces to entitled males who haven’t heard the word no enough times just because they’ve grown their hair and popped on a floral blouse is the right thing to do and fuck actual women

i can’t handle they the set back womens rights years and retrenched gender stereotypes I thought we’d got rid of

they've done untold fucking damage on an individual and societal and no you’re right I can’t fucking handle it
