Scottish Parliament final debate on Gender Recognition Reform today

ArabellaScott · 20/12/2022 10:37

At some point after 2pm, in the Big Room (the Chamber).

www.parliament.scot/chamber-and-committees/whats-on-and-watch-live/whats-on#wm

Will be interesting to see how the Amendments go down, if they are all struck down as the ScotGov wishes - www.holyrood.com/news/view,gender-recognition-reform-crunch-vote-after-shona-robison-warns-msps-over-amendments

'the Scottish Conservatives have warned that the debate could lead to a "travesty of democracy" because a 15 minute time limit for each proposal will "shut down" discussion.'

Does she have the PhD? Wasn't there some controversy that she implied she had it but hasn't actually passed it?

She's an absolutely numpty regardless.

Almost slightly pleased they voted against something so obvious as it will grab the headlines....and hopefully public attention to see just how ludicrous the whole thing is.

I am still furious though

Calmdown14 · 20/12/2022 19:59

Thank you @ArabellaScott . Much appreciated.

I can't face it live.... and I think we know how the rest is going

Rearleft · 20/12/2022 20:01

I've just read M Chapman's FB page and her comments re this legislation and I am so angry.
"Trans people are up to four times as likely to be the victim of a violent crime as cis people. The #GRR bill will not solve this problem, but it will help make their lives a little easier. I am urging colleagues across Parliament to back this bill."

5 generations of women in my family, all experienced sexual abuse, all from predatory male non family members/strangers. Only one was reported, it did go to court and was successfully prosecuted.
Not violent crime I guess Maggie. Maggie would probably blame me - silly cis women that I am falling for "spiteful misinformation" and "populism"

She supports and will enable them. Her speech absolutely proves that.

ArtfullyCrumpled · 20/12/2022 20:04

@Rearleft I am raging for you and tears rolling down my face. I cannot believe this is happening in plain sight. This is populism! Cowards.

ResisterRex · 20/12/2022 20:05

Thank you @ArabellaScott. I'm finding it too depressing. And I have to do the CPS deception as to "gender" consultation Sadas it closes today

AlwaysTawnyOwl · 20/12/2022 20:10

ArabellaScott · 20/12/2022 19:36

Probably Westminster. And legal challenges. With any luck, it'll take down the whole GRA.

The first stop has got to be ensuring that the Equality Act defines sex as biological sex. This stops the worst excesses in their tracks. Rishi has already said he’s for it. You’ve probably done so but if not sign the petition on the Sex Matters website!

Skyellaskerry · 20/12/2022 20:14

@AlwaysTawnyOwl yes, already signed.

waterwitch · 20/12/2022 20:15

Thank you Arabella, impressive commitment 💐

Cismyfatarse · 20/12/2022 20:20

How on earth do we know what these amendments are? They don't show them do they? Is this going through the night? What happened to the debate? Is it now just endless votes on things we don't get told about.

I am so upset and do appreciate the support .
On one occasion a mother came up to young me and said my daughter is saying things about so and so - is she telling the truth. I replied yes she is don't leave her alone with him. Never mentioned again. That man would be jumping up and down for joy at this and I know for a fact he would misuse this legislation whilst getting off on it big time. He gave 12 year old me sexy underwear as a Christmas present that he knew I might unwrap in front of my parents! I was so distressed when I did unwrap it. That lovely affable chap to everyone. Dressing as a women and getting free passes into swimming changing rooms - that would be his wet dream watching me die inside powerless to stop him. That's one man, I could go on
Do these experts and MSPs really not understand these men? They must do because they see them change their gender when heading into prison

The hairs are up on the back of my neck and some of these politicians you have to assume are just incredibly naïve/privileged or worse.

Helleofabore · 20/12/2022 20:28

Thank you Arabella. You are awesome as usual.

JanesLittleGirl · 20/12/2022 20:32

My head is literally (in the TRA sense of the word) exploding!

When deciding whether to underwrite a risk I consider the following:

  1. What is the impact of the risk becoming a reality?
  1. What is the probability of the risk becoming a reality?
  1. What mitigations have or could be put in place to prevent the risk becoming a reality?

There are clearly risks involved in the proposed changes to the GRA. As far as I can see, the responses to the questions by ScotGov are:

  1. It can't happen because.... Obviously
  1. So tiny that we haven't tried to assess it
  1. Mitigations?

I would refuse to underwrite this crock of shite.

I haven't involved myself in the Scottish Independence debate until now as I believed that it was a matter for Scottish people but I am not prepared to see 3 million women and girls being thrown under this bus and will donate to Scottish Women's Rights and Scottish Unionist causes from now on.

Thank you so much for your hard work this evening @arabella

Ramblingnamechanger · 20/12/2022 20:38

Yes thank you Arabela for all your work. I am spitting with rage and despair. Surely this cannot stand. I don’t think I can bear to look tomorrow.

Rearleft · 20/12/2022 20:40

Thank you @ArabellaScott as hard as it is to hear
I've also signed the petition and spread it but in real life I don't speak as freely

No, she doesn’t have a PhD and she got in trouble a while ago for implying (I think actually just saying) that she did. She dropped out.

I’ve been a passionate advocate of Scottish Independence all my life. I’m devastated by all this and just don’t know where to turn. An endless future under a Tory Westminster government is a terrible prospect for me, but how can I continue to support this utter shit show? I can’t, I just can’t. I was actually a member of the Scottish Greens for several years until all this crap blew up and I got a bit of perspective on the party. The SGs were a proper pro-environment party when I joined. They are unrecognisable now. I feel so politically homeless and hopeless. Feeling very low and sad about my children’s future.

pepperminttaste · 20/12/2022 20:54

I could have written your post @mynameisnotkate 😔

Kucingsparkles · 20/12/2022 20:56

If anybody was in doubt that this is an extremist fundamentalist faith-based pseudoreligion, I should hope that tonight's events have proved it.

mynameisnotkate · 20/12/2022 20:56

Solidarity, @pepperminttaste All we can do is organise with like-minded people. There are a lot of us!

grannyjacob · 20/12/2022 20:57

I’m 68, love Scotland, lived here for over 60 years, but have family in England in an area that I also love. Tonight, I’m seriously starting to think how and if I can persuade my daughter/family to move down south with me. I thought I hated the Tories, but feck me, it’s nothing to what I feel about this shower of bastards.

MichaelFabricantWig · 20/12/2022 20:57

What a total disgrace this all is

mynameisnotkate · 20/12/2022 21:01

Actually, one of the reasons I’m pro-Indy is that under devolution, parties that are viewed as Westminster parties are not attractive voting prospects, which has resulted in the SNP, with SG support, having had no effective opposition for ten years. That is a very unhealthy situation and is exactly the kind of environment that breeds arrogance and an out-of-touchness with voters. I think Sturgeon feels pretty invincible and I think this issue will prove she is not.

On the sex offender's register and discover your inner womanliness? No problem! What ARE they thinking?

OvaHere · 20/12/2022 21:15

Managed to get to the end of this thread. Thank you for your work updating @ArabellaScott I don't think I could have watched live.

What a load of stupid, craven idiots bar the brave few that have attempted to point out the many, many flaws in this neo-religious batshittery.

Absolute fucking disgrace.

AnotherFuckingUsername · 20/12/2022 21:16

Sorry for barging into this thread - I'm appalled at what's currently happening at Holyrood and (belatedly, I know, I know) want to send an email to my MSP outlining my concerns about the GR bill, especially how, as it stands, it does not protect women at the most basic level. I'm currently working so need to get it off quickly - has anyone got template text they could share with me with or direct me to?
