Penny Mordant as PM - nooooooo...

Genuinely scared now that she might win - looks like she's second behind Rishi Sunak in nominations, and the most popular with Tory membership.

If gender self-ID is passed in law, it's going to be so difficult to repeal. (I don't trust her not to try, despite what she said on Twitter recently).

So also scared now that if she wins, the UK will go the same way re. gender policy as the US, Canada etc. and the UK as a beacon of reason in the world on this issue will be snuffed out forever. (Sounds hyperbolic but think it's near the mark).

How can we campaign to stop this? I've already emailed an appeal to the nearest Tory MP to me about this, but otherwise feel powerless.

Even if she’s Pm I doubt she’d get Self ID past the rest of the cabinet. <well that’s what I’m hoping!)

TooBigForMyBoots · 12/07/2022 17:13

I'm not sure there's anything you can do.🤷‍♀️ The next PM will be chosen by Conservative MPs and Conservative Party members.

Your objections count for nothing. The vote of pro trans agenda Conservative MPs is very, very important.

achillestoes · 12/07/2022 17:17

Kemi is still on the ballot. Truss is still on the ballot. Sunak is far from out if he wins in the MP vote. Polling doesn’t always reflect what people will actually do.

But if Mordaunt is PM, my vote swings back to Labour. She’d work with Nokes and Miller, and everything we have achieved would be in danger.

Bernadettebleu · 12/07/2022 20:59

Same here - their position on gender misogyny is the only reason I’d vote Tory. Will vote Labour if we get a TRA fanatic as PM.

MalagaNights · 12/07/2022 21:06

Let your Tory MPs know this is a vote loser.

Raise it on social media so candidates all get asked: what is a women.

Make it an acid test in the media.

Tweet at Julia Hartley Brewer to ask PennyM, she takes no prisoners on this.
And Nic Ferrari.

Every candidate has to be asked and put on the spot. It has to become the story.

ArcticSkewer · 12/07/2022 21:08

Don't know who I would vote for if she was leader. I've never voted Tory but was coming round to the idea. What's the point if they are as pathetically woke as Labour - LibDem?

NigellaAwesome · 12/07/2022 21:25

Quite apart from the self ID issue, she doesn't appear to have any relevant skill or experience? I'm genuinely surprised that she has so many MPs behind her.

MalagaNights · 12/07/2022 21:27

She's just been on Iain Dale LBC and said she never supported self id.

Iain Dale afterwards chatting to the political correspondent asked if the Trans issue is a big deal for this election.
Correspondent said it is and that PM was not being honest in her claim to have never supported self id calls her integrity into question.

We have to keep this on the agenda in the media let them know it is important to the public and let the Tory party membership know that PM is not being honest on this.

On the plus side: she seems to have realised the tide has turned.

I don’t want her although I’m glad to see she’s realised and changed stance but she would need votes

MarshaBradyo · 12/07/2022 21:35

She doesn’t scare me as much as Starmer and Labour because she’d have lower support on this issue

That she’s shown a u turn I reckon she’s aware the party do not want it

Needmoresleep · 12/07/2022 22:08

The prospect of her being PM is terrifying. She was no support at all when she was Women's and Equalities Minister. How dare she pretend that is not so.

Tempted to do a theatrical flounce and announce I will leave the country. I wont but I will despair.

Mollyollydolly · 12/07/2022 22:13

We need to keep it on the agenda, clear statements that she doesn't support self id so if the worst happens it's on record. On a wider note the obsfucation isn't doing her any good. She's lied about the maternity bill and her defence of the word women, cant see that escaping the likes of the Mail and Telegraph.

Whatever happens the issue is on the agenda and it matters. Think where we were a couple of years ago.

MiniTheMinx · 12/07/2022 22:36

Does it matter whether her opinion on gender is a vote loser? I so hope it is!

MsMcGonagall · 12/07/2022 22:39

I'm genuinely surprised. Why is she so popular? Where has her profile come from?

caringcarer · 12/07/2022 22:59

I have vote Conservative all my life, but I would not vote for Penny Maudant as she thinks transwomen are women. She does not seem to understand that if transwomen are allowed in women's sport, there will be no more women's sports. I won't vote for Sunak either as he is so sickly smug. If one of those two win I would be changing my voting behaviour, so would DH.

Just watched GB news because I saw it mentioned on another thread. I don't think I have ever seen such a forthright discussion about puberty blockers and surgery. No punches pulled. Just caught the tail end of it as I had to search for the channel. Stonewall, Mermaids and Jazz Jennings all featured. All the things that are never mentioned on BBC. At least it is being talked about.

MaryPearl · 12/07/2022 23:51

Interesting thread on Twitter by editor of Pink News, suggests Mordaunt was very committed to gender ID. twitter.com/benjamincohen/status/1546960614421139461?s=21

Datun · 13/07/2022 00:31

She's one hell of a slippery customer, isn't she. she did the exact same thing on her web chat. Misrepresented questions and answered with generalities and waffle.

She absolutely does believe it. She has said that transwomen are women and transmen are men. And that's the starting point.

That's the bloody starting point!

The minister for women and equalities believed that men are women and women are men. And everything else must stem from that.

The questions from 'Nic from Leicester' have been transcribed by Fairplay for Women. Telling.

RedDiamond · 13/07/2022 00:38

No to Penny.

ScrollingLeaves · 13/07/2022 00:45

^So I’ve never supported self ID. There are some people that socially transition, but what we were looking at was the Gender Recognition Act and it’s a process that people go through. There was clamour to separate that out from healthcare and I disagreed with that. So what you’ve said, Nicola, is not a reflection of my position at any time. I think that we needed to do some things to make it easier for people to access services. The waiting list to access services were a couple of years. There were things that we could do to help people actually have their documents, like driving licences and passports, actually in the same gender. Terrible problems for people when that didn’t happen

Very slippery.

MargaritaPie · 13/07/2022 00:54

IMO I think Penny needs to make it clear which side of the gender debate she's on.

Sloebluewalls · 13/07/2022 01:01

Im a floating voter. Might as well vote Labour if Penny gets in, i was only leaning conservative because they were going to keep the gender recognition certificate process and not go down the self ID rabbit hole.

Sidaway · 13/07/2022 09:12

#PinocchioPenny is a new hashtag on Twitter. I don't really "do" Twitter, but I hope it catches on.

OP posts:
Ereshkigalangcleg · 13/07/2022 09:20

The best hashtag I've seen is #PennyForTheGuys

Ereshkigalangcleg · 13/07/2022 09:21

IMO I think Penny needs to make it clear which side of the gender debate she's on.

That appears to depend on who she's talking to, and when.
