The point was that everyone (or most people anyway) regularly take a recording device into the toilets with them, whatever form it takes - not quibbling over what type it was

A phone has many functions though. A dictaphone has only one.

By calling it a phone you are downplaying it because most people do indeed have a phone, and making it look like people were suspicious for no good reason. Whether you are doing this on purpose or not I couldn't say.
