There I was believing my school biology teacher when he told us that the point of sexual reproduction was genetic mixing, thus reducing the impact of harmful mutations and allowing beneficial ones to spread.

Haha, yes in the real world that wold happen. I think about the people I interact with on a regular basis. If I came out with something like that they'd think I'd lost my mind 😂

I know. But I'm a boring old scientist. This does prove rather well that the English exam system needs an overhaul so that everyone has some post 16 education in science. Data really helps with this kind of quandary.

My Y6 kid has just been covering this in Science. The slides are really short, with lots of simple words, and even some pictures. I can ask the school to share them, if that would help?

Giving her the benefit of the doubt, maybe she meant that nobody knows why a particular ovum is fertilised by a Y sperm rather than an X sperm? I certainly don't know why number one child is male and number two child is female, and I'd be surprised if anyone does know.

Exactly, I think that is "checkmate".

Is she a journalist? Because 'why' was entirely the wrong word.

It wouldn't make sense even if she had said what she presumably meant to say which is that she doesn't believe there is a clear definition of man and woman - rather there is a spectrum of gender. But saying 'why' just confuses the issue even more.

Poor Ellie - maybe she should go on OJ's special course for the jornalistically credulous.
