Nobody knows why there are women and there are men?

According to Ellie Mae O'Hagan of the CLASS think tank:

"I don't know why some people are women and some people are men, nobody on this panel does"

Crikey, I know things are bad, but I didn't know we had reached Defcon 1 already.

You do wonder why it's called micro biology, don't you fox and why I spent so much time discussing early evolution if bacteria and archaea aren't considered "life".

Igneococcus · 18/11/2021 21:27

We will also have to correct how long we think there has been life on earth if microbes aren't considered to be living things.

Clymene · 18/11/2021 21:28

This thread has taken a turn for the brilliantly entertaining

dyslek · 18/11/2021 21:29

Fuck the microbes, what have they ever done for anyone.

Igneococcus · 18/11/2021 21:32

We wouldn't even notice if they'd all suddenly disappeared dyslek

dyslek · 18/11/2021 21:34

SCR0071 knows the score, for too long we have been letting bacteria trail along on our coattails. Alowing anyting to claim the title of 'Alive' just because it can move, resperate, eat/poos and reproduce.
Move over single cell organisms, we've raised the bar!

DisappearingGirl · 18/11/2021 21:35

@SCR0071

It isn't the male that solely determines the sex of a child- XX is a girl and XY for a boy - the chromosomes need to combine and that assignment is one last to be made.
Umm as others have said this isn't right.

All egg cells contain an X chromosome. Sperm cells contain either an X or a Y chromosome.

So at conception, the egg (X) either combines with an X sperm so the embryo is XX (female), or with a Y sperm so the embryo is XY (male).

Blindleadingtheblind · 18/11/2021 21:37

No idea what I've stepped into here but this thread is pure gold.

BloodinGutters · 18/11/2021 21:37

Organism meaning= an individual animal, plant or single-celled life form.

(Oxford English dictionary definition)

I have minimal understanding of science, but an MA in English literature and language, so does that qualify me to clarify life form means living thing @SCR0071 ?

You’ve taught us science and I’ve taught you English. We good?

This is like skill share on MN.

Yes it is the sperm, as the egg can only carry an X chromosome

Also, not sure what you meant by the assignment is complex because of dominance?!

foxgoosefinch · 18/11/2021 21:41

Errol but will SCR0071 be back to tell us more? I am really looking forward to their explanation of electron microscopy, and icosahedral symmetry in capsid protein structures

merrymouse · 18/11/2021 21:43

Most don't consider single cells single cell organisms as being living things

Somebody needs to brief David Attenborough.

dyslek · 18/11/2021 21:49

Honestly, you lot. All that Sciency factsy stuff is soooo over now.
You are just not understanding the advanced concepts SCR0071 is envisonging (is that even a word?)

They is introducing us to a whole new world of... stomach discomfort ( a Dr or biologist will find that funny, trust me)

dyslek · 18/11/2021 21:50

Also I think yoguart is involved.

SCR0071 · 18/11/2021 21:52

I have been talking about inheritance - a child inherits 50% of its genome from each parent - due to chromosomal assignment some seem to be denying - it is always a different 50% - there circa 8 million combinations from the 23 sets.

Igneococcus · 18/11/2021 21:54

What do you actually mean with "chromosomal assignment"?

BloodinGutters · 18/11/2021 21:55

@Igneococcus

What do you actually mean with "chromosomal assignment"?
It means if you get given the blue chromosomes or the pink chromosomes.
Igneococcus · 18/11/2021 21:59

That must be it Bloodin

I assume it's assortment during meiosis, but who could tell.

SCR0071 · 18/11/2021 21:59

Computer simulation- for HIV-1 a hexameric bundle of six Gags was generated following the electron microscopy(EM) dir reconstruction

Flingingmelon · 18/11/2021 22:05

Would any lovely person like to give an ignorant layperson the first clue about what the argument is here? Because I think I'd enjoy it more if I could understand any of it.

I'm good with the single cell organisms though - even a simpleton like me understands that they are living things.

dyslek · 18/11/2021 22:07

I hear you @SCR0071. Ignore these naysayers, your too good for them.

Its you and me from here on in, right? We at least get it.

borntobequiet · 18/11/2021 22:09

Dead, dead, and never called me “mother”

Birthing parent, surely?

Six whats?

I would if I could. SCR0071 seems to be random phrase generator using words from a biology book.
