Prof Robert Winston has just stated very clearly that it is not possible to change sex.

In relation to freedom of speech and Kathleen Stock.

Anne McElvoy speaking sense.

Viviennemary I don't think you'll find a single poster here disagreeing with that. The point is we need to have a proper, grown-up conversation about the extent of those rights where they clash with the existing, established rights of women to single sex spaces.

Rummikub · 14/10/2021 23:35

@ElizabethTudor

Prof Winston practically has his head in his hands.
I don’t know how he can be so patient and just listen to this
StandWithYou · 14/10/2021 23:36

I thought that Fiona Bruce did quite well when quoting what Kathleen Stock had actually said and that people disagreed with her stating biological facts.

WinterTrees · 14/10/2021 23:38

Fiona Bruce off to dive into a bucket of gin now, before watching back on iplayer to see if she said anything the witch-hunters can come after her for.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 14/10/2021 23:39

There is always something.

Rummikub · 14/10/2021 23:39

Yes and she is repeated more than once. I’m wish she’d let Professor Winston speak more.
HastySlander · 14/10/2021 23:40

Hats off Professor Winston 👏🏼 also an excellent example of why Labour are going to get trounced in the next election…

IsabelleSE19 · 14/10/2021 23:42

He knocked it out of the park! Only switched on by chance and was gripped. The fact the debate was even had on QT is surely a sign...

JazzyBBG · 14/10/2021 23:42

Gutted I missed it. I hope he has credibility with other audiences and makes them think and doesn't start getting trolled by idiots.

ElizabethTudor · 14/10/2021 23:43

I do wish Prof Winston had been allowed to come back in and speak some more. But maybe he didn’t want to.

justbackfrombangkok · 14/10/2021 23:44

That girl in the audience sounded as if she isn't university material.
Robert Winston looked as if he was losing the will to live.
Labour woman clearly hadn't read anything that Kathleen Stock has written and had no clue.
They always leave this topic till the end so that they run out of time.

Franca123 · 14/10/2021 23:45

I can't wait to watch this tomorrow. I've always loved Winston.

HotPenguin · 14/10/2021 23:45

It was a shame that noone seemed to know what Kathleen Stock had actually said that had caused offence. If I hadn't known the background I'd have assumed it must be something really awful to make all those students feel "unsafe". The last lady on the panel did a great job in unpicking the "unsafe" argument.

LigandBrigand · 14/10/2021 23:45

The arguments for dismantling women’s single sex rights are still about weighing rare and niche feelings/beliefs against actual facts.

Just bonkers.

ElizabethTudor · 14/10/2021 23:46

@justbackfrombangkok totally agree that Alison Labour clearly had no bloody idea what KS had said. Hence that terrible waffly BS answer. Just awful.

MingeofDeath · 14/10/2021 23:47

That woman from Labour could not have looked more uncomfortable if she tried. It was written all over her face. Then there was that twattish student wanging on about making people safe. Fuck me.

justbackfrombangkok · 14/10/2021 23:48

I have always been ok with the fact that I was not clever enough to go to university. But I look at some of these students and wonder what they are studying and what the entry requirements were.

LigandBrigand · 14/10/2021 23:50

Barracker’s pronouns argument is in clear effect - the speakers I saw (Fiona Bruce, blue top woman, the adviser guy and even the editor) were absolutely hamstrung by woke language enforcement and trying not to say what they know to be true about sex. It becomes incomprehensible

catzwhiskas · 14/10/2021 23:50

Labour woman declared TWAW and TMAM. And then stated that gender identity was protected in law. Another lie. But at last it’s all coming out, and what with the Nolan podcast the week is improving. Dinosaur as a response to questionnaires asking Male Female or other is catching on where I live too!

WinterTrees · 14/10/2021 23:52

The fact the debate was even had on QT is surely a sign...

I thought the same. I'm pretty sure the last time I saw it vaguely poked at on QT there was one solitary panel member who expressed a tentative GC view and was followed by all the others falling over themselves to cite suicide stats and the 'most marginalised' mantra. (In fact - it's coming back to me now - Paris Lees was on the panel?)

This felt much more balanced and it was really heartening to have Anne McElvoy stating so clearly that the conversation needs to be had, regardless of people feeling 'unsafe' about having their views challenged. It does feel like the long night is over and the sunlight is just getting brighter.

Rummikub · 14/10/2021 23:54

It was marvellous but too brief.

He was very clear and firm.

PamDenick · 14/10/2021 23:56

Will watch tomorrow

musicalfrog · 14/10/2021 23:58

Was that the same labour woman who came unstuck on Women's Hour the other week?

She's pretty useless but then she's arguing a case which is basically unarguable. I don't know how she can carry on attempting to do this in all honesty.

Agree university is not for everyone so if you want everyone to agree with you best to just stay home.

Justgivemewine · 15/10/2021 00:01

@Rummikub

I held my breath when he started saying you should be more interested in my opinion as a biologist.
Me too, and he said exactly what I hoped he would.

My new hero.

AnnieSnap · 15/10/2021 00:06

I cheered out loud! Interesting to see non-biologists arguing with his scientific statements. Also, I’m so tired of hearing ‘but trans people have to be respected/feel safe’. No one aside from genuine bigots is saying otherwise of course. We can respect people for their gender (social construct) choice and still acknowledge the science. I would respect any transwomen for choosing to live as a trans woman, but that doesn’t make them the same as me and it doesn’t make it fair for the transwoman to compete against biological women in sport.
