Starker: Not only women have a cervix

This has made me cross.

Labour conference: Not right to say only women have a cervix, says Starmer www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-58698406

I'm about to go for my smear test. Any man who feels like a woman is welcome to have a speculum inserted into his non-existent cervix - as long as it isn't at the expense of appointments for biological women.

Will I guess I'm a conservative voter from now on!

ozzyteabiscuit · 26/09/2021 21:34

A trans man is a male who was born female so may have a vagina and a cervix and therefore still need a cervical exam.

ozzyteabiscuit · 26/09/2021 21:39

They're not suggesting transgender women who don't have a cervix go and have a smear test. That would be ridiculous. You seem to have misunderstood. They suggest merely saying 'individuals with a cervix' so as not to alienate transgender men who also have a cervix and therefore need to have cervical exams for their own safety. They're not taking away appointments from women just suggesting a change in the language used to be inclusive.

Males cannot become female. You cannot have a "male who was born female". You cannot change your chromosomes from XY to XX.
Kittii · 26/09/2021 21:44

Do you not think that calling women "individuals with a cervix" alienates women (over 50% of the population)?

Franca123 · 26/09/2021 21:45

Yep. Tory all the way. Never thought I'd say that. Wtaf is happening.

A transman who needs a smear test is an adult human female.

There is a word for adult human female that begins with the letter 'w'.

I'm not remotely alienated by the term 'individuals with a cervix' because I am an individual with a cervix. It's inclusive.

Nope. A transman is a woman who identifies as a man. Still & always female.
Kittii · 26/09/2021 21:48

@ozzyteabiscuit you don't speak for all women. Most of us don't like being reduced to our body parts. We are women not "cervix havers".

EdgeOfACoin · 26/09/2021 21:49

I'm not remotely alienated by the term 'individuals with a cervix' because I am an individual with a cervix.

That's because you are a woman Smile

ozzyteabiscuit · 26/09/2021 21:49

Why are people so threatened by inclusivity. It does not affect you at all. It could make a huge difference to the lives of transgender individuals though.

Your opinion of the term trans man doesn't change what it means.

Trans man is an individual with XX chromosomes who identifies as male. That's a fact, just because you don't agree with the term doesn't change the context of the article. Just offering some wisdom so there is no confusion regarding appointments being given to individuals who don't have a cervix because that isn't what is happening.

MidsomerMurmurs · 26/09/2021 21:52

How do you "identify" as male? Or as "female" Do you know what those words mean?

Kittii · 26/09/2021 21:53

No. Males do not have XX chromosomes. This is even in my Y7's science textbook.

ozzyteabiscuit · 26/09/2021 21:55

Just because you don't experience something doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Why does it matter that you don't understand how somebody feels something. Just accept that they feel it, especially when it doesn't affect you any any way.

HotPenguin · 26/09/2021 21:56

"birthing people" is even worse than "individuals with a cervix"

ozzyteabiscuit · 26/09/2021 21:56

Sex and gender are not the same thing.

I'd like to know this too.

If a transman goes through IVF and gets pregnant, is that 'identifying as male'? Like Freddy McConnell?

EdgeOfACoin · 26/09/2021 21:59

Are women in Afghanistan oppressed on the basis of their sex or their gender?

yourhairiswinterfire · 26/09/2021 21:59

They suggest merely saying 'individuals with a cervix' so as not to alienate transgender men who also have a cervix and therefore need to have cervical exams for their own safety.

Remind me who it was that relentlessly threatened JKR with rape and death for saying ''there used to be a name for these people'' in response to the phrase ''people who menstruate''?

It certainly wasn't transmen. Remember all the ''transwomen are women'' declarations that came afterwards by progressives like Daniel Radcliffe, who forgot to even mention transmen despite the phrase ''people who menstruate'' being for their benefit?

Yeah, that tells me that this dehumanising language isn't for the benefit of transmen...

Kittii · 26/09/2021 21:59

Also if you think that trans rights don't affect women you clearly don't understand the issues at all and should really educate yourself.

What about the vulnerable women being forced to share previously female-only protected spaces in prisons, hospitals, rape crisis centres, women's refuges with men, some of which are male sex offenders and go on to sexually abuse and attack these women? Are you happy for male sexual predators (not transwomen but men pretending to be transwomen for nefarious reasons) to be able to walk into women and girls' changing rooms unchallenged? Do you not care about safeguarding women and girls from predatory men?

Did you know that in Canadian prisons where they are letting any male offender who "identifies" as a woman move to the female prisons they are installing condom machines and setting up rape crisis centres in preparation for the inevitable sexual assaults that will occur?

Don't you care about women and girls?

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 26/09/2021 22:00

Why can it not be “women and trans men”? That would be inclusive enough. Though it would require the Labour Party to know what a woman is.

Gncq · 26/09/2021 22:01

@ozzyteabiscuit

A trans man is a male who was born female so may have a vagina and a cervix and therefore still need a cervical exam.
Well exactly. A transman is literally a woman who identifies as a man so the comment "only women have cervix" is trans inclusive and applies to all women including women who identify as a man.
Kittii · 26/09/2021 22:02

@ozzyteabiscuit are you saying that male and female are referring to gender rather than sex then when you say that a male can become a female?

yourhairiswinterfire · 26/09/2021 22:02

Just accept that they feel it

Why is it us that has to accept it? Why can't they accept that we feel degraded and dehumanised by terms like ''bodies with vaginas''?

Sick of the double standards.
