The split was imposed from above, against many objections and some loud screaming (after all the whole basis of feminism is that women are oppressed due to our sex and by the imposition of gender roles).

I have my suspicions as to why. And sometimes sensible threads from places like AIBU are booted over here, to benefit from the obscurity of the naughty corner and the heavier moderation.

HeddaAga · 29/08/2021 08:20

Stopping by to say congratulations Detroit, so pleased for you!

DetroitNeedsADog · 29/08/2021 17:40

Hey heddaAga! Thank you! I'm still waiting for things to go wrong... Terrified about moving or the apartment being taken away from me.

Heavy stuff regarding the naughty corner that is now feminism....I can't say anything that isn't Angry so will just sit on my hands and fume!

MrsOvertonsWindow · 29/08/2021 18:41

How good to see Detroit here - and congratulations on your move tomorrow. What good news that is. Flowers
And a Thigh as well! Altho like Rufus I was often quite bamboozled by their varied contributions.
Settles in for the evening with a glass of Wine and hands round the bottle.

DetroitNeedsADog · 29/08/2021 19:03

I'll only feel safe once the keys are in my hand and my door locked! I'm freaking out.

Gluten free magic brownies anyone?

theThreeofWeevils · 29/08/2021 19:29

Need a stiff drink. Just had a message from the offsprog, apologising for being a twat. My jaw dropped so far I fear it might have dislocated.

DetroitNeedsADog · 29/08/2021 19:46

What do you want to drink, weavils? I'm glad they apologized. You ok?

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 29/08/2021 19:57

Jeez, Weevils, what brought that on?

My excuse is that I'm building up my strength. Term begins on Wednesday. I'll need all the strength I can muster, if the last academic year was anything to go by.

Oh my god that’s awesome

Many congrats 🎉🎊🎉🎊🎉🎉

theThreeofWeevils · 29/08/2021 20:16

I'm grand, thanks, Detroit, just exceedingly surprised. I did leave a slightly snitty voicemail t'other day saying that while I didn't greatly care where or how she was, her grandmother does, so answering the phone some time this month to one of us might be nice...

theThreeofWeevils · 29/08/2021 20:18

Drinks are on me, I think ;- )

DetroitNeedsADog · 29/08/2021 20:22

Stay strong, Weevils! Perhaps you might actually get somewhere now she recognizes what she has done to clearly hurt you. (Puts big bottle of grey goose on the table).

Aparallaxia · 29/08/2021 20:29

theThreeofWeevils Excellent news!

On another note, DH brought me breakfast in bed this morning, as he does every Sunday. He usually makes a nice artistic arrangement of the comestibles. Here is today's effort (that's half a fig at the bottom).

Ah, it's a long story. Clearly I wasn't cut out for this mothering malarkey... She does have MH issues, but also has lurched from crisis to crisis for the past two decades and more. I was seriously pissed off that my aged and unwell mother was upset and worrying. Apparently they spoke today.

My heart does sink that it is a new bloke that has been the distraction but hey. She's 37.

DetroitNeedsADog · 29/08/2021 22:21

Don't blame yourself weevils. People make their own life choices when they are adults, some people just struggle with stability. I am so sorry she is causing you pain and upsetting your mother. Your mothering is not at fault, darling, it is just a mean old world out there, and life is tough xxx HUGS xx

So sorry weevils

I thought you just had a stroppy teen/20s

Children are much harder work for longer than people make out….I thought I would be less worried about adult children

Aparallaxia · 29/08/2021 23:04

So is it still Tuesday you're moving Detroit?

DetroitNeedsADog · 29/08/2021 23:50

Monday afternoon! I can get my keys at 4.30pm. No one can help me move, and the moving van isn't available to me, but it is only a few blocks. Ill manage,

ErrolTheDragon · 29/08/2021 23:55

I can't imagine anything stopping you at this point!

DetroitNeedsADog · 30/08/2021 00:13

Hah! Yeah, if I have to drag the suitcases up there, and do a few trips I swear I will happily walk. Truly hope nothing goes wrong and they give me the keys! I haven't had a home in so many years.
It's so nice everyone remembers me and is wishing me well!
...Just looking at used sofas. I don't think I can bring myself to get anything preordered until I am safely in there with the keys on my brand new crow keychain.
I keep looking at end tables and thinking "man that would be heavy to carry around!" I really have to get over this, otherwise I will be camping out in there...

FeckTheMagicDragon · 30/08/2021 00:23

When I moved over to the states I got off the plane and went straight to the house we had rented. I never bothered staying in a hotel, just got a cab to Walmart, picked up an inflatable mattress, sheets, pillows, a duvet, then a cab back. And ordered a pizza. It was home, so I wanted to sleep there.

DetroitNeedsADog · 30/08/2021 00:26

Yes, Feck! I got a blow up mattress, a pump and I have a few blankets. The rest can wait! Nice pizza? I cant ever get along with comforters or duvets, though!

theThreeofWeevils · 30/08/2021 01:11

All good luck attend you, Detroit. FlowersFlowers for your settling in.

theThreeofWeevils · 30/08/2021 01:19

...and thank you for your kindness , I meant to say. One always feels one could have done better, I understand, even parents with nothing to reproach themselves with. I am not among their number.

More flowers needed Flowers and Cake for sustenance. Tiring business, moving. xxx

Aparallaxia · 30/08/2021 02:10

When DH and I moved (back) to the States we stayed in a rented flat while looking for somewhere to buy. Although the flat was sort-of furnished, we hadn't even a teaspoon to call our name, as all our household possessions were in a container on the high seas, so we had to make numerous trips to Ikea in the Valley to buy everything from teaspoons to towels to tea-towels because we forgot them the first time to a teapot to tongs to trivets to an electric toothbrush; + sheets, duvet, pillows.

Plus a TV, VCR (this was 20 years ago), DVD player.

Oh, and a car. We kept Titania until last month, she was a much loved companion and I miss her very much. We're terrified of our new car (Carla) because she has so many high-tech things we don't know how to use, and I miss the cassette deck in Titania. And before anyone gets on my case for having female names only: (a) my first car was male but I am far too embarrassed to reveal his name; (b) Carla in the Smiley novels is a man and we wanted something dark and mysterious as she looks so glamorous; and (c) Carla self-identifies as female, but still has all her working parts.
