Some really wanky things going Glinners way on twitter again. Just giving a heads up in case anyone has the energy to present another side of the argument.

Trying to break father Jack out of the priests care home & getting the wrong one. Ah Ted, can we keep him? Was it a stage 12 when they get furry?

PandorasMailbox · 21/07/2021 00:06

Another Father Ted fan here.

Glad to see that the scrote who posted on Twitter about Glinner is getting his backside handed to him.

I've always loved Count Arthur Strong on the radio but the TV show, under Glinner's guidance, was different but marvellous. Very poignant too

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 21/07/2021 00:16

@567fedup

Small, far away - an explanation we've often needed.
That sketch was used to great effect when Jameela Jamil tweeted some comic photographs of athletes, under the impression that they were illustrations of genuine size disparities on the pitch. Grin

My favourite episode is the one where it transpires that Mrs Doyle stays awake all night every night just in case Father Ted wakes up and wants a cup of tea, even though he's never done that in all the years she's been standing there just in case. It's tragic and comic at the same time.

Waitwhat23 · 21/07/2021 00:27

@PurgatoryOfPotholes good grief. That's an embarrassingly childish piece of writing in that Tweet.

TheMarzipanDildo · 21/07/2021 01:05

PurgatoryOfPotholes

Oh ffs that’s brilliant Grin HOW!?

Furries · 21/07/2021 01:47

I’m really embarrassed to admit I’ve never seen Father Ted - I was working stupid hours in the City at that time of my life and I’ve just never caught up with it since. I need to find time to rectify thst.

The line that’s always stuck in my head from the IT Crowd is the “I’m sorry for your loss” one. It’s so hilariously inappropriate, and kind of sums up the type of gaffe I’d make when feeling nervous whilst wanting to do the right thing.

NiceGerbil · 21/07/2021 01:59

Watch it immediately. It's just impossibly good.

ItsNotNormalLove · 21/07/2021 02:44

I'm so pleased to see Graham was at the Glasgow meet today, a real legend. Lines often used in this house, both from The IT Crowd:
I feel trapped...like a moth in a bath!
Have you tried turning it off and on again?
My favourite Father Ted line ever is from Mrs Doyle: "Are you sure Father, there's cocaine in it! Oh no, not cocaine, what am I on about? Raisins!" Her delivery is so perfect, it makes me cry laughing every time Grin
And more recently, we've really enjoyed Motherland, exceptional casting and just so funny.
Thanks for the decades of laughter, and for supporting women Graham!

Furries · 21/07/2021 02:48

@NiceGerbil - will definitely add it to my list!

Furries · 21/07/2021 02:52

Had a look at the tweets. So slamming someone for perceived appearance is a great argument/defence/whatever you want to call it.

Mind you, doesn’t help that some responses in defence also slam what people might look like. Not a good look from my point of view. This is what worries me about this issue - there are so many people on SM, a lot of posts are going to come from people who just want to offend, rather than trying to get across the real issues and need for discussion.

NiceGerbil · 21/07/2021 02:56

Are you referring to when obvious male people are said to look obviously male?

I'm not on Twitter I imagine all sorts are said though!

Furries · 21/07/2021 03:24

I don’t think that was specifically inferred, but there were definitely references to their looks not being great. Which really doesn’t help the argument from this side of the fence. It’s got bugger all to do with “looks”, the majority of people aren’t supermodels.

I don’t have a twitter account either,, but you can still view tweets. I’ve found it handy to keep up with some of the links people post here, plus I haven’t engaged with them so not been blocked.

NiceGerbil · 21/07/2021 03:34

What sort of comments?

Sorry just trying to be clear.

The feminist point that the constant judgement of female people on their looks is crappy

Has been turned around so that when women say erm when it's eg a male presenting as a male but with an ID of woman. The response is it's misogyny to judge women based on their looks.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 21/07/2021 05:18

The nonsense on twitter reminds me of this anti-women's suffrage poster.

People always resort to mocking women's appearance.

Just coming on to say here that I love Glinner and he is a total genius. He has written my favourite sitcoms that actually bear rewatching multiple times and are still funny, a rare feat for a sitcom, and that are my go-to happy place when I'm feeling down. All my family feel the same.

Also a brilliant writer of female characters - I love Jen in the IT Crowd - which is a rare feat for a man to manage.

And a brave and passionate defender of women's rights and LGB rights, at great personal expense, for which I am incredibly grateful.

Thank you, Glinner Flowers

It is disappointing if people have sunk to TRAs' level. The best thing to do is ignore the sad fuckers and let them show themselves up.

Anyway, the Bishop Brennan episode of Father Ted is one of the funniest episodes of TV ever made.

JoodyBlue · 21/07/2021 10:34

I love Glinner's comedies. Most often quoted in our house is from an episode where Jen is talking to Roy and says "I don't want you to put me on a pedal stool or anything" and he says "Jen, what did you say?" and she says "don't me put on an a pedal stool. You know -- a pedal stool". "Ah" says Roy, "a pedestal". Grin

I dislike the woman for her behaviour on Twitter but on a thread criticising TRAs for insulting Glinner's appearance...is this really the best line to take??

TheSlayer · 21/07/2021 10:42

If I ever do get to a feminist rally these are the signs I'll be carrying.

This thread has reminded me that I've never seen Black Books. I shall begin to remedy that this evening.

Thanks for all of it, Glinner!
