Starmer and the Labour Party Really Cannot Read the Room

Labour and Self-id

twitter.com/PinkNews/status/1402586773499244549

Rosie Duffield gets the predictable kicking in the comments. Still no public support for her. That's what the Labour leadership think about women's rights and women who have an opinion.

Why any women would vote Labour I really do not know.

Acceptance without exception.

But yes, therein lies the problem, how can anyone tell a transwomen from a pretend transwomen.

These tricky decisions will be outsourced to Stonewall (for a fee).

bellinisurge · 09/06/2021 22:12

Well he, Karen White, that is, managed to convince enough decision makers that he was transgender. And that was because he said he was. So I don't care whether he is transgender or not. His word was enough.

Whatthechicken · 09/06/2021 22:13

@Tanith I think you’re right to question when it was filmed, the dubious timing, and the fact that it is not on KS feed. But it certainly does take the focus off BC nicely doesn’t it?

bellinisurge · 09/06/2021 22:14

Please god we get a proper result tomorrow in Maya's case.

PronounssheRa · 09/06/2021 22:21

@Manderleyagain

How does this differ from the last manifesto? Am I right in thinking it said both that they were committed to single sex spaces as per the EA, and also that they would reform the gra?
Much of that depends on what they mean by single sex, do they mean biological or biological plus anyone with GRC.

For me, I don't see the point of reforming the GRA to make it easier to get a GRC, but then tightening up single sex spaces. Now same sex marriage is legal, what would be the point of a GRC?

ZuttZeVootEeeVro · 09/06/2021 22:25

So I don't think anyone should be withholding votes or resigning from anywhere on this issue alone.

It's not a single issue that has little impact on every day life. It will impact on millions of womens daily lives, from personal care to changing rooms, and to equal pay disputes.

It also demonstrates how important these issues are to the political class.

I agree that it's not just labour, but starmer is the one standing in a field promising to give men female id on their request, so he is the one I'm criticising now. If it was Johnson or whoever it is in charge of the LDs I'd be criticising them too.

The idea that women shouldn't prioritise themselves and vote for a party that is actively seeking to harm us, with the promise that it won't be as bad as it seems, is insulting.

JuneFromBethesda · 09/06/2021 22:26

I can’t quite believe this has happened. I’m now politically homeless. I was a lifelong Lib Dem voter until last year, gave up my party membership over this issue, but had genuine hope when Starmer was elected Labour leader, and was prepared to vote Labour at the next election.

So now who do I vote for? I absolutely cannot vote Conservative.

How can Starmer throw women under the bus like this?

JuneFromBethesda · 09/06/2021 22:29

I’ve been an interested political observer, if not activist, all my life. I have a degree in Politics (not that I’m claiming any great knowledge as a result!). Now between our repellent, mendacious, corrupt government and the gender madness sweeping the opposition, I feel like turning away from politics altogether.

bellinisurge · 09/06/2021 22:30

If he's all about what looks progressive, wait till he hears about what Stonewall have tried to do to Allison Bailey.

bellinisurge · 09/06/2021 22:34

I don't care what stronger single sex exemptions he comes out with, the "I just wanna pee" crowd will have carte blanche. To pee. Or wank. Or film. Or assault.

FOJN · 09/06/2021 22:36

I absolutely cannot vote Conservative.

I understand how you feel. I will vote conservative next time in the hope that an even bigger Tory majority might make Labour take notice and do some self reflection, although Labour are so far gone I'm not convinced even that will work but all other attempts to make our case have been ignored.

Shimmyshimmycocobop · 09/06/2021 22:40

@Letsgetreadytocrumble

Starmer is going to have to pick a side on this soon, he can't keep fence sitting because he will end up losing support from everyone.
He's picked a side, he couldn't have been clearer, and to use Prick News of all the platforms tells you everything you need to know. Angry
Mollyollydolly · 09/06/2021 22:46

They'll get destroyed at the next election now.
Tories want to win, that's what they care about. They can read a room. I can see it now.
''Keir what is a woman?'
'Keir can men who rape women be placed in the female estate?'
They'll get destroyed, and they'll deserve it.
Disappointed I voted for him in the leadership election because he seems slightly more sane than any of the women on this issue.

N4ish · 09/06/2021 22:46

Do we know what Andy Burnham’s take on this issue is? He looks likely to be Labour’s next leader.

Starmer has been such a disappointment all round. I voted for him in the leadership election partly because he was the only candidate not to sign that foolish ‘trans rights’ pledge but feel like I shouldn’t have bothered.

Tanith · 09/06/2021 22:53

“ I agree that it's not just labour, but starmer is the one standing in a field promising to give men female id on their request, so he is the one I'm criticising now. If it was Johnson or whoever it is in charge of the LDs I'd be criticising them too.”

Oh, I’m not saying you shouldn’t criticise - quite the opposite! I think we should shout from the rooftops! And, while we’re about it, yes.we should find out where Boris Johnson and his Government stands on this.

What I am saying is that it’s all of them.
So what do we do about it? If we just stop voting and resign our party memberships, what’s that really going to achieve?

DeRigueurMortis · 09/06/2021 22:53

Predictably.....

Here you go....

Tanith · 09/06/2021 22:55

@Whatthechicken I think that’s exactly why Benjamin Cohen has released it today.

DeRigueurMortis · 09/06/2021 22:56

Basically if Keir's been a disappointment then Andy is a fully paid up kool aid drinking adversary.

N4ish · 09/06/2021 23:02

Thanks @DeRigueurMortis, hadn’t seen that - doesn’t bode well.

Mollyollydolly · 09/06/2021 23:03

And does he really not know that Pink News are toxic to a lot of lesbians, gay men and women generally, the way they've treated JK Rowling for goodness sake. I'm emailing him (again) I do wonder if emails get through to him.

Mollyollydolly · 09/06/2021 23:05

Burnham met LGB Alliance and then backtracked because of the criticism. www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/andy-burnham-trans-community-support-17743380

thecatfromjapan · 09/06/2021 23:08

Honestly, I cannot stress this enough: now, now, now is the moment to join Labour.

Starmer is probably the least TWAW Leader we are likely to get.

I really do worry about the next Leader.

littlebillie · 09/06/2021 23:14

This is a dark day for all politics, once a major party swings one way they all will follow.

irresistibleoverwhelm · 09/06/2021 23:14

cat but if they are all TWAW I don’t want them to win anyway. ☹️ And the membership fees are bloody expensive. Just funnelling money each month for Bromentum spad types to come out with this stuff. I can’t do it any more with Labour, it’s like eternally living with a lazy man who won’t ever change, but you keep hoping he will even as you wash another set of dishes.

DeRigueurMortis · 09/06/2021 23:17

And I repeat again NO.

I'm damn well not paying subs and putting myself in the firing line AGAIN in CLP meetings full of lefty misogynistic men, plus my time and effort for a party that has no respect for me as a woman.

You're request is akin to asking me as a remainer to have joined the Brexit party.

I'm not propping them up any more.

They need to reach rock bottom before they rehabilitate themselves as an effective opposition.
