Labour and Self-id

Rosie Duffield gets the predictable kicking in the comments. Still no public support for her. That's what the Labour leadership think about women's rights and women who have an opinion.

Why any women would vote Labour I really do not know.

Keir has definitely picked a side
"Trans people are some of the most discriminated against in society"...

Merftastic · 09/06/2021 18:24

I am the archetypal labour voter, I haven't even considered voting for someone other than labour.

I've just emailed to cancel my membership, clearly labour do not represent my best interests anymore.

Who do I vote for now?

Xoxoxoxoxoxox · 09/06/2021 18:29

I actually feel afraid of what would happen if they get in.
I never thought I'd feel like that.

GNCQ · 09/06/2021 18:35

Holy crap.

I listened to that video of SK standing in fields of green with a blue sky thinking yeah fair enough fair enough nodding along to it all THEN he says

"We are committed to updating the GRA to introduce self ID for trans people"
Shock
He has learned nothing!

WarriorN · 09/06/2021 18:38

He's going to get a huge shock if he does get into power and actually has to look at how to get what he's described working.

But it's not going to happen 🤷🏻‍♀️

WarriorN · 09/06/2021 18:43

It's worth signing up to the webinars The baroness is running.

The evidence being discussed eg nhs wards and data is shocking re safeguarding.

One glance and KS will realise what a pile of shite he's just spouted.

WarriorN · 09/06/2021 18:44

@ofwarren

That reminds me; evidence please?

How? In what way?

Whatthechicken · 09/06/2021 18:45

I’m out. I tried to give back my membership a few days ago, but they still haven’t cancelled it. So I’ve just sent another message, I’m guessing they’ll have hundreds to do now though. I can’t trust Labour to safeguard my daughters sex based rights. PPs are correct KS is such a disappointment.

PigeonPants · 09/06/2021 18:53

Who is advising KS? The same people who told Miliband to stare wild-eyed into the camera and say "vote for me to be your next PM!" because that worked for Obama in 2008.

Looks like Labour don't think they need the women's vote to win... True, but more generally - they don't seem to understand the correlation between being voted for by voters and winning an election.

Starmer is going to have to pick a side on this soon. He has; he just doesn't have the guts or the passion to be consistently honest and clear about it.

Chrysanthemum5 · 09/06/2021 18:54

I'd say he's picked a side and it's not women. I guess our hard won rights and ongoing fights for equality and freedom from violence just aren't interesting enough for him.

Anyway good to know there really is no point bothering with labour now. Even if they row back on this it's too little too late. I'm done with them

JessicaPeach · 09/06/2021 18:59

I've just emailed to cancel my membership too, having previously been very active in my CLP. So disappointed.

irresistibleoverwhelm · 09/06/2021 18:59

@Orf1abc

In this respect (though not in many others) he is reading the room.

That room is far bigger than your echo chamber.

The “don’t want to get elected” room, you mean?

Because in the U.K., I don’t know if you’ve noticed, the majority of voters aren’t voting for the stuff he’s espousing.

But sure, if you think you’re on the right side of history, just aim to go down in ignominy as an unelected party with an unelectable leader in the meantime, that’s just the way to get into those history books.

Golden2021 · 09/06/2021 18:59

What an absolute fucking dick. I honestly thought he would come right in the end. It's like having two lib dem parties. Arseholes.

Who do I vote for now?

You sound like me 3 years ago when I left the party.

Answer in my case was a number of spoilt ballot papers then a fuck it moment when yes, I did the unthinkable and voted Tory after Brexit was a done deal.

It is a hill I'm willing to die on.

A LP in government isn't going to tick my boxes right now of protecting actual vulnerable women when they don't know what a woman is.

My grandfather, god bless his soul was a LP member of 60 years standing when he died and a Labour councillor for 20 years.

I was worried he might haunt me, until I reasoned that my grandmother (a staunch welsh feminist) would have told him to get back in his box grave Grin.

And no, not sorry for the gallows humour - seems appropriate when it feels like we are watching the end of a political party I invested so much time/energy in supporting.

KS is frankly a wuss....and I don't buy that he's between a rock and a hard place.

Blair (love or hate him) as leader made a stand about the party he wanted to lead and to bring it to the centre left. His challenge against the militant left was no more difficult to the one KS is facing now - the difference is he didn't spend time getting splinters in his arse.

Why isn't he storming the polls, then?
catgirl1976 · 09/06/2021 19:02

I've never voted Tory. Life long labour supporter, left wing, liberal. I refused to speak to DH for months because he voted for David Cameron once. Hate the tories. Would never, ever vote for them I couldn't even imagine it.

Until I watched Kier today.

And now I think, as much as I hate them given how wrong Labour have got this and how right Liz Truss has got it maybe I could vote for them. I more than likely won't because I detest their other policies but I've never even given it headspace before and Kier has managed to make me think about it.

thecatfromjapan · 09/06/2021 19:06

I'm willing to bet he means self-I'd - with important limitations in line with existing laws on protected characteristics, etc.

I think that verbal declaration isn't saying very much more than the current Labour position.

But he needs to a. Be honest b. Tell people it is not OK to bully Rosie Duffield on Twitter.

CaveMum · 09/06/2021 19:07

That’s another General Election handed to the Tories then. Might as well have wrapped it in sparkly paper and tied a big old rainbow bow to it.

Why any women would vote Labour I really do not know.

How many people decide they won't vote anymore because of their stance on women, yet won't get their arse into gear, join the party and vote internally for the party line?

Take the Green Party, from what I've heard in their spring conference they had a motion for twaw (or not). 500 people voted out of 25000 members. The vote was for twaw by 80 votes. This could have been stopped if women put their money (£3 per month) to join the party to vote against this.

Same with the Labour Party. Honestly. Sitting on a high horse saying you could never vote for them anymore is frankly apathetic. Join, vote, turn internal policies around. Join every damn Party to do the same if you really care about women's rights.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 09/06/2021 19:09

Sad but not surprised. I don’t think KS believes TWAW for a moment btw but yes bern told that it’s a position that will differentiate Labour from the Tories and indeed it does, on the wrong side of reality

My worry as a lifelong Labour Party voter who now will not vote for them is that so many women will just not vote at all.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 09/06/2021 19:11

I hear you MidCirgs but honestly the level of hate thrown at women in the Green Party and in Labour, why on earth would I sign up to be abused by blue haired middle class ‘queer’ 20 somethings?

bellinisurge · 09/06/2021 19:11

This is a gift to the tabloids. Enough Karen White stories in the headlines and Labour is sunk.

MidClrgs · 09/06/2021 19:14

Do you maybe not understand that you hat I've suggested is what Rosie Duffield is doing? All well and good writing here on Mumnsnet, sending her flowers and supporting her on Twitter - but when it comes to internal votes on women's rights lefties abandoning the Party are leaving her high and dry.
Meanwhile, in conferences where motions are being voted on which affect women, the TRAs organise themselves more effectively and win the war against women.

Rant over.
