Trans lesbian?

Timeforatincture · 26/04/2021 18:39

My first ever post on this board. Long time reader, and have found it highly educational. Thank you everyone.

There is a pullout in today's Guardian about influential lesbians. Cameos and longer pieces. One of the longer pieces is an interview with a "trans lesbian."

AIBUin thinking that's a bit odd?

Honestly, it's 2021. I really, genuinely never thought I would live through a time when same-sex attraction denied.

Trevsadick · 19/06/2021 19:58

@suggestionsplease1 your first paragraph has no correlation to the rest of your post.

You said lesbian spaces could afford to remain open and (something along the lines of) you are glad the spaces you like do allow non lesbians in, because thee attendance keeps it open

So who is it these spaces expanded to Include? Only other biological women?

I haven't put words in your mouth. You have said things that show, you are either ignoring huge women's issues, or are not well connected.

YOU only see these issues on line. You may be unaware but colleges are open. Not everyone is sat at home behind a keyboard.

They are out having interactions with people.

And your experience is not everyone else's.

And pretending the issues don't exist because you don't recognise them, isn't helping anyone.

Datun · 19/06/2021 19:58

So straight women would find themselves attracted to a trans woman? Who for all intents and purposely, aside from biologically, is a woman?

For the love of God. Please describe how a person can be a woman, if it's not biological.

WhiteFeministWarMachine · 19/06/2021 20:00

I'm astonished at the homophobia on this thread.

The word lesbian denotes a distinct group of women. Not transwomen, not non-men - women.

The word is taken.

Clarice99 · 19/06/2021 20:01

And just what are those 'intents and purposes' @sunavendi and why deny biology?

sunavendi · 19/06/2021 20:02

@Clarice99

Seriously? All the prejudice on this thread and you call me out? Transphobic is not a slur nor is it a name. It's a fact. If you're offended by it then maybe you should ask yourself why.

I believe in fact - biological sex. I don't buy into ideologies.

Ironic that you should call 'transphobia' when homophobia is rife on this thread. Maybe you ought to ask yourself why.

But this isn't just about biological sex, can you not see that?

I posted that after seeing a gross display of transphobia, why are you so offended by me calling that out? I do not condone homophobia, I myself am not a straight woman.

Who for all intents and purposely, aside from biologically, What does that mean???

Shedbuilder · 19/06/2021 20:03

@suggestionsplease1

Lol 'the erasure of genuinely lesbian only spaces is a harm in itself' - it's not trans issues that have caused that, the spaces that have been attempted for lesbians only have not been economically successful because they're not populated enough by their targeted market. And if they do get some numbers they still don't get the spending. They don't generate enough money to be sustainable.

I suppose there are transwomen holding us back at the doors?!

Thank god that there are a huge range of diversely identifying individuals going to these places - it's what keeps them open so that me and my lesbian friends can enjoy them

You're making the mistake of thinking that the only lesbian-only spaces and events are commercial ones, the things you see advertised in Diva. There's always been a non-commercial grassroots lesbian culture too, much more subversive, dare I say transgressive, than the bars and clubs that you're so grateful for. Those of us who are older will remember a time before the pink pound, when women organised for themselves.

I'm hoping that when we've fought our way through this gender war we'll see a resurgence of grassroots lesbian feminist initiatives that are run by lesbians, for lesbians.

speakout · 19/06/2021 20:05

It absolutely is though.

Clarice99 · 19/06/2021 20:06

No. I cannot.

I would like to know your definition, aside from biology, as you stated earlier. I notice that you've evaded that question.

Educate yourself! Gender and sex are not the same thing. Gender is on a spectrum. Why do you think you know more than thousands of well educated, well regarded scientists, psychologists, sociologists etc. ?

Sexual orientation is all about sex . If you say that lesbians are not same sex attracted then you are a homophobe

When did I ever say that? I didn't.

@sunavendi

As per my earlier post that you ignored, I will ask again:

So straight women would find themselves attracted to a trans woman? Who for all intents and purposely, aside from biologically, is a woman?

And just what are those 'intents and purposes' @sunavendi and why deny biology?

Would a straight woman generally find them self attracted to someone who dresses, looks like, lives like like a stereotypical "woman"?

I have answered it. I can only type so fast.

WhiteFeministWarMachine · 19/06/2021 20:12

Demanding people educate themselves doesn't wash here, sunavendi.

sunavendi · 19/06/2021 20:13

WHY do you care if someone lives their own life as a woman? Why do you care? Why do you care what is between someone's legs or what organs they posses? Or who is attracted to who? It is absolutely none of your business. It's quite frankly, pathetic being so het up about the lifestyles of others. Who have lifestyles that will never affect you.

Of course, as in any group of people, there are those that abuse it and have anterior, and yes sometimes sinister motive, but that percentage is so minute that others should not have to suffer for it.

sunavendi · 19/06/2021 20:14

Why not? It is not the job of others to educate you as adults. I'm not answering questions that people could answer for themselves if they decided to educate themselves.

I wasn't aware that you made the rules of this site and/or thread? It won't "wash"? What does that even mean? I simply do not care what "washes" and does not to you.

Can I just add, not once have I denied biology. Quite the opposite in fact, but people aren't attracted to people because of their genetic makeup. It's because of what they look like and the person they are inside.

Trevsadick · 19/06/2021 20:16

@sunavendi if you read the thread, you would know the issues.

Taking the label of lesbian and trying to make it mean something other than 'same sex attracted' does impact other people. Namely, lesbians.

I am a lesbian for goodness sake. Just not a bigoted one.

Why are you speaking for all lesbians?

334bu · 19/06/2021 20:18

When did I ever say that? I didn't.

So you agree that transwomen cannot be lesbians and that lesbians can only be female people sexually attracted exclusively to other female people.

DialSquare · 19/06/2021 20:19

I'm a straight women and I personally wouldn't be attracted to a man who presents as a stereotypical women. I also wouldn't be attracted to a man who wears sandals with socks and a string vest. Or a man who is a goth or rocker. Or drainpipes and pointy shoes. I'm attracted to men but not all men,
