But don't worry they are arguing for the right to access surrogacy, so they do know what biology is

"Let us say unequivocally that the statements of newly launched organisations that seek to defend biology or fight gender identity and expression do not represent the wider LGBTI+ community nor feminists in Ireland."

"We call on media, and politicians to no longer provide legitimate representation for those that share bigoted beliefs, that are aligned with far right ideologies and seek nothing but harm and division"

"Even now, transgender people continue to work for reforms that will increase the rights of gay and lesbian parents in surrogacy and adoption."

This beggars belief.....

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 21/11/2020 14:21

They have moved so far from their original intention.

Beamur · 21/11/2020 14:23

Didn't Amnesty used to campaign for people who were voiceless? Remember those days.
So it's not enough to disagree, but the people who disagree must be silenced. Not a good look.

GrainneMhaol · 21/11/2020 14:39

National Women's Council of Ireland also supported it.

NWCI’s first action since appointing a transwoman onto their board.

Yet again certain libfems purporting to speak for feminists in Ireland.

Truly disgusting. Awaiting coverage of this in our mainstream media. I guess I’ll be waiting!

This is indefensible.

GCAcademic · 21/11/2020 14:49

Biology is indefensible now? I’d better get on to the vice-chancellor of my university so that he can start closing down the biology department.

Robbabank · 21/11/2020 15:00

This is truly gob-smacking. Such gross arrogance and entitlement!
To actively advocate for the removal of political representation - by a group established explicitly to provide a voice for those who are denied representation and silenced just beggars belief!

Has there been any notice taken of this in the Irish media?
Has there been any comment or push back on this, at all?
Which high-profile feminists and commentators can we push this to? So many of the activist women I respected in the Abortion Information and Repeal campaigns have capitulated to the gender ideology narrative as they all seem to tie women’s rights in wholesale with LBGT rights.

Duckwit · 21/11/2020 15:01

So 'seeking to defend biology' is bad... Except when 2 blokes need a female to incubate a baby for them.

Do these people not step back and read what they have written and think, 'hmmmmm, that doesn't come across well'?

"Let us say unequivocally that the statements of newly launched organisations that seek to defend biology........ do not represent the wider LGBTI+ community nor feminists in Ireland."

You could not make this shit up.

MichelleofzeResistance · 21/11/2020 15:04

I look forward to hearing how many politicians are willing to stand beside this totalitarian removal of civil and legal representation from what will be the massive majority of the electorate. As this should mean their immediate deselection.

Fgs, how extreme does this need to become for people to realise what they are dealing with here?

GrainneMhaol · 21/11/2020 15:17

Apologies I didnt see the earlier thread

Campaigning to remove political representation from women who want to defend biology.

yeah, that's precisely why Amnesty was set up

Years of writing letters on behalf of prisoners of conscience poor GCSE biology students forced to study Human reproduction

No hang on a mo...

Do they not have any conception of just how utterly mad that statement makes them look?

peanut2017 · 21/11/2020 15:31

I got an email from the NWC asking me to support Transgender awareness week 🙈 sent an email back to say how disgusted I was. No surprise I haven't received a response.

The Irish Girl Guides are also supporting this ideology. Also emailed them and don't expect any response.

Such a sad state of affairs

notyourhandmaid · 21/11/2020 16:36

They're ignoring any dissent and pretending that anyone with any concerns is a terrible terrible bigot. Instead of women with actual brains. And boundaries.

GrainneMhaol · 21/11/2020 16:55

Paul Murphy TD and Thomas Pringle TD are supporting that ridiculous letter

I am really struggling today to understand how "defending biology", biology, science has become not only grounds for censure, but grounds for censorship.

As I said on the other thread, I've lived through pretty vicious discussion and debate about divorce, abortion, marriage equality. At no point did I ever hear anyone suggest that those discussions and debates should not take place.

That an organisation whose remit is supposed to be advocacy for human rights can put its name to a letter calling for the suppression not just of human rights but of open discussion is a measure of how far they have fallen. The shame they should feel. The NWCI is no longer worthy of the name. Shame on them also.

InspiralCoalescenceRingdown · 21/11/2020 20:24

I've actually reported this to change.org, for what little it's worth. They won't do anything.

If there are elected members of a government body sharing this I'd suggest that scrutiny of their code of conduct would be a useful port of call.
HecatesCats · 21/11/2020 23:44

Just a cursory glance, but I'd suggest a Dáil Éireann member sharing this would be in breach of this code. How is it in the public interest to suggest women trying to protect women's rights should have their representation removed...

peanut2017 · 22/11/2020 12:48

Has anyone noticed if the media have picked this up at all?

MerchedCymru · 22/11/2020 13:05

This is absolutely shocking. I left Amnesty several years ago due to their insistence that gender was more significant than biology but this statement that women who disagree with them should lose representation is beyond belief. To accept this dictat would put Ireland on par with Saudi Arabia, or Iran.

If anyone knows how we might best support women in Ireland who are fighting for their sex-based rights, please let us know.

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 22/11/2020 14:08

fight gender identity

I’m old enough to remember when gender was pretty uncontrovertially understood to mean sexism, and fighting it was understood by right on types to be a Good Thing

It’s like invasion of the fucking body snatchers
